YA Addicts Readalong discussion

The readalong will be starting on Saturday 19th April, but if you're keen to get going you can discuss the first 7 chapters in this thread :)

Can i just say that i have already read this amazing book! but i will be going though each chapter and commenting...INFACT IN MY HEAD I JUST REALISED THAT I WANT TO RE READ THE BOOK! IT IS SO GOOD

Has anyone started reading it yet? I've finished chapter 6 and enjoying the plot so far, but the main character Tella is slightly annoying me! What is everyone elses view of her?

I have mixed opinions on her character at the moment - I like her sass and sarcasm, but she also seems pretty spoilt and childish. I hope it's a setup for some great character development, and that she'll mature a lot through the course of the book. Fingers crossed!

If I was a teenage girl obsessed with looking good and took glittery nail varnish with me when running away to a race, I don't think the first thing I'd do would be to hack off all my hair. Just sayin' ;)

Exactly what I thought. I'm actually having difficulty imagining this girl with a short non actor active hair because the way she is.

And not knowing what this all is and what is inside the egg is killing me. If the book keeps being this interesting I will read it in one or two sittings so fingers crossed for a awesome book

just finished this section, im enjoying it so far. Tella is kind of annoying me as well. She goes on & on about her looks then cuts her hair off...strange. I keep reading because I want to know whats in the egg! suppose I may as well carry on with it :) x

Just started it now!! Have no idea what this egg is that you are all mentioning but I'm intrigued!! I'm liking the writing style so far but I agree that I wish Tella would stop talking about her looks! And if their family stopped eating so many preservatives...maybe Cody would get better, haha!

Completely agree with what everyone is saying, and I'm also dying to know what's in the egg but I can't keep my eyes open to read further! :(

Just started it this morning, only 3 chapters in but i'm already into it more than the other books i'm reading :)

I wish we had spent more time getting to know Cody...then I'd feel more like I want to him to be saved!

I agree about the cutting the hair off thing too!! But this book is so addictive! :D

Just finished Part 1, I love Tella's personality, it's so quirky and amusing for a teen despite her difficult situation! Really loving this book, feels like a combination of Pokemon and Hunger Games but written in a teen cool kinda view :D

I didn't find Tella annoying. Maybe a little childish, but we have to remember that she was yanked out of the world she knew and thrust into solitude. Her inner monologue and the silly things she does to have fun seem very realistic to me of a girl who has no one but her parents and a dying brother.

I loved the part on page 31 where we meet this tall guy with blue eyes. The way he regards Tella and they way he helps her. LOVED IT! And then on page 50 when he helps her again. SWOON!

The best part in this section for me was when Tella cuts her hair. I think this makes sense here. Some contestant just pulled her by her long hair and yanked a huge chunk out. Her only option were to chop off her hair or have it always in a bun. But at this point, Tella is clearly not thinking straight. An idea just pops into her head and she just goes with it. She's in the panic mode and doesn't want to be hindered by her hair again, because she almost lost her chance to save her brother. She's doesn't want that to happen again.

Also, the eggs! Seriously? Not at all what I was expecting!

That's a really interesting point about her not thinking clearly and being in panic mode when she cut her hair off. I think it just seemed like such a huge leap in such a short time, because we'd only known her as childish and vain up to that point, so suddenly going for the chop seemed... well, sudden I guess, and a bit out of character. But you're right, I don't know how I'd react in that situation. I don't know if you'd ever get me IN that situation to be honest! That's a big topic for discussion in the liveshow isn't it - would we actually go in there to save someone we loved? Impossible to say maybe, but interesting nonetheless!
