Liz (elizziebooks) | 30 comments Were you surprised about the reveal of Harper's "Professor X"? Do you think Harper is making the right decision regarding her fate?

message 2: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 11 comments Lol I mean she's probably gonna end up being the paladin again. ITS HER DESTINY. But ya I wasn't expecting Professor X. I actually thought they would figure everything out from a bad guy or something but I guess not.
Loving this book so far!!!! XD

message 3: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Boom | 3 comments I know right! I am loving this book so far too!!!!

message 4: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments This book is making me laugh so hard along the way .. It's AMAZING so far.. I was kinda suspecting who the Professor X would turn out to be but the big reveal kinda shocked me still. I just love the way it's written :) so witty and relateable!!! It was kinda obvious that Harper would decline her position as paladin because honestly no one wants to die for a person they hate.. So I thought the decision was pretty realistic.. I am sure something will force her to accept her fate soon though --- looking forward to more Rebel Belle :)

message 5: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Boom | 3 comments Yah, it was kind of obvious that Harper would decline her position as paladin! The Book is soo good so far! Can't wait for more!

Abby (LovingTheBookLife) | 6 comments Aaaahhhh!! Just picked this up from the bookstore today and am just about to start it! Super excited!!

message 7: by Justice (new)

Justice Hill (thelibraryofme) | 4 comments I didn't expect for "Professor X" to be Sayla Stark. She isn't mentioned a lot in the beginning of the book and I actually forgot about her until after the car chase with Harper and David. I honestly thought that her sister Leigh Anne would somehow not be dead and come back to help her, but I guess that idea is out the window. I also think Harper is being selfish in regards to her fate. She doesn't care if the world may be in danger, all she's worried about is how her life is going to change, her boyfriend, and her future plans.
However I really love this book. I never would have picked it up if not for the Read-Along. This might even end up being one of my favorite books after I read it, but that depends on how the ending plays out. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this book.

Sarah (sarah_patch182) | 9 comments I'm loving this book!!! So much action and wittiness! I know nothing has really happened yet but I ship David and Harper so hard!

message 9: by Mari (new)

Mari (mari_ana_) | 12 comments I didn't expect it either my chin dropped for a moment :) Maybe her sister's car accident was caused by the same guys that are trying to kill david?

No one said the world might be in danger or maybe i didnt get to that yet. When David dies a new oracle is born right? So I do understand Harpers perspektive she just needs to get her head aroud the idea first!

Does anone know if this is a series?

message 10: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Teeler | 8 comments I didn't realize that I wasn't trying to guess who her "professor X" was going too be, but at the same time I wasn't all that surprised that it was Saylor Stark! she seemed a bit fishy after the chase scene so I really didn't put it past her.
I wouldn't say she's making the wrong nor the right decision. I mean it's her life… if she didn't want to be someone's guardian in other words she shouldn't have to. But I honestly don't think this is something she can get herself out of.. she always gets the feeling when David is in trouble, Its not like that is something anybody can ignore. I think she ends up excepting her fate which she should! So far I'm having a hard time putting the book down, even with my list of things to get done today! Oh well.. this is what happens when you're a book nerd haha.

message 11: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (arielbissett) I LOVED that it was Saylor! It made perfect sense really, considering that David is the Oracle. I felt such a sense of relief when we found it was her.. stuff was starting to get really real with the car chase and everything and I was feeling stressed for her and David. Yeah Saylor is kind of annoying, but she seems strong.
In regards to her fate, I think Harper is in a state of denial. But that's pretty realistic.. you can't just become a superhero and abandon your old life. It's kind of sad, honestly. She's been working really hard towards a certain life and it's being torn from her. She needs time to get over it.. if she ever does!

message 12: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | 31 comments I actually thought that Saylor would turn out to be a villain. ;) I'm glad I was wrong!
I like Harper's realistic reaction to the situation, but I hope she'll change her mind!
So excited to find out how the fight with Blythe turns out!

