Sera | 2 comments My favorite books are almost always character driven. Even if the plot is interesting or unique if I don't connect with the characters I just don't care what happens and find myself struggling through a book. But when I love the characters, relate to them, feel with them I can get through any plot holes or slow parts and feel the emotions that much more and to book is really memorable and stands apart for me. Some good examples of character driven books I LOVED are The Bronze Horseman (The Bronze Horseman, #1) by Paullina Simons and Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon . Both of these are historical fiction and are long books, but I loved the characters so much I never wanted the books to end. I also loved the characters in The Man I Love by Suanne Laqueur and Bad Romeo (Starcrossed, #1) by Leisa Rayven and Before We Were Strangers by Renee Carlino and felt everything right along with them which had me sobbing through some parts and laughing through others. Or this book The Proposition (The Proposition, #1) by Katie Ashley could have been cheesy and unrealistic but I liked the characters so much I was grinning through the whole thing.
So what are some of your favorite character driven books?

Janice (jamasc) I prefer plot driven stories that have strong character development. I'm currently reading Outlander and I would say that it falls more into this category than a character driven story. There's a strong plot and the story moves forward quite quickly.

Stephen King is the master of character development. Most of his books are plot driven, but with an amazing ability to go deep into a character's mind.

I tend to find character driven books, where there isn't much plot and stays more in the characters' heads to be a bit of a snoozefest. The Elegance of the Hedgehog was one that I would characterize as character driven.

One character driven story that stands out in my mind and got 5 stars from me is The Last Days of Dogtown. I can probably come up with more if I think about it more.

Best Character driven books for me have flawed characters or have some pretty deep issues. I really can't tolerate those characters that are perfect or have a perfect life or perfect anything. I think good examples of this is the Joe Ledger series by Jonathan Maberry and the Will Trent series, by Karin Slaughter. I also enjoy the Outlander series because of Jamie and Claire. They demonstrate loyalty, trust, devotion and strength. Most of my favorite books are character driven.
