The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge discussion

With the revival of the Gilmore Girls show by Netflix, it has me wondering:

What would Rory be reading/have read since the show ended several years ago? What books would have been featured on the TV series?

I think she would've read " I am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai

I think she would read "Dear Committee Members" by Julie Schumacher and "Bad Feminist" by Roxanne Gay.

If they have her read Someday Someday Maybe it would be an awesome 4th wall break. DeadPool would do that but I don't know if GG would.

I think that Rory is now reading an old favourite (maybe Anna Karenina?) and maybe Out by Natsuo Kirino

Rory was an admirer of Hillary Clinton. She would have read her Hard Choices two years ago.

I think she would have read 'The Book Thief'.
It is on top of my (pretty large) stack right now.

I think she would be reading the next catch-22 book which came out in 1994 but wasn't well known at the time. I think she would finish up the Sue Grafton series. (Which sadly, ends at 'Y') And I think she would be reading about politics still as that has always interested her. There are SO many books to read, that I can't imagine that she would have trouble finding anything to read. I'm not really worried about it either. As I'm still working on finishing this list of books that a fictional character read. :)

Michelle Obama's new book. I think she'd also have read Lincoln in the Bardo.

I think she would've read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

I agree about the goldfinch as well. Its on my own reading list too.

I just finished The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and since it’s about an Ivy League English major who is essentially caught in a love triangle, I’d say it has Rory written all over it!

I feel like she would love Donna Tartt and many known "Dark Academia" books. I think she would also love many of the women's fiction books on the market like Convenience Store Women by Sayaka Murata. The obvious cheesy rom-coms would maybe be in her collection as well, an author I think she would like is Emily Henry. I also imagine her loving Taylor Jenkins Reid!

She was rereading Anna Karenina in the revival, so she still likes Classic novels. If she has read all the British, American, and Russian Classics and is just reading them again, well, she'll have to move on at some point. Many countries have great literary Classics.

She also seemed interested in the lives and works of 20th century women writers, like Sylvia Plath and Dorothy Parker. I think she even mentioned a few in the valedictorian speech. She's probably still on that, including Malala and other 21st century women.

I think she would read The Little Liar by Mitch Albom. Amazing work of historical fiction.

definitely no to colleen hoover, rory wouldn't even consider any of her books for a second. i do agree with donna tartt, mieko kawakami and other japanese authors, not sure about murakami though (maybe a book or two). joan didion, toni morrison, other female authors. the virgin suicides, the idiot, the secret history, etc would probably be among her picks. i think rory would probably stick to classics and literary fiction as opposed to other genres.

i saw that she also read a good chunk of poetry too-- so some modern poets like maggie nelson, ocean vuong, ada limon, and some poets from the late 1900s like audre lorde, mary oliver, and louise gluck. big no to insta poetry for sure though
