Ariel (arielbissett) How did you feel about Mary Beth and the other Cotillion girls? How did you feel about Harper and Ryan's break up? Did you anticipate Blythe's attack? What do you hope will happen in the next book?

Finally, did you you enjoy the book as a whole? :)

message 2: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 11 comments THIS BOOK DID NOT JUST END NO. Ugh. I liked how they FINALLY broke up. I mean they were not right for each other at all. David and Harper forever. Ok but I was seriously freaked out when all the other girls became Paladins. Like what!? And it was kinda sad when Saylor died but... I wasn't TOO sad. I was kinda annoyed that we have to bring Ryan into this again tho. Ugh. But I loved this book!!!! It was great XD

message 3: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments I know!!! The most messed up situation now that Ryan is a Mage and I predict a weird almost love triangle in the second book except seeing how different this author is maybe Ryan will fall for Mary Beth after all.. Who knows !!! I love David and Harper together.. I love how they didn't have to confess their love for one another --

I was anticipating Blythe but not the death of Saylor - that was definitely unexpected and Ryan being the new Mage -- I wanna know what happens to Bee from here on out.

I am a really slow reader and seeing how it took me only one day to complete this book speaks for itself -- I loved every part of this book and something broke inside me once it ended!!!
it was almost perfect! So far this is the best book of 2014 for me!!! I want the second book right now but seeing as how the title isn't even announced as it just came out I am gonna have to go through major mourning!

message 4: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofiareadsbooks) | 3 comments I really loved it! I hope for no love triangle between Ryan, Harper, and David. David and Harper are great together. I think the next book will be more confusing since Ryan is a Mage and he probably will be reluctant like Harper was. I was anticipating the death of Saylor, but I didn't expect Blythe to bring Bee with her when she left! Overall, I thought it was a really good book, very unique and interesting.

message 5: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 3 comments Was I the only one who predicted the punch potion?

message 6: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments Ariel wrote: "Was I the only one who predicted the punch potion?"

Nope. I saw that coming!! As soon as they mentioned punch again I was anticipating it to have some kinda potion.

message 7: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments Blythe was annoying.. And after she said that she had the power to disappear from places i was yelling for Harper to hit her head with a stapler so that she becomes unconscious. I didnt realize this book was originally supposed to come out in 2012.. and now that i know this is the first book in a series, i cant stop thinking about how long it will be before i can read book 2!!

I think David's character will obviously change because of the spell, but he will learn to control it and become the best oracle :) I cant see Ryan and Harper together again.. that would be awkward!

message 8: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 3 comments I know right! I was so mad when Harper and David didn't do anything to prevent Blythe from casting a spell to get away.

message 9: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments Emily wrote: "She did win a little too easily. They shouldn't have underestimated her because of her size and danger-less looks."

I dont blame them too much cuz they were new to all of this paranormal supernatural world.. so underestimating her was just a mistake they had to make to learn something!

message 10: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 3 comments I feel as if the end was a bit too boring or easy. The author built it up as if it would be this huge event but it just happened, and was done. I didn't even feel upset about anything, nor was I sad about Bee being taken or Saylor dying.

message 11: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments I think the end was a little like that cuz we didn't really get to learn too much about Bee and the death was too quick to feel sad.. :/ I think the build up was good though.. This type of ending is perfect for books that have sequels --- though we don't know when the sequel to rebel belle will come out :(

message 12: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofiareadsbooks) | 3 comments Yeah, the ending came off a bit flat to me compared to the other parts of the book. It added a lot of things but seemed too quick, and not all of my questions were answered.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought the broke up of Harper and Ryan was a little to late, I mean it was pretty obvious that she and David would end up together so it was unnecessary to push the love triangle so much. The ending with Ryan turning out the new mage also was... I don't know, it can make really good funny/awkward scenes on the next book or can make the "love triangle" continuous, and that would be a turn off. Overall was a fluffy read and I can't wait to read the sequel, hope it brings more laughs.

