Nyssa | 2023 comments Good idea!

So are you currently asking or were you just inspired to start the thread?

message 2: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm game... Someone pick me a book. Must be horror (or at least October appropriate!) and must be from my to-read_owned shelf.

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Sounds good!

message 4: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Oh, is it too late to make a suggestion? I was going to say Pretty Monsters: Stories, but strictly because I like the title and, well, it seems October appropriate.

message 5: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Maybe I'll do both. ;)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) The Night Strangers is a bust. I'm bored and annoyed by the repetition and the 2nd person present narrative for one of the main characters' perspectives.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Becky, I saw you have Boy's Life on your "To Be Read" list. That's one of my favorites you might consider it. It's a sort of non-traditional horror but it is a horror read.

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That's on my "maybe I'll read this oneday" TBR. I'm trying to focus on books that I already own. I haven't really been a fan of the McCammon books that I've read so far though, either. :(

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments McCammon runs hot and cold. I've pretty much hated a couple of his books but others i like. This one turned out to be one I liked, my wife liked (we agreed about half the time) and my brother liked (we NEVER agree). So I'd recommend it if you maybe come across it.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, it was... weird. Did not like. :( Which is a shame because I had hoped that it would be great!

I'll be fitting Nyssa's suggestion in soonish. :)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Reviving thread. I'm not at home right now, but I'll want a help w/ a choice when I go back in a couple of months.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Need a little advice: I'm suffering from wanting to read ALL the things at once - but can't. Here's the situation:

1. I'm thinking of taking a break from Sookie Stackhouse. The next book is Book #7 - All Together Dead

2. I have the BotM The Power on loan from the library, but I don't want to read it yet since we're still a week from March (And I'd like to discuss it at the same time as everyone else). On the other hand, I only have it for seven more days and am not sure if renewing will be permitted since its apparently the only e-copy in this entire county.

3. Jose has lent me Volumes 1 - 5 of the Rat Queens series - Book #1 = Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery

4. I have all of the Saga series - Book #1 = Saga, Vol. 1

5. I also started the Giant Days series - Book #1 = Giant Days, Vol. 1.

HELP!

Ala | 469 comments Start with whichever has to be returned soonest, then work on what you already own.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Rat Queens, so you can tell me how it is.

message 16: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You should just skip the rest of the Sookie books in general. Meh.

Why are you so logical! :D

LOL

I can't do that. I have invested too much time, energy, and money to quit now. :P

Well... if you're still enjoying them, then read on. I wasn't. I enjoyed them for a while, but I wish I'd noped out of that series when Eric started being the main man. Instead I hung on, hoping for it to get better again, and for me it didn't.

message 19: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Did you stop at a later book, or did you read the entire series?

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I stopped halfway through book 10. It got so ridiculous and stupid and I found I literally did not care one bit what happened, and so I just stopped reading and moved on.

message 21: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I have a vague memory of not liking book number nine, but I could not for the life of me tell you why; it was too long ago now. That was also around the time that Harris said this series would be 13 books long, so I decided then to wait until the series was completely written before trying again.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I mean, I bailed on both Sookie and Saga after the first book... so I might not be the best recommender...

message 24: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments If anything were to turn me away from the Sookie series it would be the direction of the story - the plot itself, because I (still) like the characters, and I want to see what happens with them.

As for Saga, I’m in pure curiosity mode right now. I’ve read the first two volumes, and although I’m not emotionally invested in the characters (yet?), I still want to know where the story is going.

Jose suggested Rat Queens because I like Saga, so far, and he likes both collections.

Beth (rosewoodpip) Nicki wrote: "Rat Queens starts off great, but then does a weird retcon and kinda turns to shit after that."

My Rat Queens arc:

v. 1 - holy cats this is the best comic I've read in forever!
v. 2 - [dial tone] - literally can't remember a thing about it
v. 3 - whoa, what happened? this is awful
v. 4 - apparently this is where the retcon starts. haven't read it yet...

I'd say read v. 1 and don't bother with the rest, tbh.