message 13: by Alana (new)

Alana | 3 comments I'm loving it so far! I just got it this morning and I'm already past halfway done. I just think Harper is being kind of selfish. She only agreed to be paladin when she realized her life was in danger -,- other than that its great!

message 14: by Alana (new)

Alana | 3 comments Btw, who else imagines Saylor as Constance from ahs? I know Saylor isn't blonde, but she just reminds me of her.

message 15: by Keely (new)

Keely | 2 comments Alana wrote: "Btw, who else imagines Saylor as Constance from ahs? I know Saylor isn't blonde, but she just reminds me of her."
omg, i dont even watch the show but that is exactly how i pictured her, if there ever is a movie she would be the perfect person to play the role

message 16: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 24 comments I am seriously loving every minute of this book. I wasn't really thinking of who "Professor X" could be but it didn't really surprise me that it was Saylor. I had a feeling she knew something about David, especially since David has told her about his dreams and she didn't seem to think too much of it. I understand Harper not wanting to give up her life (literally, she could die) for David, especially considering he's always been a jerk to her. But it is part of her destiny and usually you can't run away from destiny so she'll definitely end up being his Paladin whether she wants to or not. Though if it were me, I'd probably try to find a way to pass on the powers to someone else, like Mr. Hall did. No way I'd risk my life for David.

message 17: by Lois (new)

Lois | 11 comments I like how Harper didn't accept her 'destiny' at once. So many protagonists just embrace the supernatural immediately, when clearly any normal person does not want to die for someone they hate.
I guessed Saylor Stark was Professor X after the whole driving into Harper's fence incident. I mean, it kind of makes sense for the one person who is close to David to be the one who knows.
Harper and David are probably going to end up together, but I can only hope David becomes a nicer person. I mean, even if he does have some ulterior motive for being mean to her, why would you prey on someone who was clearly ill?

Jesse (JesseTheReader) (jessethereader) | 210 comments Mod
I was really surprised to find that Professor X was Saylor! I didn't see that coming at all. I was also shocked to find that she really wasn't David's aunt. HELLO PLOT TWIST. xD Looking back on it though, I probably should have seen it coming. I'm starting to feel really bad for Harper. She basically has no choice but to be David's paladin.

message 19: by J. (new)

J. (defiantconfusion) I'm also feeling bad for Harper having to give up her life plans in order to fulfill this "destiny" that has suddenly appeared. Wondering how things will turn out and how she'll finally come to terms with her destiny.

It's hard to make me laugh, but this book's humor is just perfect. It keeps getting more witty. I'm so glad for the humorous tone because I don't think I would have liked this story without it.

message 20: by Britnee (new)

Britnee Marquez | 5 comments I wasn't surprised that Saylor knew about this. It seemed fitting and makes sense for the story. I love how Saylor asks Harper if she is ready to except her fate and she's like "nahh, I'm good. thanks for the offer but I'm going to do my own thing." It's very realistic and she already knows that with great power comes great responsibility since she's watched all of those superhero films. I'm sure she will rise to the occasion though, she is a strong girl.

message 21: by Liv (new)

Liv (oliviareadstoomuch) This book just keeps getting better and better through each passing chapter I am so hooked. I kind of expected Professor X to be who they are revealed to be. I mean, it only makes sense, and the explanation was just. However, I'm kind of disappointed that Harper didn't want to protect David anymore come on Harper!!!! Anyway the end of ch 20 was intense!!!! Did not see that coming! Can't wait to keep reading!

message 22: by Elin (new)

Elin Sköld (eliinjohanna) | 10 comments Oh my, this book just gets better and better! I can't put it down and I just want to know what happens after every chapter. I hardly have any words for this book! It's just so good!!

message 23: by Sidney (new)

Sidney | 3 comments I can't believe that it was Saylor!!! Definitely didn't see that one coming! But it makes so much sense, and the story is really starting to unfold. I am seriously enjoying the supernatural and historical aspects. Despite the sacrifice, I really hope that Harper owns up to her full responsibility as Paladin, because it seems obvious to me that David will become extremely powerful and will need a protector. I ship David and Harper so hard.

