I really loved the bit where they're selling this book. And wow, that book is so physically big! (I am reading the kindle version.)

The earlier goldrush that we've heard people mention was around central Otago (Dunedin). By this stage it had pettered out and people had mostly moved on to the Hokitika region. Getting there was a problem, for, as you can see by looking at the map, there is a huge mountain range which runs right down the entire length of the South Island and these aren't little foothills. Even during the height of summer they have snow. It sounds like there is some sort of vague track between Christchurch and Hokitika by this point in history (originally there wasn't anything) but it clearly isn't anything as definite as an actual road. This is why people who could afford passage by ship came that way.
