Idmwilliamson | 5 comments You can't go far past Bram Stokers effort for old and I really enjoyed Robert Matterson's I am Legend for the new. Saw the film recently, and was very disappointed at how they had changed the main character and the entire plot; so all I'm saying is, don't be put off by the film

message 2: by Idmwilliamson (new)

Idmwilliamson | 5 comments I think I may have enjoyed the film if I hadn't read the book first. Is always the same with these book film situations, the first medium you experience always clouds judgement for the next medium.

message 3: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) Although I don't really consider I Am Legend a true vampire book it's still worth the read. Necroscope is an awesome vampire novel, better than most IMO, and I'm pretty burnt out on the whole vampire thing. Plus you can never go wrong with Dracula.

message 4: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) It's awesome, and I am sick of vampires, but it's worth the read, and you don't need to read the rest of the books to feel like you've completed the story.

message 5: by Jerrod (new)

Jerrod (liquidazrael) 14 and still counting, but they are broken into segements 1-5 is one story line 6-8 is another, 9 & 10 are another, 11-13 is another, and 14 might be standalone. See Brian Lumley's website for the order, since they are not all titled with what book number they are. Worth the read though. He's one of yours too!

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

If you don't mind romance, The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is really good, the first book is Dark Lover. Other than that Vampire Academy is my favorite.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha they have really awesome fighting scenes and the brothers are hott, but each book has an HEA (happil-ever-after) with detailed "romance scenes". :) I loved all of them though.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha yeah. They are pretty intense, but again I must say I loved all of the books and plan to read more of J.R. Ward's series.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I understand that. Have you read Vampire Academy? That is another really good series.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh well that is my other favorite Vamp series... very good.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I went through the same overload lol

message 12: by Smash (last edited Sep 02, 2009 08:42AM) (new)

Smash (smash_attack) Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of my fav series EVER! Hotness from all angles! Z and V are my fav. characters, but all of their stories are amazing. I CAN NOT WAIT for JM's book - I am dying for he and Xhex to get together!!!

*composes self* I loved Stoker's Dracula. I'm currently reading Let the right one in and it is one EERIE book, but not the traditional vampire story, that is for sure. I love Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, and Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series is entertaining. HUGE fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series too! (I just prefer books in series.)

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, another BDB fan! :) I read the entire series for the first time starting in April I believe straight through until Lover Avenged came out and now I am going through withdrawls. JM's book is going to be amazing and I plan to re-read the series before it comes out.

message 14: by Smash (new)

Smash (smash_attack) I've re-read twice and will probably do so again when the next book is released!

message 15: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 103 comments The Bram Stoker original is my favourite, I also like I Am Legend if that counts. A little disappointed with the "urban fantasy" vampire stuff I have come across so far. I would dearly like to find something vampire orientated in that genre that had a bit of depth.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) You can't beat Bram Stoker's Dracula and I just loved Salem's Lot by Stepehen King. I like my vampires to be staked through the heart not fall in love with humans!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol Lynne... what about fall in love with other vamps? :)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) Each to there own! Lol!

Patrick (horrorshow) | 9 comments Jo wrote: "I really liked Let The Right One In. I plan to read Dracula next month even though halloween isnt a big deal in the UK"

I love the Let the Right One In. If vampires exist, I would have called that book one of the twentieth century classic.

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori (barfield) I'm surely glad someone said Salem's Lot, and how about Interview With A Vampire. Both great books.

Hanako | 33 comments Linda Grace wrote: "Yeah I understand that. Have you read Vampire Academy? That is another really good series."

BDB is on my To-read list, everybody seems to love the serie. But to be fully honest, I have a problem with the books covers which are quite "steamy". I won't feel that comfortable reading them outside...!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Hehe yeah... I for sure didn't read them outside. See these books I read out loud because my husband liked the storyline as well and the content was very, how did you put it? Steamy...

message 23: by Leannear24 (new)

Leannear24 the Argeneau series is also quite good
at least i thought so :)

message 24: by Kerry (new)

Kerry White (allelomimetic) | 3 comments Salem's Lot!!!!

message 25: by Rebecka (new)

Rebecka | 3 comments i like the vampire academy series

message 26: by Dean (new)

Dean (cowboys86) | 122 comments I've only read one series centered around Vampires and that would be Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. My favorite book of the ones I've read is easily The Queen of the Damned, closely followed by Interview With The Vampire. Although I'm reading Dracula right now so maybe that will change :)

message 27: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Fred Saberhagen wrote a good vampire series based on Stoker's Dracula. One is the Dracula book, but from Vlad's POV. Others were set in the 60's & 70's. I think Thorn was my favorite. Lots of flashbacks to his breathing days, getting to meet the Medici family & such.

