A. INTRODUCTION

Inspired by the rhyme We’re Going on a Bear Hunt since our family has listened to this on audio for a million times in the past year so I figure my bookish family can go on a Book Hunt!

We're going on a BOOK hunt!
We're gonna FIND a GOOD one!
What a Beautiful Day
We're not scared

Uh-Oh...

description

This challenge will run from 1 January – 31 December 2016 inclusive.
There are two (2) parts to this challenge: The Hunt (see B below) and The Chain (see C below).

B. The Hunt
1. There will be 3 Clues posted on the first day of the month (January to November only)

2. Clues are valid throughout the challenge period

3. Participants hunt for books as per Clues and post them on relevant thread/s

4. 1 point will be awarded for each book listed that fits a Clue

5. Book may be listed more than once under different months or clues by anybody (points will be awarded "first in, first served")

6. Listed books will be added to Book Hunt (PAS). This profile has been set as public profile so users don't have to 'add as friends' to view books etc.

Group's bookshelf / listopia just don't have sufficient functionality to ease the search for creating Chain. This profile is set specifically for the challenge and you can sort by title / author, compare books to see which are already on your tbr, etc

7. There will be themed hunting expeditions
a. These expeditions will be announced at random
b. You may earn bonus points if successful in your hunting expedition in the specified time period
c. Book/s read do not have be ‘listed books’
d. When reporting, please link to your book edition and page / location of listed items

C. The Chain
1. Participants read any listed books and depending on preferred participation level (see below) to create a (book)Chain

2. Chain can be made by reading books with:

a. Title Option: identical initial letter of word in title/subtitle (excluding A, An, The)
For Example;
The Poisonwood Bible
The Water Babies
The Vicar of Wakefield
Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek
...

b. Author Option: identical initial letter of author's name (to alternate between first and last)
For example;
The Unremembered by Peter Orullian
Wild Wood by Posie Graeme-Evans
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Room by Emma Donoghue
...

3. Participation Levels

a. LOW ~NO Book-Chain:
2 pts for each book read that are listed*

b. MODERATE ~Book-Chain allows Non-listed books:
1 pt for each book read that are NOT listed BUT part of your Book-Chain
2 pts for each book read that are listed*
25 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consist of 6-12 books
50 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consist of 13-24 books
75 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consists of 25-36 books
100 s for each Book-Chain completed that consists of more than 36 books

c. EXTREME ~Book-Chain made up of ONLY listed books:
2 pts for each book read that are listed*
50 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consist of 6-12 books
100 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consist of 13-24 books
150 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consists of 25-36 books
200 pts for each Book-Chain completed that consists of more than 36 books

*To claim 'listed book' points, book must already be on the list at time of you've finished reading it.

4. You can create more than 1 Book-Chain at a time and at different levels. That is, you can do:
1 or more Moderate Level Book-Chain/s
1 or more Extreme Level Book-Chain/s
you can even do a Low Level reading
BUT a read book can only be claimed ONCE

Note that you will need to be very clear on which band you're reporting on. I'd suggest 'naming' your Book-Chain in your planning thread so I know what I'm looking at when I check out your thread

5. Plan ahead as much as you like as books do NOT have to be read in order but Chain must be very clear when claiming completion points.

D. Housekeeping

1. There is NO page limitation but points apply if you read:
101-200p book: 1 pt
201-300p book: 2 pts
301-400p book: 3 pts
...
901-1,000p book: 9 pts
1,001++p book: 10 pts
We will look at most popular edition of the printed work to determine number of pages

If book only available digitally, we will use a rule of thumb of 80,000 words being a 300p book (ie. use this to calculate the proportional of number pages for the total number of words)

2. A summary of points to be collected:
a. 1 point per book you listed according to Clue
b. 1 point for each book read that are NOT listed BUT part of your Chain
c. 2 points for each book read that are listed
d. Number of Pages per books read as noted on 1 above
e. Chain completion points as per C.3 (above)
f. Any bonus points earned by Theme Hunting Expedition (B.7)

3. Reporting Thread will be open around 20th of month for 7 days.
Please report ALL books you've finished reading for this challenge in the past month... whether or not they are part of a Chain. Do NOT report completed Book-Chain on this thread.

4. There will be a separate Reporting Thread for your Book-Chain. This is strictly to claim on your completion bonus ONLY

E. FAQ

Q: What if I found a book in July that fits a January Clue?
A: You can still list book in the January thread and earn a point as there is no expiry date to Clues

Q: Why is there no Clue in December?
A: December is reserved to complete Chain/s

Q: What kinds of Clues can we expect?
A: Most Clues will be based on the rhyme (7 sets) and then we will have 4 sets from Readers Pursuits first finishers of rounds (LynnB, Amy, Coralie, TBA). Clues can be of anything: things on cover, words in title, certain names of authors, certain things in plot, etc

Q: How can we plan ahead when Clues are only announced on monthly basis?
A: It will be very limited planning to begin with but the essence of this ‘planning ahead’ is that your books in your Chain do not have to be read in order of the Chain. If you are on Moderate Level (reading books both listed & non-listed), you can read books out of order at your own pace.

