message 13: by Marta (last edited Jan 29, 2016 02:30PM) (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I am totally torn on this one. I feel that I got two huge gaping holes in my well-read-ness (I think I made this word up), and they are Charles Dickens and Stephen King. Everybody read them but me, they are literary giants with a huge body of work... I can't decide between Great Expectations and 11/22/63, so I think I am going to read both and work one into my Popsugar challenge.

Other to read authors, in order of largeness of perceived hole: Leo Tolstoy, Isaac Asimov, Sylvia Plath, Ursula K. Le Guin, Hilary Mantel, Maya Angelou, Isabel Allende, Raymond Chandler, Donna Tartt, and many more...

I also have a list of "only read one but need more" : Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, John Steinbeck, Stanisław Lem, Neil Gaiman... etc etc etc

message 14: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Thanks, Breanne! That's great to hear! I just got 11/22/63 from the library - it is massive... I guess that was one reason I never read him. I am excited!

message 15: by Michelle (last edited Jan 29, 2016 10:09PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I'm a little late coming on this progress post since I just finished this one but... here it is anyway. ;)

What are you reading this week? Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

Who is the author? I went with Rainbow Rowell because people are always raving about her. I originally had Carry On slated for this week but swapped it for Attachments when I learned it would be the group's first BOTM selection.

Do you have another "to-read author?" There are plenty of authors I'd like to sample based on rave reviews. Rick Riordan is one that immediately springs to mind.

message 16: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Marta, Great Expectations is wonderful! It was my first Dickens (I only filled that hole last year) and I think it was a great book to start with. There are some really fantastic characters, and it was also really funny - which I didn't expect.

message 17: by Marta (last edited Jan 30, 2016 08:56AM) (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments That sounds great, Jody! I saw your review, actually, and I did not realize it was funny, so I am excited about it! Now you see why I can't make up my mind... :)

message 18: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Emm, I read Rainbow Rowell the first time last year and now I read all of hers except Attachments. I think her young adult books are better, I did not like Landline as much. I just finished Carry On though and I loved it!

message 19: by Mai (new)

Mai | 102 comments - What are you reading this week?
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, #1) by Mark Twain

- Who is the author?
Mark Twain

- Do you have another "to read author"?
There are quite a few authors who's work I want to read such as Louisa may Alcott, Kenneth Grahame just to name a few

message 20: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 383 comments What are you reading this week? Bouvard and Pecuchet

- Who is the author? Gustave Flaubert

- Do you have another "to read author"? As she is an Arizona author, I feel I should have read Diane Gabaldon by now.

message 21: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments What are you reading this week?
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee

Who is the author?
Edward Albee

Do you have another "to read author"?
Not really. I have favorite authors that I will seek out their work, but very rarely (if ever) do I have a specific author I've never read before that is on a TBR list. It's usally the book that sounds interesting that draws my attention instead of who wrote it.

I cheated a little with this one. I picked this book because I felt I should have read it by now, because it seems to be a literary staple. I noticed very little of who wrote it until after I selected the book.

message 22: by Stacey (last edited Feb 11, 2016 09:20PM) (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments - What are you reading this week? Like several others in our group challenge, I'm reading 11/22/63

- Who is the author? Stephen King
- Do you have another "to read author"? Yes, many others, in fact. For instance, I've never read Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ray Bradbury, Patricia Highsmith, Kingsley Amis, John Cheever, Norman Mailer, Pete Hamill, Saul Bellow. Some of these folks have works coming up on my challenge list, so I'll be reading them; others I need to add to my TBR list. There are also a lot of authors whom I was just introduced to via the 2015 challenge, like Dickens' A Christmas Carol and Joseph Heller's Catch-22. I'm looking forward to reading more of their work in the future.

As for Stephen King, I've read Christine, Cujo and The Gunslinger, but never any of his more popular works. I'm not his greatest fan, as I've never been very interested in the horror genre and I find some of his writing too folksy or overloaded with pop references. But 11/22/63 seems to be entirely different for him - it's about time travel and "what if's" and it's very philosophical as well.

Just finished the book. Whew...but, well worth the long read. I loved this novel.

message 23: by Cris (new)

Cris (cris_lectora) - What are you reading this week?
Mrs. Dalloway

- Who is the author?
Virginia Woolf

- Do you have another "to read author"?
Probably a zillion. I feel I haven't read enough classics, so a few of those authors could probably be listed.

message 24: by Elise (new)

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | -7 comments - What are you reading this week?

I'm reading To the Lighthouse.

- Who is the author?

I'm also trying Virginia Woolf for the first time. I bought an omnibus of her works, so I hope I enjoy it and want to read the others! I'll be reading the reviews of Mrs Dalloway and Orlando with interest ;)

- Do you have another "to read author"?

I have got a list of to-read authors - like all my lists, it gets longer not shorter! Some that come to mind are Franz Kafka, H. G. Wells, Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway. There are some classics I need to get into!

message 25: by Francesca (new)

Francesca (eufrosine85) | 67 comments - What are you reading this week? for this week, I chose In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

- Who is the author? I never read something by T. Capote and several persons told me I should!

