Did You Like the Ending?

Who read it? What did you think? The story was so compelling. I have very mixed feelings about the ending. Would love to hear what others thought?

I really liked this book. Beautifully written, eerie setting, fascinating characters! I'm trying to remember the ending...female protagonist's lover is killed, defending someone? She returns to her parent's home to live out the remainder of her days? I think the lovers were damaged by life and doomed for tragedy. No happy endings here. Such is the stuff of life sometimes...
I read this book in August, 2013 and I liked it a lot. I did leave a review here if you're interested in reading it.
In my review, I said: "While there is a romance between the hero and heroine, this book is not a romance and is actually rather sad...or rather poignant. It does not have the expected HEA. But things do end on a satisfying note for Iris as she eventually gets back to her family and discovers a happy secret. No spoilers here...I don't feel I want to give more details because it is a story that must be read to be appreciated. It's a book that deals with the dark side of the human mind and the horrors of the civil war. Some may have difficulty reading it but I say, give it a chance.
I gave it 4 stars.
