Nicole This topic generates a lot of discussion on some of the other boards I'm on so I thought it might be fun for Fringe Fiction. It's a place to post what indie/self-published book you are currently reading and maybe something on what you think about the book so far. Sorry if this topic has been started elsewhere already. I looked but couldn't find it.

I've just started (only one chapter in) Sky Lands: The Gift Stones by TL Rese (unfortunately there's no book cover photo for me to post). I won it in a goodreads giveaway. This book currently has no ratings or reviews so I have no idea what to expect.

message 2: by Mark (new)

Mark Well I'm reading (actually re-reading) East of Eden by John Steinbeck, but that would hardly count as an indie.
The last indie I read was Eden Fell by our own Lily.
Next up is The Only Boy by Jordan Locke.

Library Lady 📚 | 186 comments White Chalk by Pavarti K. Tyler and In Your Dreams (In Your Dreams, #1) by Amy Martin right now.

message 4: by Sara (new)

Sara Thompson (sdpogue) I can't tell you what is Indie or not when it comes to what I am reading. Right now I know what I am reading is not since I am reading Lemony Snicket's newest series. At this moment, I'm stepping away from anything independent and reading more popular books. After Lemony Snicket, I have Born of Illusion (a friend's book but traditional published) and a Stephen King novel.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 467 comments For the last year or so I've only been reading Indies.
I just finished Luminous Shadows and Vampires and Vixens and I'm getting ready to read Safe Hex With a Vampire

I know what you mean. I'm actually on the last book in that series: Braedrics Bane. It's not something I would normally read, but I do really enjoy these books.

message 9: by Mark (new)

Mark Hey Sara, which Stephen King novel are you going to be reading?

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara Thompson (sdpogue) I think the title is Wind Through the Keyhole - it's the latest book from the Dark Tower series. I'm thinking of picking up Doctor Sleep as well but haven't gotten there yet.

message 11: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Im currently reading Obsessive by Isobel Irons from the issues series. I loved Promiscuous (is just a fancy word for Slutty) by Isobel Irons the first book in the series, so I hope this one is just as good.

message 12: by Mark (new)

Mark I love The Dark Tower. The Wind Through the Keyhole is pretty good. Dr. Sleep, I was less than impressed with. Not saying don't read it, but I would set the bar low

message 13: by Sara (new)

Sara Thompson (sdpogue) I usually set the King bar pretty low. Not to say he is not a good writer but he's inconsistent. I love one book and then the next will be meh. After the first book, The Dark Tower series quickly became some of my favorite books but getting through that first book was hard.

Library Lady 📚 | 186 comments Glad to see I'm not the only person on earth who didn't love The Gunslinger. I've read it twice, and have never read the rest because I wasn't impressed enough with the first one to continue the series.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm slogging through Spider's bite by Jennifer Estep. It's the first of a series about a female assassin in a supernatural alternate Earth. She works in the American south. I've just gotten into it (5 chapters in), and it isn't moving me. While I have a soft spot for the ass-kicking female, I like them more subtle than this. They should be more seductive than intimidating, feel fear and make it work to their advantage; in short, they shouldn't act like small men. This is showing signs that it might take off, and when I finish it, I will write a review if I can reasonably give it at least 3 stars. I won't rate lower than that, because I can't bring myself to tell a professional author that they don't know what they're doing...

Library Lady 📚 | 186 comments I take it you don't like Katniss...

message 17: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 08, 2014 11:27AM) (new)

Don't like any work that depicts the violent exploitation of children for the entertainment of adults. Eowyn of Lord of the Rings is a good female warrior, as is Cattie-brie of R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series. If, as you read, you could mentally change the gender to male, and the female warrior reads just as well either way, the author has missed the boat. There should be a point to having a female badass other than just to describe female body parts in action.

message 18: by Mark (new)

Mark Sara and Lena,

I felt the same way about The Gunslinger. A rather boring book and any time I recommend the series to someone I always point out that you kinda have to read the first book, but it's not going to be that entertaining to you.
Only the last part, The Gunslinger and the Man in Black, had me interested to continue.
Once I started reading the second book though, I was hooked.

Oddly enough I'm not reading an indie authors book. Usually I am but my kindle is down atm. I am currently reading Confessions of an English Opium Eater by Thomas de Quincey.

How far along are you?

message 23: by Jason (new)

Jason Parent | 123 comments About 60% done now. Predictable so far, yet still fun. It's told in a rather unique way, too. Like snippets of the lead's life from very young to middle age (so far)

Yes, it's got a very unique approach. I liked this one quite a bit.

message 25: by Sara (new)

Sara Thompson (sdpogue) I did The Gunslinger as a book on tape - I had to. There were somethings about that book I really liked but overall it was a rough book to read. I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one who thought so. After that I devoured the books (in some cases after waiting a really long time for it to get published). I've been reading the graphic novels as well.

I share your thoughts on The Gunslinger. I wonder if I should have read the more recent versions over the original

Library Lady 📚 | 186 comments I read it once and listened to it on audiobook the second time.

message 28: by Mark (new)

Mark I'll give him a bit of a pass on the first book, I guess for two reasons: 1. he was in college when he started it and was clearly still learning his craft 2. the series that followed from it is just one of the best things I've ever read.

Still wouldn't give it more than two stars though.

Currently reading The Dear War Zombie Series by George Cook III. So far I've read book one along with the short stories and flash fiction that followed the end of part one. Odd place to put short stories and flash fiction but it works! I'll be getting started on Book 2, Abomination sometime between tonight and tomorrow.

message 30: by Anne (new)

Anne Berkeley (aberkeley) I have so many books on my list, but the next I'm planning to read is The King. I just love the BDB series.

message 32: by Mark (new)

Mark I read Rushed, Sarah. I'll be interested to hear if you share my point of view on the book.

George Cook III? Does he live in Hawaii, by any chance?

I'm not sure, I don't believe so. His profile says he's from Hillside.

M.D. Meyer (mdmeyer) | 156 comments I'm not sure if he's indie but I'm reading The House Of Lost Souls. I saw a review by someone I follow and the plot sounded intriguing. It is also listed as Horror/Suspense which is a genre I'm exploring at the moment.

Lori Clark (clarklori) | 70 comments Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2) by Karina Halle

She's not indie anymore... and she is one of my favorite authors. <3

message 37: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Elizabeth is Missing I am about one third of the way through and it is really really good so far.

message 38: by J.S. (new)

J.S. (jsedge) | 356 comments I'm currently reading Days of Throbbing Gristle by fellow Fringe Fiction author Kevin Cole. Extremely good so far. A step outside of my usual, but proving very humorous and engaging :) It won a few extra brownie points by mentioning Geordies (Folk of Newcastle, UK) cos I'm a Geordie so it's all like 'woop!'.

I've been super impressed by all indie books I've read from this site. Jennifer, Wren and Kevin have all produced high quality and fully enjoyable reads. So glad I haven't had to give below 3* thus far...even if I find scathing reviews a little easier to write than glowing ones (says a lot about my character, huh? :p)

message 39: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Cole (kevin_cole) I would be honored to be scathed by Joanne. She beat up The Boy Who Sneaks in My Bedroom Window so thoroughly that I'll never forget his black and blue face :-D

message 40: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Rand I've just started reading Crime and Punishment because it's been on my reading list for longer than I've been on goodreads. It's not as hard to get through as I was expecting.

Is this the right place for this post? If you put it in the right place it'll be easier for prospective readers to find. :-)