- Do you have another "to read author"?
I hava a long list of never-read authors... I will try to shorten it this year!!! for exemple: Thomas Mann, Fedor Dostoevsky, Jane Austen, Bronte sisters, Mary Shelley, James Joyce, George Orwell, etc..

message 26: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn whitney (carawhitney) | 11 comments What are you reading this week?
I read The Lightning Thief

- Who is the author?
Rick Riordan

- Do you have another "to read author"?
Brandon Sanderson whose books I'm also going to start reading this year

message 27: by Angela (new)

Angela | 95 comments I'm actually reading this in week 7, due to a lack of time to get to the library to get "actual" books, so I needed something I could get on my kindle. :)

Frankenstein

Mary Shelley

I'm scared to admit this, but I've never read anything by Mark Twain. (eek!) That's probably the biggest "to read author" on my list.

message 28: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (TheSlothReader) For this challenge, I read The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal YA. It was great.

message 29: by Libscigrl (new)

Libscigrl | 39 comments For this week, I read Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

I also have not read any Alan Paton, Faulkner, or James Joyce. I'm fixing the Faulkner problem next!

GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments What are you reading this week?
Secret Agent Grandma
Who is the author?
R.L. Stine
Do you have another "to read author"?
Neil Gaiman

I feel as though I cheated on this one. I also had to read a horror book for another challenge and decided to kill two birds with one stone. I have two sons and I never bought these for them, even though I had heard a lot about the author. I'm also a wuss- I knew I could never handle hard core horror. And now I'm a grandmother with a grandson who just started into this series. So I'm okay with this!

Carolyn, check out The Rithmatist. My son is a huge Sanderson fan and he had me read this one. I loved it!

message 32: by Kira (new)

Kira | 9 comments Eggs by Jerry Spinelli This is the Eighth challenge I completed and I decided to read Eggs by Jerry Spinelli. I originally wanted to read Stargirl by Spinelli, but opted for this since it was mega cheap on bookoutlet. I thought this was a very charming middle grade read that only took me a little over an hour to complete. I am looking forward to reading more works by Jerry Spinelli.

message 33: by Amber (new)

Amber | 23 comments What are you reading this week?
Persuasion by Jane Austen

Who is the author? Jane Austen

Do you have another "to read author"?
For Classics: Hemingway Ernest, Charlotte Brontë and Emily Brontë
For more current/bestsellers: Rainbow Rowell (although since reading Persuasion I have read Eleanor and Park so technically I can check her off but she was one I was considering for this week), Jonathan Safran Foer and (believe it or not) Stephen King

message 34: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments I listened to the audiobook The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Tales by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I have LOTS of other "to read authors" including Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Michael Moorcock, Frank Herbert, Nelson DeMille, and Philip Roth. I hope to read all of them in 2016!

message 35: by Tegan (new)

Tegan | 1 comments - What are you reading this week? I read The First Discworld Novels the Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett and loved it, I would definitely recommend it for anyone who loves fantasy novels (I will certainly be carrying on reading the discworld series).
- Do you have another "to read author"? lots, but top of my list is probably John Steinbeck

message 36: by Karen (new)

Karen (winterscomin) | 41 comments Annika wrote: "Karen, I can definitely recommend Trudi Canavan's work. The Magicians' Guild and the rest of the trilogy are some of my favourite books, I still reread them every now and then!..."

Thanks Annika, gosh I should check replies more often. Unfortunately Canavan didn't make it on to my 2016 list, but who knows I might be able to squeeze some of those books into the year somewhere anyway!
As for Wheel of Time, I've now read the first 3 books and aside from being a little over the top in terms of descriptions and plot dragging a bit I've been enjoying it. I've heard books ..I think 8 to 11 are the most frustrating to get through though, so I'm not looking too forward to that (if I ever get there)

Oryx and Crake

Margaret Atwood

- Do you have another "to read author"?
I think I addressed the "wow I never read him/her" well in 2015 and 2016. However, Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Kurt Vonnegut probably need to end in my TBR at some point.

message 42: by L (new)

L | 127 comments - What are you reading this week?
This week I will be reading Umbrella which I have because in 2012 I bought the Booker Prize shortlist bundle. Normally I would not choose stream of consciousness but I guess it is good to get outside of your comfort zone occasionally!

- Who is the author?
The author is Will Self - I have read lots of his newspaper articles and his style is a fairly acid humour with lots of long words! I have no idea what his novels are like though so this may be interesting.

- Do you have another "to read author"?
To my shame I have never read J.R.R. Tolkien (partly because Peter Jackson so obligingly made the Lord of the Rings films).

Also I discovered via a Pub Quiz that James Patterson has been the most borrowed author every single year from 2006 to date (according to the British Library) and yet I have never even heard of any of his books! So perhaps I should read one of those too.
