A friend of mine is a great editor. She tells me that most of her clients are stand-up folks, but she's been "stiffed" by two:

Bayda Newton and Eleazar Noel.

Deal with them at your own risk.

My pleasure. This work is hard enough when we do get paid. No reason to do it for free.

I suggest all editors get 1/2 down and 1/2 on delivery. That way, you at least get something for your efforts.

And share deadbeats when you DO get stiffed.

Good info, Al, and thanks. I've largely been able to avoid this because I have a lawyer whose paralegal handles all my contracts (and this lawyer isn't shy about securing payment if I get stiffed). Thankfully, it's almost never happened in twenty years of doing this.