message 24: by Kassey (new)

Kassey (kclynne) | 18 comments Finding out it was Saylor was a complete shock to me. When she said "So you're our new paladin, well I guess we are fucked" I literally screamed "WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED" I'm loving this book so much, and I can't even with the Carmen Sandiego scene David is so snarky I love him. Can we talk about Ryan and Mary Beth (I think that's her name) what's up with that? Is Ryan just sick of this whole thing with Harper and decided to use this chick to piss her off or is he actually interested? In any case JERK!
Harper's reaction to the whole thing is extremely realistic, that thing where you fully embrace new abbilites that appear out of nowhere only happens in movies. Of course she's gonna think about her future and her life, she's worked hard for all those things it's unfair to ask her to throw them away for someone she hates (or thinks she hates #Harvid). But we all know she'll end up being the Paladin.

message 25: by Crissie (new)

Crissie Wood (ctwood09) | 9 comments I wasn't really surprised WHO Harper's Mr. X was. I knew say lot knew something, but I was surprised she wasn't actually David's aunt. I figured whatever David was was a runs-in-the-family kind of thing. I know I'm not supposed to agree with Harper's choice to not get involved but honestly I'm not really against it. I mean she didn't ask for this and she has her own life... Also I felt like it was a real choice. Something a teenage girl who wants to be governor one day would do and say. I was curious why neither her nor David asked if the powers could be past when not dying...

message 26: by Rowan (new)

Rowan | 1 comments Oh the twist till this very moment is amazing! David is taking this better than I would ever. And Harper is so frustrated, her perfect life is soon to be changed.. forever! THE FEELS

message 27: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (athousandliveslived) | 7 comments I was totally surprised to find out that it was Saylor. I just expected her to be some grumpy old lady who "was David's aunt." There are still so many questions that I still have... and hopefully they'll be answered by the end.

I wasn't surprised with Harper's reaction because I'd react the same way too. Putting your life out and giving everything up for a guy you hate is absolute torture, but I really hope that something romantic will happen between David and Harper... because well, I just love David. :)

message 28: by Trista (new)

Trista (islandgeekgirl) | 10 comments Nothing's really shocking me so far but I'm enjoying it. This part felt a little slower than the first ten chapters. Really can't help smiling a little at every 'Pres'.

message 29: by Mom2triplets04 (new)

Mom2triplets04 | 40 comments It was slower than the first half. I wasn't surprised the aunt knew what was happening. I was surprised that the lady at the of this chapter was after Harper and not David. Liking the story so far.

message 30: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (happy9398) | 13 comments I like that Harper is reacting to this like a normal person would and not immediately giving up her old life for these new powers. I was also really surprise about Saylor! I just thought she was going to be an unimportant side charecter. So far I'm loving this:)

message 31: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (thestarlightshelves) I like the way this is moving. Harper's believably in denial, but she doesn't turn away from David when he needs help.

And Saylor makes a lot of sense. I definitely loved the moment when Harper was leaving the house after saying she wouldn't be a Paladin and Saylor smiles all nice and thanks her for the cake. It's like the southern lady's eff you and it was so hilarious. Definitely loving the humor in this.

Elizabeth (Elzburg) (elzburg) | 5 comments I feel like I'm the only one not really loving this book! I just don't really care for the story or characters that much at this point, I guess. Hopefully I'll like it by the end, tho. As for Sailor being a made... it didn't shock me but I wasn't really thinking about it either.

Emily (booknerdynerd23) | 1 comments did anyone else picture the magnolia house stair case being like one of those stair cases with a balcony and two stair cases on either side

message 34: by Mariana (new)

Mariana | 8 comments I'm liking this book because is realistic (in its own way) I mean, If I were Harper, I'll react exactly the same.. Not like other characters in books that I've read

message 35: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa I really dislike David. I feel like he is such a crybaby. I think it's great that Rachel Hawkins has put Harper in a typically male role and David in a typically female role, however I feel like this book is lacking a strong male protagonist. I think I would be enjoying this book better if there was a second Paladin who maybe was helping or guiding or training Harper.