I like a lot of the urban/paranormal vampire stories, but they are candy books. Quick, enjoyable reads, generally eminently forgettable. My daughter likes them too, so we now have a 3' x 30" bookshelf filled with them. I think the early Anita Blake series was my favorite of them all.

message 28: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I love the Sookie Stackhouse books, but probably some of the best vampire books I've read are INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE and FEVRE DREAM by George R.R. Martin. There was also a vampire PNR series written by Linda Lael Miller some years back that started with a book called FOREVER & THE NIGHT that was great.

message 29: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Are there 9 of the Sookie books out there now? I read the last one in HB, a friend loaned it to me. No, she gave it to me for loaning her the rest. Anyway, I really liked them, but I'd have to skim them to tell you what was in them now. They're light, fun & not particularly memorable. Candy reads.

Yes, 9 of them. #10 comes out in May. It's called Dead In The Family.

message 31: by Lori (new)

Lori (heylorikay) I just joined so Im a little late after the last post. But the Blue Bloods series are some of my favorite!! I love the connection between Angels and vampires! Has anyone read these?

message 32: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 65 comments I'm on the fence with this one, I love the classic vampire books, they are gothic and dark and I love all that but I do like some of the new ones too, saying that there are a few new ones that have been too far fetched and I have been very disappointed. Main reason I joined the site was for the reveiws, I hate having my time wasted on badly written books.

message 33: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Kimberley wrote: "...Main reason I joined the site was for the reveiws, I hate having my time wasted on badly written books. "

You'll need to find friends with your taste. My daughter & I read a lot of the vampire-paranormal-urban fantasies. Our tastes vary quite a bit. Most (all?) are candy books, so I don't take them too seriously. Some work for me & others leave me cold.

I like the Sookie books, but I don't consider them great literature like "Dracula" or as well written as "I Am Legend" (the original by Matheson, not the stupid latest movie). They're fun, quick reads - candy books.

message 34: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley (trillianne) | 65 comments Thanks Jim, I'm working on it, I have found a few with similar tastes to me. I worded that comment badly so I will explain, what I mean isn't so much a poor storyline but generally badly written, poor grammer, continuity errors type things, Twilight is my biggest regret and example, it was raved about but as I started reading I found it appalling on many levels, it was weird and sickening in parts (warewolves imprinting on children springs the word child molester to mind but in this book it is taken as the norm, worryingly it is a book that is aimed at impressionable young adults). I have read the first of the sookie books and found it hard going even though it ticked my boxes and was well written I just didn't get on with it, Anne Rice I can read cover to cover in a day.

What do you mean by Candy Books by the way? this isn't a term I have come across.

message 35: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) Dracula by Bram Stoker, hands down.

'Salem's Lot, by Stephen King

Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice....

You might compare your books to mine. I judged "Twilight" more harshly than you did & never bothered reading the other 3 books, even though I had them. We seem to agree on the first Sookie book, but vary on Tolkien's & Rawling's books. Still, if you look over my 'Paranormal-Urban' shelf, you'll likely find a good selection of what might interest you. I also belong to the Supernatural Fiction Readers group. Drop by & look around. You might find even more stuff along the lines you're looking for.

message 37: by Lori (new)

Lori (heylorikay) Ahh Jo, Im so glad someone else loves those book! I cant seem to find anyone else who reads them. But your right they are so sophisticated and I love all the history in it so interesting. Have you (or anyone) read
The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass Those are really good, not really a "vampire" book but they do have a great deal of vampires in them.

message 38: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 46 comments I have to say the last vampire book I read and really enjoyed was Interview With A Vampire but I also read another, probably not well known title ,called The Stake by Richard Laymon that I thought was very creative and had a wonderfully new and different twist for an ending

message 39: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 46 comments Hey Jo are you a big Laymon fan? If so have you read Savage by him yet? If so did you like it or not? I loved it but it wasn't what I was expecting for me and actually ended up being better. That is definitely a title I felt worthy of rereading someday.

message 40: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 46 comments Yeah my shelves get like that too. I think I might have to reorganize my library a bit and maybe put up another book shelf or two.

message 41: by Summer (new)

Summer (summernoel26) | 4 comments Loved the Twilight saga.
and the Blue Bloods series was pretty good.

message 42: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 30 comments My favorite vampire book is without question The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. On the lighter side, I've read and enjoyed all of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, new one coming out in May. I, also, enjoyed the Twilight series. I'm about to start a new teen series, Cirque Du Freak with its first one, A Living Nightmare.

Melanie (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) I have the Sookie Stackhouse, the House of Night, Vampire Academy, the Vampire Diaires, Anita Blake series just to name a few.

Going to check out a few others that where mentioned here Blue Bloods, Black Dagger Brotherhood and the Morganville Vampire.

My Vampire obsession started with Anne Rices Interview with a Vampire and snowballed reading the rest one after the other. Not a fan of her new vampires. Even read her books on the Mayfair witches.

Kathy, I was hoping someone would mention The Historian; I picked it up at a rummage sale for 50 cents and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Ok....I'm reading Dark Lover from The Black Dagger Brotherhood and this is my new favorite vampire series!!!!!!

message 47: by Kathy (new)

Melanie (aka DarkBeauty73) (darkbeauty73) Kathy wrote: "It looks like I will have to try the Black Dagger Brotherhood series."

LOL I guess I better too. So many people are reading them, they must be good.

message 49: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Why are vampires so sexy ??

Maybe that dark, brooding manner they have?
