Hello Everyone! I am starting my Halloween challenge with "The Shining". I may not get to all 13 books but Stephen King is one of my favorite authors so it is only natural I start this challenge off with the King (hehe) of horror. Anyway is anyone else reading this one? If so have you seen the movie? I watched it about 2 years ago now but I fell asleep on it and don't remember a single thing. I decided when in I woke up from my slumber 2 years ago that I would it. Because I always fall asleep on movies but I never fall asleep on a good read :)

Hello! That's great, mix it up a bit! I hope that I'll get to The Shining, even though I get scared just thinking about it... And I haven't seen the film, I prefer to be able to sleep;)
And I tend to fall asleep during movies as well, but I think the mindbogglingly fear would keep me awake for this one...I don't know if you can tell, but I'm not very good with any kinds of scary movies:)

I wasn't very scared by the book but there were elements of it that I thought were really well done! I love the psychology of the characters.
I'd started Frankenstein already when I heard about the challenge so I'll be reading that one first :)

Kristi: I grew up on scary movies (it used to be my favorite genre but I found scary movies to have too much gore and not enough scary these days). The shining was also way too long and didn't capture a lot of the characters essence in my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend the movie (too long), but I am enjoying the hell out of the book. It's so suspenseful I hate to put it down. I agree it isn't very scary and I too like the psychology of the characters, which I believe the movie didn't capture as well. Frankenstein is my next read!

I'm glad you like it, Adrienne! I think I read the book a long time ago, but it's been so long I can hardly remember it. I just remember the suspense was the best part.
I wasn't a fan of the film but it was better than I thought it would be. I remember the first time I saw it, I watched it with my aunt in Colorado. When we were finished she told me to look out the window and I realized we were staying across the street from the hotel it was filmed in! (This was a TV version, not the famous version, and it was filmed in the same hotel Stephen King had written the Shinning in- we toured it the next day and the ghost stories were so much fun to listen to!)
Anyway, I'm hoping I can get to the Shining before Halloween! I'm finishing Dracula now and planning to start the Monk next.

Finished! It was good, but I don't think I'm a Stephen King gal. I'll try a few other books of his maybe The Green Mile, Carrie or The Stand
lol I read my comment from before reading The Shining and after and they don't match. I feel like that covers the essence of the book. Also, The Shining in my opinion is not one of his best. I've read others that freaked me out more like Gerald's Game.
