I don't understand people who don't believe in God. Who do they think formed them. If you're an atheist, why don't you believe in God.

Lil (lilmar) | 28 comments My stepfather claimed to be an atheist but isn't it funny that he never could give me a straight answer on how the moon, sun or earth stayed in place?

It's not my place to judge someone who is an atheist, but I will say this, when they stand in front of Him at the end of days and are judged for their lack of faith, they'll believe then.

I have seen His hand in my life too many times to do anything BUT believe that He is there.

Jiaka1981 Winfield | 42 comments Just because your stepfather can't explain how it stays in place doesnt mean other people don't. that would be a lack of education not really proving any point. I consider my self agnostic. I don't know enough information from either side to form an educated and informed decision. I've studied a few religions and the bible raises more questions for me than it answers. I have yet to have someone give me a straight answer about why i should believe the bible when it was written by Men. The chances of that book being altered and mistranslated are huge. I can't put my faith in it. I'm not atheist, but i don't follow and know faith either. If there is a god he will judge and know my heart, if not.. it doesn't matter

Lil (lilmar) | 28 comments Faith is what it all comes down to, IMHO. It took me a long time to learn it, but since I did and am secure in it, my life has been better.

It's not for me to judge anyone on the basis of their faith or lack thereof, so please don't take my comments as judgments, that is not the way they are meant at all.

Rachel | 4 comments I classify myself as agnostic towards the existence of god(s)/goddess(es)/genderless impersonal universal force(s), although I consider myself more atheistic in relation to the Christian God.

I believe that we are formed by evolution, both macro and micro varieties. I’ve seen too much evidence to not believe this. We have now useless organs, such as the appendix. We have a way of standing upright that is almost guaranteed to cause back pain once we reach middle age and above. While I understand the need to search for more links to common ancestors, I think we’ve reached the point where it’s difficult to say there isn’t enough evidence.

I’ll grant that I don’t know how the first life formed, but I’d also like to mention that, from what I can remember of astronomy, there are so many planets in the universe that it is statistically likely for some of them to have life. If this is true, then spontaneous life on Earth, which seems amazing to us, could potentially occur often for planets similar to ours. We’ve explored such a small portion of the universe that it’s impossible to really know.

As far as planets and why they stay in place, as far as I can remember that can be explained through weak gravitational force (as opposed to the strong gravitational force that holds molecules together). Dark matter may play a role with that, and that is one of the big mysteries of space. Just because it isn’t understood well doesn’t mean that God is the only answer.

I agree about the Bible leading to more questions than answers. Many people made it sound like I would instantly see truth in every word, but I didn’t experience that at all. Then they told me that I would only see the truth if I was a believer. I tried to keep an open mind until I heard at a sermon something like this “the Bible is the Word of God and we know the Bible was written by God because the Bible says it was written by God and the Word of God is always True.” Everyone around me was nodding happily and I was shuttering at the horrible circular logic. If I said to someone “I’m cool because I have an IPad and Apple says that people with IPads are cool and my IPad says that Apple never lies” they would laugh at me and point out the flaws in my logic. When it’s religion though, it seems like many people just stop thinking about what’s being said to them, as long as it supports their beliefs. If that’s what faith causes, I’m fine with not having faith.

M.G. Hardie | 10 comments The simple answer is because they believe in Jesus.
Why because it is easier to believe in Jesus because of the human identity.

Nellie Diagonal I don't believe in God because there are more logical explanations for things(not to insult religious people). I just can't make myself believe that a man in the sky used magic to make the Earth-there's too much scientific evidence for evolution, gravity forming the planets, etc. While we may not know everything, we do know enough to prove some things recorded in the Bible are flat-out wrong. However, I have heard of people reading the Bible as they would Roman myths, which makes lots of sense to me. After all, the first chunk of the Old Testament is Jewish mythology. The Bible also contains some beautiful philosophy and literature. All in all, I view the Bible more as a resource for studying culture, leaning philosophy, and reading works of poetry and prose than a factual account.

Frank | 1 comments because it just push the question down the road.

OK, let's assume God created us. How is this a satisfactory answer? I'd immidiately ask: who created God?