message 14: by Jess (last edited Apr 10, 2014 12:21PM) (new)

Jess (missjessw) | 1 comments I loved the ending... I wish Ryan and Harper had broken up earlier so she had more time being single before getting together with David. That being said, I love David and Harper together <3 Perfection! I was also very surprised by Ryan becoming a Mage. I oddly wasn't sad about Bee being taken, she was a cool character but was kind of bitchy a little too often for me to like her. Hope there is another book, this end battle seemed a little too easily beat for me.

message 15: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (arielbissett) WHAT A FINALE! WHAT A SHOWDOWN! WOAH!

I still don't know if I'm happy about Ryan being turned into the mage.. bah! Why can't he just leave Harper alone, haha? It's going to make for some crazy tension and conflict in the next book!

I loved this book, I can't wait for the liveshow, and for the sequel! :)

message 16: by Tully (new)

Tully (tullysusername) | 4 comments OMGEEEE!!!! THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!
*me chanting* Harvid. Harvid. Harvid. Harvid.

Oh my lord I loved this book! The ending though!! When they held hands!! EEEEEE All I can say is I hope this series will have an ending like Hex Hall That's all I can say! I want an Applebee's ending! I was actually pretty excited when Ryan got turned into the mage and CANNOT WAIT for the next book!!!!

message 17: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofiareadsbooks) | 3 comments Ryan being a Mage is gonna add a lot of tension and confusion. Hopefully, Saylor left some information in him. I just hope there'll be no love triangle.

R4Reader | 25 comments Sofia wrote: "Ryan being a Mage is gonna add a lot of tension and confusion. Hopefully, Saylor left some information in him. I just hope there'll be no love triangle."

Same I am hoping for that too. I actually loved the ending and thought it had a lot of potential so now i leave it all to the second book!

message 19: by Erin (new)

Erin | 2 comments Noooo! I want to read more!! This book was so amazing! I literally just finished it and I feel like I just want to go read it all over again! I thought the ending was really nice though. Not a super cliffhanger that is killing me to read the next book but definitely will have me picking it up when it comes out! Also, David + Harper forever!! :)

Stephanie | 10 comments I don't like the fact that Ryan is a Mage now though..it kinda wierds me out!

message 22: by R4Reader (new)

R4Reader | 25 comments Who else thought Ryan was shady?? I kept thinking he would be one of those douchey boyfriends..

message 23: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | 31 comments Wow! This book was great!
I was quite sad when Saylor died. I was even more annoyed by the fact that Ryan became the new Mage, I hope the story won't turn into some weird love triangle.
Anyway, I think the last few chapters were very interesting, and I really want to find out what happened to Bee.
I can't wait to continue on with this series, does anyone know when the next book comes out?

message 24: by Abby (new)

Abby (LovingTheBookLife) | 6 comments I knew that Harper and David would get together! And then Saylor died?! But I'm confused. Where did Bee go? She disappeared with Blythe and maybe I missed it, but it wasn't clear about where they went.

message 25: by Abby (new)

Abby (LovingTheBookLife) | 6 comments I think I'll give it 4 stars. It was a great read, lots of fun. But I just felt like we didn't get enough. We didn't get enough Harper and David, didn't get enough of Blythe, didn't get enough ending, etc.

message 26: by Adrianne (new)

Adrianne (rennreads) | 6 comments I literally just finished the book and oh my gosh that ending was great. I had a feeling the punch would have some big part in Blythe's big scheme only because she made a comment about how she basically took over that college library back when we first met her. Harper and Ryan's break up was predictable, I mean they'd been drifting apart for a while and were in denial and whatever. It made me happy that Harper realized that though and didn't try and hold onto the relationship...it showed character growth and all that.

