Animal 1: "We must free ourselves from the oppression of those hairless apes!"
Animal 2: "But where would we live?"
Animal 1: "Nature will provide us with every thing we need!"
Animal 2: "I don't know...I like having 6 meals a day..."
Animal 1: "Shut up! Liberty! Freedom!"
Sorry my mind's a bit muddy and this comes up.
To answer the question, I honestly don't know. Some zoos are worse than others.

I myself despise SeaWorld because that franchise actively covered up the harm and pain they cause their specimens. The same evidence of schism and subterfuge is not found in other programs.

Zoos are not needed to save and preserve animals. Nature preserves/sanctuaries where people can't oogle at the animals are better and they can live in peace in places MADE to be just like the ones they were saved/removed from.
Think about it- would you want to be taken from your home and put in a cage "similar" to your home, where another species decides when you eat, teaches you to do tricks and comes in by the the thousands to come stick their ugly faces in your face? Would you want to have someone watching you eat, play, mate, pee and poop all day everyday? I think the answer is NO!

I do think that with all of the de-forestation, poaching and other human encroachment, there does become a greater need for zoos, wildlife sanctuaries and preserves. I think that most zoos do a great job education people about the impact humans have on the environment and what a species endangered status is.
For the most part, I don't think that zoos obtain animals from the wild any more; I think they use breeding systems to increase zoo population.
I would rather see animals in a zoo / sanctuary / preserve than to have a species be extinct.
