Personally I'm not sure how I feel about smileys, kinda like "can't live with them, can't live without them". Sometimes my posts look too serious without smileys, and I would feel silly when using them. I can't even stand 'lol', but that because in my head it always sounds like 'loy' as in 'Soy'. I'd settle for typing 'el-oh-el' :P

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 67 comments I don't mind them and I use occasionally but I don't know most of them - too many too remember

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) only a very few are necessary, such as when you're putting-someone-down..a 'smiley face' let's them know its-all-in-good-fun

Madge (madge_the_bibliomaniac) | 147 comments I use them, but I'm not comfortable with the "advanced" ones, if that makes sense. The more "standard" emoticons are basically all I use, like :) :D :p ;) :( and sometimes XD or :'( There are tons out there that I have to google when someone uses them, because I have no idea what they are. I think they're helpful in establishing the mood of a post that might be mistaken as more serious than it is, or showing when someone is joking.

Indiabookstore | 38 comments I think they're good for dimplomacy and tact. It smoothens human communication. On the other hand, they can be irritatingly fake.