I really like that Harper refused Saylor and her role as a Paladin. I loved that Harper put herself first and was not willing to die for someone else. Especially someone she has disliked her entire life. I like that I see the evolution of Harper and how she is defending herself more and standing up for herself more. I like that I can see her strength more and more as we progress through the book. However that just makes me see the weakness of David more and more.

One of my favorite parts in this section is when Harper sees her boyfriend Ryan at the mall talking to Mary Beth and she charges over to his side without even thinking. The whole banter back-and-forth between Harper and her best friend Bee, that's secret best friend talk, ending in Harper deciding she's going to go back to the store to buy the sparkly shoes for Cotillion. Loved it!

I am loving Rachel Hawkins writing style and the way she tells her story, it feels very smooth and effortless. A very quick and easy read so far. Though like I stated before I'm really missing a strong male lead.

message 36: by Katrín Rós (new)

Katrín Rós (katrinrosf) | 11 comments I was barely surprised that Harpers 'Professor X' was Saylor. I'd started suspecting it. Although I really do not agree with Harper's decision to turn away from being a Paladin. I feel like she wants to but just doesn't admit it to herself. I hope she changes her mind and embraces her 'destiny' before things go down to Satan.

I agree that nothing is really shocking me so far. Everything has been pretty predictable so far. I do love every little Pres comment though.

You are not the only one not loving this book. I am not in love with it either. It is just on OK read for me thus far.

Edward (ededdneddy) Dude I finished this; oh my god! It was so much fun! I loved it!

message 41: by Judy (new)

Judy Patrick | 10 comments Still lovin' the book. Was pleasantly surprised by Saylor being "Professor X". She seems a lot more awesome now that I know she's not just some stuck up council mom. While I do feel kind of bad for Harper not having a choice in the matter, I want her to get back on board with being a Paladin! She's so kick ass as one and I'm lovin' the David-Harper chemistry. We just need that pesky Ryan out of the way! He'll probably get with Mary-what's-her-face and that'll be David's chance! Muhahaha lol Hope it continues to be awesome! :D

Amanda | 17 comments Derp. Go ahead and ignore that last comment.
But anyway, I love the book so far. I suspected Saylor as Harper's "Professor X", but it was still a little surprising. Also, I think Harper is going to end up a Paladin anyway. Though, as many people have pointed out, her choice was very realistic. After all, no one today would willingly give up their life for anyone, let alone a lifelong rival.
But what I really wanted to mention was Harper's comment about David wearing a Doctor Who T-shirt. I know it's not really an important detail, and it's something to be expected of David, being the nerd he is, but still. Doctor Who T-shirt.
I just love Doctor Who, which is honestly why I got caught up on this little detail :)

Alicia (aliciarinko) | 3 comments Loving this book so far! This is the first book that I'm reading for these monthly read-a-longs and I definitely want to do this every month :)

message 46: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Bermudez Ok so I have mixed feelings about this part of the book.
For some reason the part when Saylor told Harper and David about everything just kind of pissed me off. I hadn't liked Saylor to begin with so having her has Harper's "mentor" or whatever just wasn't right. And also when she was forcing Harper to follow through with the Paladin duties and Harper didn't want to kind of pissed me off to because it wasn't Harper's choice to become a Paladin! It was like forced upon her by a stupid undercover janitor!

Also in the beginning of the book I kind of hated David but now that he and Harper are actually getting along, I love him. <3 He's like so cute and funny like he's just awesome.

The whole interview for the college thing partially surprised me. I knew it would be a fake interview but I didn't know Blythe would actually try to kill Harper rather than David.

Overall I think this book so far is great and I can't wait to continue reading.