Overall I adored this book! Harper showed so much character growth, and that was probably the main reason I loved this book so much. But yeah! I cannot wait to see what happens with the whole Bee/Blythe situation along with the David/Ryan/Harper team...I really want to see whether or not they can work together.

message 27: by Gabriela (last edited Apr 13, 2014 11:57AM) (new)

Gabriela (laserquesting) | 1 comments This book was so fun! I honestly wasn't expecting to like it, but I really did! And I guess I sympathize with Ryan, after all. I mean, don't get me wrong, David and Harper forever, but I think Ryan is a nice guy (not that I ever wanted him to be in the middle of this whole fucked up thing that's going on).

I was really upset with Saylor's death, and I wasn't quite ready to read the words "I was with her when she died", because I just sat there thinking "Oh my God. Ryan's is a mage, Bee is somewhere with Blythe and everything is so messed up right now". I'm really excited to read a second book and I hope to get more information on the Ephors, maybe they could even go to Greece? I don't know. I just loved that the concept of Paladins (not something we see everyday in YA Fiction) was explored in a nice, and yet historical way alongside with lots of humor and this contemporary environment. And I can't stop thinking that this story only worked because the author has such a solid writing style...

message 28: by Christina (new)

Christina (adventuresinpolishland) | 17 comments Well, I did not see that ending coming! I loved the race to the finish, complete with the punch turning everyone against Harper. I was so happy when David and Harper FINALLY went for it, but now things got weird....

Overall, I did really enjoy this book, but I don't think I'd pick up the next one. I'm happy with the way things ended, and would prefer to just leave the last scene as it is.

message 29: by Keely (new)

Keely | 2 comments while reading the ending did any of you guys start to imagine the next book? like all the complicatedness with the whole Ryan thing, but then, what Blythe mentioned about there being something bigger, like is there somehow going to be a huge battle where Harper will end up working with the Ephors?
and for some odd reason the ending was actually perfect even with the major cliffhanger, it was not all that bad.

message 30: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia I really enjoyed this book! At the beginning, it took me like 50 pages to get invested in it, but after that I was engrossed to keep discovering as Harper did about her sudden powers and their relation to David. Ahhhhh David! What can I say about him?! He was my favorite character due to his dorky personality, and the fact that I found it extremely cute that he had a crush on Harper since they were basically toddlers! On the Ryan front, I never expected Saylor to pass her powers to him. I gasped as I was reading that scene because I suddenly saw it unfold and what that entailed for the rest of the series. Overall, I am excited for what is to come from the series! I suspect that at some point there will be another confrontation with Blythe and the Ephors, due to the fact that she insinuated that something big was to come. Let the speculation begin!

message 31: by Lois (new)

Lois | 11 comments This book made me happy - really happy. It was so fun and hilarious and I loved it so freaking much! The plot twist at the end was great - I certainly did not see the whole punch fiasco happening. Plus I am enthused and ecstatic that Harvid finally got together.

This book is so close to being perfect that it pains me to criticise it.

But I was not scared of Blythe! At all! SO MUCH could have been done with this ending - like huge wars or powerful evil people with magical powers or more oracles or anything! The author led me to believe this would be a huge climax, with exciting fighting and death. Instead - we got one teenage girl trying to kill another teenage girl and bewitch a teenage boy. This book was missing a villain.

I thought the hypnosis punch would have led to a huge crowd of innocent people storming towards Harper, trying to kill her. A Divergent-like ending, where no one can be awoken from this blood thirsty trance. But I am feeling quite disappointed.

