Cursor's Fury (Codex Alera, #3) by Jim Butcher Cursor's Fury, by Jim Butcher

The power-hungry High Lord of Kalare has launched a rebellion against the aging First Lord, Gaius Sextus, who with the loyal forces of Alera must fight beside the unlikeliest of allies-the equally contentious High Lord of Aquitaine.

Meanwhile, young Tavi of Calderon joins a newly formed legion under an assumed name even as the ruthless Kalare unites with the Canim, bestial enemies of the realm whose vast numbers spell certain doom for Alera. When treachery from within destroys the army's command structure, Tavi finds himself leading an inexperienced, poorly equipped legion-the only force standing between the Canim horde and the war-torn realm.

ShoSho, it's a pretty intense book, isn't it?

1. Yeah, Tavi is really loyal, and sees how not-nice the world is

2. It looks that way to me too

3. I just am not sure on this one. It could go either way

4. Just wait until you find out!

5. Yes, Rook is a real wild card here

6. Just be patient. You'll find out. The reveal is dragged out though, I'm with you there

Fade seemed to think it was to protect him from the conflict in Siri. I don't think he could have predicted Canim attack.

message 22: by Gisela, Moderator (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 4022 comments No, that's why he was sent to the legion. But before joining he went to Appia to research the Romans. Gaius said it was to keep Tavi out of trouble. But Gaius always has more than one motive. Maybe to give him a chance to learn furyless technology?

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 4022 comments Definitely keep him out of trouble! Tavi is a trouble magnet! Captain Scipio indeed!

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Chapter 27

Isana is trying to heal Fade . Tavi just found Ehren in the shed. Bernard and Amara went for a walk ;)

What I'm worried about is Kalare's sister on the only legion between the Canim and the Alera! Do you think it was deliberate and Kalare knew that legion would end up defending the bridge?

What was that gem in the silk purse? I'm sure it's something very critical. I'm just wondering why Tavi kept the purse .He should have got rid of the silk purse and kept the coins in his own purse.

-I don't recall if there is any more explanation about Isana's feelings, but got the impression for this book in particular that (view spoiler)

-Tavi is going to be so pissed -- Yes, I think he will be. While it led to him developing strengths no one else has, I can't imagine he'll feel the years of feeling less than everyone else and the bullying and pity he received was worth it

-5 year development--That was the impression I had

-Tavi had a "feeling". Did Gaius have a feeling that he should send Tavi there? -- I think their feelings have to do with their ability to understand the longer term ramifications. As for Tavi's new situation, I don't think he's a threat (at this point anyway).

-Did you suspect Fidelius? Can you begin to understand why I like him? -- I've liked him all along. He's a complex character.

-While Isana sees Gaius as a manipulative bastard who practicaly kidnapped Tavi. Gaius is also an old man who... -- I think Gaius knew about Tavi before before, but only acted once Tavi ended up in the middle of a major event showing his ingenuity.

-I agree that Tavi is a great wildcard. He will, of course, end up in more crazy situations not of his choosing. So, the next books will continue to have incredible action.

I think there's more to what happened. Isana blames Gaius for Septimus and Alia's deaths. Opposing her marriage is a weak excuse and Isana doesn't strike me as the sort to hold a grudge. So forher to hold a grudge against Gaius something big must have happened.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I'm done! A few thoughts [

-I still don't get why Isana hates Gaius... I think she hates him for the war itself which doesn't make sense. She's blaming him for her sister's death and rice's.

-Tavi is going to be so pissed at Isana when he learns that she purposely made him furyless he'll be pissed but in time he'll forgive her. He'll be more pissed when he figure out she's his mother and not his aunt.

-Tavi and Kitai both were able to turn on/off the fury lamps 5 years after they bonded. Septimus' furies manifested when he was five. Did the bond undo what Isana did to Tavi? Will he be "normal" now? I loved that Kitai can do it too. It'll be useful when she becomes the first lady ;) I didn't catch the five years thing at first but it makes sense that their bonding was like a new birth for him. He'll gradually gets furies of his own. But he'll never be normal

-Tavi had a "feeling" about the legion. Did Gaius have a feeling that he should send Tavi there? Gaius couldn't know what would happen but now if he acknowledges Tavi as Princeps, Tavi has a whole legion loyal to him. that's the only explanation that I can think of.

-Did you suspect Marcus/Fidelias? Can you begin to understand why I like him? I only figure it out when he talked about creating his face. What I want to know is when and how he decided to go back to Gaus. Was it the end of the last book?
I'm undecided about him yet. I understand that he does what he thinks is best for the realm but he doesn't care who he hurts in the process.

-While Isana sees Gaius as a manipulative bastard who practicaly kidnapped Tavi. Gaius is also an old man who found out he had a grandson who he couldn't publicly acknowledge, for Tavi's safety, so he made Tavi his page and in so doing got to know him and teach him, he's been preparing Tavi to rule Alera. I like Gauis, I think he's a good ruler even if he's become too old.
One thing about the epilogue, I thought Gauis sent Amara to Cauldron because he knew about Tavi now I'm not sure. He could've sent her because he had a feeling. Can you pinpoint the moment he found out about Tavi being his grandson?

-Like Fidelias said Tavi has a accomplished great things without furies I'm looking forward to what he'll do now. Oh me too, I can't wait for the next book.

I think it is more that he's been away from Isana for 5 years, so is finally developing -- so he's a small child in a world of men in terms of furies.

I hadn't thought of that. Isana did say that she prevented his talents from ever emerging, until the water furies around the Steadholt were so used to it that I hardly needed to think about it at all.

She never says anything about stopping.

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 4022 comments ShoSho wrote: "Can you pinpoint the moment he found out about Tavi being his grandson? "

No, I can't remember and I don't think we've been inside Gaius' head. So what we know of him is through his interactions with others.

message 46: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara | 2335 comments Gisela wrote: "She never says anything about stopping."

No, but Tavi was far away, and Isana didn't have any control over the furies in the capital. So, he's been away from her influence for 5 years.

message 47: by ShoSho , Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I think it's a mix of both these things, being away from cauldron and Isana and his bond with Kitai.
