Each chapter has its own voice

Bear Giles I have an explanation for something that seems to trip up people. What many people describe as inconsistencies appears (to me) to be different voices for each chapter. Newboy told the Kid that his notebook had at least four hands and I think that's reflected in the novel itself.

The shifts are subtle since the focus also changes (chapter 3 has the Labry towers, chapter 4 has the lost time, etc.) and that introduces its own changes but I think you can see it in things like the choice of language and pacing. I think of it like the differences you would get if you asked a group of close friends to describe a series of events. Each person naturally has a slightly different voice and multiple descriptions of the same events will be phrased slightly differently. Nobody is wrong, nobody is more correct than the others.