message 32: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 24 comments First off let me say: "I want more! I want more! I want more!" I want more of this world, more funny, snarky comments, more of Harper and David. I loved every minute of this book and I can't wait for the next one. Now on to the questions! Mary Beth and the other cotillion girls, I thought it was interesting that they were made into Paladins at the end but I was disappointed they had their powers taken right back. I think it would have been interesting to see what would have happened with them in the next book if they were still Paladins. As for Harper and Ryan's break up, I thought it was about time. I do think Ryan and Mary Beth would work out better than him and Harper. I also thought she moved on with David kind of quick, I know they thought they were going to die but still she wasn't even single for like an hour before she ended up in David's arms. Did I anticipate Blythe's attack? Well I knew obviously that she was going to attack but I didn't know how so no, I did not anticipate her strategy. Though I probably should have, after she told Harper and David how she controlled everyone in the library with her brownies I should have expected she would do something like that at the cotillion. After all why bring up the brownie thing if it wasn't a foreshadowing of a later event. In the next book, I just really want to find out what going to happen with Bee (I really hope she doesn't die) and how is this new Harper, Ryan, David relationship going to work out.

message 33: by Britnee (new)

Britnee Marquez | 5 comments Yeah I did not see that ending coming. I have a feeling both Ryan and David are going to change drastically in the next book. Hopefully they get some kind of friendship going on or else things are not going to work. Poor Bee though :(. Freaking Blythe is the worst.

Okay so basically all I have to say about the end of the book is that I did NOT see that plot twist coming and I CANT wait for book two. I'm so excited to see how hilariously awkward these three are going to be together! xD

message 37: by J. (new)

J. (defiantconfusion) Ariel, I was surprised I didn't see the punch potion coming! It should have been obvious!

Saying this book was better than I expected it to be would be a vast understatement. I was expecting something good but not great, but not only was it great, I'm pretty sure it's now on my list of my favorites. I hope the stories I write will have a voice and narrative as witty as Rebel Belle (maybe after a lot of editing, haha).

I don't want there to be another book, though. I mean, I don't want this to be the end, but I really liked the way it wrapped up nicely at the end (except for the Bee/Blythe situation).

Elin Sköld (eliinjohanna) | 10 comments I absolutely loved this book! I feel that it's definitely going to be one of my favorite books this year!

This is why it's sometimes better to wait for a whole series to be out and then marathon them. How do I wait a whole year for the next book? Lol.

It's now 4:24am and I am not going to be able to sleep as I'll now be thinking about this book! I might need to reread hex hall now.

camille 🤍 | 1 comments This book was AMAZING! I didn't expect any of the stuff that happened to happen. I can't wait for the next book! This was such a fun read and I'm really looking forward to what's going to happen next!

I had very mixed feelings about the break up. I honestly really liked Ryan. I thought that he was nice and Harper cared about him so much. BUT the break up needed to happen. I respected that Ryan realized Harper falling for David and he didn't freak out on either of them, but kind of told Harper to go be with David. I thought he handled it very maturely.

David and Harper. Together! So happy about that :D

RYAN THE NEW MAGE!? WHAAAT! I really did not see that coming. This really is going to be awkward… And who is going to train them now that Saylor is dead?! (Something else that totally took me by surprise! I didn't think that her wound was as bad as it turned out to be!).

BOOK #2 PLEASE COME TO ME!!!!!

message 48: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (athousandliveslived) | 7 comments Holy, what a fantastic ending. I never expected that what would happen happened, and again, Rachel Hawkins has created yet another amazing book. WHEN IS THE SEQUEL COMING OUT. I NEED MORE...

This by far was the best book of 2014, right next to Danielle Paige's Dorothy Must Die. It's the perfect contemporary/fantasy romance for everyone out there!

I was glad that Harper and Ryan broke up, and am super-excited to see the romance of Harper and David build up in the sequel.

It's sad to see Saylor, a HUGE character in this book, completely gone. I teared up when she died, but was happy to see someone take her place. (Not going to spoil it)

OMG. Blythe's attack was absolutely unexpected, and her taking Bee also made me go around screaming my head off because I so didn't expect that. WHAAT.

When the Cotillion girls became Paladins, I really couldn't believe it, especially since I'd never expect magic and all that chaos coming into the "real world."

I am absolutely in love with this novel. Thank you to all of the Moderators for creating this amazing group!
