Do you have duplicate copies of books in your collection? If so, what books and why?

I have my mis-matched paperback copies (the cover of the third book does not match the other two) of The Lord of the Rings, which I have read and re-read multiple times;
I have a leather-bound set that my brother gave me years ago, of which I have only read part of the first book;
and I have various other paperback copies that I have never read but bought because the covers were different.

I also have a hardcover Weis/Hickman book (can't remember the name of it at the moment) I found at a used bookstore, even though I knew i had the paperback at home, because it was autographed.

I have multiple copies of just a few. There was a Peter S Beagle book or two that I had bought in paperback and then managed to find hardcover or trade. Likewise, Connie Willis' Bellwether and To Say Nothing of the Dog. I keep the hardcovers and am willing to lend paperback out, or use to read where they might get damaged. :)

Yes, I have multiples...Like Carol, I have paperbacks that travel. I also tend to buy the book club omnibus editions of series I love so that I can get the author to sign them.(Because signed books are...signed. lol)

And now I'm getting the ebook versions of my re-reads so that I'll have them on my kindle. Oh, and the audio book version because the State police frown on reading while driving.

I have a couple of dups but not as many as I used to.

I have double copies of Deadhouse Gates (a paperback to travel like Carol) and I think I have two copies of some Andre Norton books.

I have two copies of Magic Bites but one is a special edition.

I have multiple copies of many books. A few were purely by accident. I can only afford this because I do 55%t of my shopping at used book stores.

I have a special love of hardcovers, especially if the cover is embossed or particularly pleasing in some way. I like to think that these books will last long after me.

I have all the hardcovers of the Kushiel series, and two paperbacks of the first book, Kushiel's Dart. The original one I bought, that's falling apart and held together with a rubber band (sentimental value), a travel copy, and the hardcover.

I have a hardcover special edition of the Princess Bride and a paperback version that a classmate gave back in high school.

If I like the looks of one cover over a different edition, I'll re-buy it then donate/sell/give away the older copy.

I also now have the problem of e-book duplicates. There's holes in my Rirya Revelations collection because I bought one ebook version and the rest in trade paperback. But you can't re-sell ebooks...right?

You know, this makes me want to keep all the old ebook readers and get an old desktop. So I can take all the shitty ebooks and dup ebooks and put them on the deesktop only.

Then if someone ask to borrow a book...I can loan them an old rickety ebook reader.

Here and there, over the years, I have collected duplicate copies of a few books. Mostly, because a book is wearing out. Sometimes, because it is within an omnibus.
Of course, some I have are e-book copies. (I like taking all my books with me ;)

Recently, I found that I had a couple of books that are duplicates; not because I wanted them, but because I did not realise I had them already.
Dang new covers.

I was really picky when I was a teen. My cat Rosella clawed the corner of one of my favorite fantasy paperbacks, so I had to get a new one. Yeah, OCD, right?

Now I'd just take that down to the public library and put it on the free shelves and forget about it.

After moving last summer I have about 6 books total now, kind of changes your perspective. :)

I collect Harry Potters in different languages.. First it was because I only had them in Dutch, my mother-language and that I wanted to have 'm in the original language. So then I had some of them in English. The next step was that I had trouble with learning French at school and I figured reading a book that I know by heart in French would help, so that happened. After that I sort of rolled into buying a Harry Potter in every country I visited. Because let's face it; they have been translated into any language imaginable...

Today I have all of the Dutch ones, 4 Dutch listening books and one English listening book.
I also have The Philosopher Stone in English, Greek and Hungarian, The Chamber of Secrets in Spanish, The Prisoner of Azkaban in French and Russian, The Goblet of Fire in English, The Order of the Phoenix in Finnish, The Half-blood Prince in Italian and The Deathly Hallows in English.

I have a few duplicates, that old 'oooh a new book, I'll get this...' Arrive home, check blurb and title etc and realise it's a new cover. Now it's more of a 'don't want to carry that huge paperback, hmmmm where my kindle..'

*snicker* would totally be worth it just to see the look on their face. Chances are they might even return it if its a 'valuable' machine and not *just* a book.

that's actually a really awesome idea. Instead of buying some kind of knick-knack a book momento sounds so much better.

Yeah, and the best part is that most of them have different covers! Some are really beautiful!

I know, right? And take better care of it, too.

I often keep *extra* copies of my favorites in used paperbacks. This way I can pass them on without being concerned about them being returned ... a gift rather than a loan. And my hardback copies are safe!

When I moved to the UK, I packed up all my books for shipping and put them in a storage unit in California until I had time to send all my stuff to my new home. And...they're still there, two plus years later. And because I'm terribly impatient about books sometimes, I've definitely ended up with more than a few copies of the same book; I need them now!

It's rare I keep multiple copies since I'm always out of room. Some sneak in there to stay for an assortment of strange reasons sometimes.
