I struggled over this challenge. Not because I didn't know a book with magic because, let's be honest here, aren't ALL the books I read about a magical universe of some kind? And it's an extremely prevalent concept these days. My problem was that I wanted it to be DIFFERENT. No Harry Potter rewind or cheesy wanna be. No Paolini or Clare or Butcher or Harkness or even Tolkien. I wanted something different.
Enchanted is my second attempt. The first was just too dark and deep. It wasn't fun. And really...magic should be fun in my mind.
(appreciate that link...there are PAGES of both "Enchanted" and "Orson Scott Card"!!)
This book was a surprise and completely enjoyable. It was a type of fractured fairy tale, but more old Russian folklore and fairy tales than anything from the Grimm Brothers or our American fantasies. It was fun. It was deep, It was a little predictable, but still enjoyable. It was one of the surprise reads for me this year! I highly recommend it!