Q: So if I read a non-listed book in January and was unable to fit in into a Chain then but it is now listed in June, can I do that?
A: Unfortunately, no. Firstly, to claim points for listed books read, the book must first be listed prior to being read. Secondly, due to the reporting procedure, it will be too confusing to backtrack throughout the year.

Q: If I read a non-listed book in February and it was claimed as part of my Moderate Chain but it is a listed book for July, can I claim additional points? Can I also move it to a different Chain?
A: You can NOT claim additional points for book which was read a non-listed (due to reporting procedure) but you may still move the claimed book/s between and/or within your Chains.

Happy Christmas, everyone ;)

We will start this Friday, 1 January 2016 so I thought I'd post now to give you time to absorb rules & ask questions in between break for the busy Season

@LynnB, Amy, & Coralie: I will PM all of you in the new year to organise your month; don't worry about it now as you'll get a better idea when we start playing :)

message 7: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments So is each chain length determined by how many books you read in that month? Or how do we know when a chain is finished or not? And I'm confused on how we can have more than 1 chain going at a time.

message 8: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments A very creative game idea btw.

The Chain is ongoing, Lahni. You can make it as long as you wish... I don't think it's likely that any of us is going to make a Chain of 36+ books within 1 month lol. A Chain is completed when you can't fit anything else on or as you deemed fit... as you see, the highest bonus points is for 36+ books, so theoretically you can redeem this bonus points with 37 books and start a new Chain :)

I'm guessing that you won't always be able to fit books you've read into 1 Chain so therefore, you're allowed to have more than 1 Chain going on to fit in as many books as you can.

So, a chain can continue from month to month? or is limited to one month - thus, possibly 12+ chains during the year?

Oooh, good question!

There is no restriction though I doubt all of one author's works will be listed so if you're on Moderate level, this will work.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments I'm in too. I'll start off with the hunt option because it's going to take me time to work out the chain option in my head :0)

message 25: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenofthebookworm) Do non-listed books have to be books that tie in with the clues but just haven't been listed or can they just be any books that would fit the chain?

message 26: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
It can be any books, Karen. Though at times it might be one that didn't fit any earlier clues but will fit future clues. That's just something that you'd not know... going that makes sense...

Tien, I have noticed that (for some of the clue #1 books) there are covers which qualify and those that do not. If the book is listed but the cover (thinking of library books) does not show something growing, does it still count for our chains as a listed book? Example The Cider House Rules and The Cider House Rules.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
OK, so -- I agree with others, I think I am going to have to think about this one quite a bit. I might do the chain part just for fun, not for points as I know I have no hope of being anywhere near the top of the points board. It will be fun, though, to see how many points I can get, though.

SO -- question number 1 - if Poisonwood Bible is on January's shelf and I read it later in the year, I can still count it, right?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Another question - there is a tree called an ASH. If the book title has the word ash or ashes, but refers to a fire, not a plant, is it still useable?

Bea, as long as the book is listed (it doesn't matter under which clue), it's counted

Yes, it doesn't matter WHEN in the year you read the book... you can read the books in your chain out of order (hence the 'planning ahead' bit in Part C. 5

"Another question - there is a tree called an ASH. If the book title has the word ash or ashes, but refers to a fire, not a plant, is it still useable? "

I have another question.

What if we list a book here for one of the clues, but finish reading it before it gets added to the list. Can we still count it as a "listed" book?

Under C.3

*To claim 'listed book' points, book must already be on the list at time of you've finished reading it.

Sorry, I think I was not clear in my question. I am reading a book right now, Damaged which has trees on the cover. I listed it as a book for January clue #1 in the January thread post number 48, but no one has updated the list yet. I'm trying to decide whether to put it aside before I finish it until the lists for January are updated, or whether the fact that it is in the thread already is sufficient.

I take it from your post that if I finish it before either Susan or Bea updates the list I can't count it. Even though it has been in the thread for over a day.

It's all right if you've 'listed' it on the thread... as long as we've 'got' it, it's fine.

Karin I'm confused. If I want to count a grass book that I read for the chain, I need to list it with the cover on the other thread with the hunting clue?

And I have started a chain. Do I post it now and add to it, or do I wait and put it all in when I'm done?

You can use both listed and non-listed books for chains however you get 2 points for reading listed and 1 for non-listed. To claim listed books read, the books will already have been listed by the time youve finished reading. To list a book, post it in the clue thread.

You can create your own thread to keep track of your chains. There will be a specific reporting thread for finished chains. I didnt think anyone would have finished a chain yet at this early stage...

Is that clear as mud ;p

Great, I'll start my chain thread now, and will skip the listed books, then, since I didn't put them down before I read them. I'll work on listed books next month instead.

Karin, you can include books that are currently listed in your chain, but, if you read them prior to the date they were listed, you would only get 1 point for them not 2.

Karin Bea wrote: "Karin, you can include books that are currently listed in your chain, but, if you read them prior to the date they were listed, you would only get 1 point for them not 2."

Yes, thanks, I understand that part. I am going to try to include as many 2016 reads I do as I can in one or more chains (with one word titles, I'm guessing 2 chains since those will work better in an author one.

How about rereads? For eg, I put Snow Falling on Cedars down because I'm going to reread it for a couple of other challenges, but since it's one of my favourite novels, I've read it before. But I haven't reread it nor added it. So far my chain isn't anywhere online yet, but I'm going to put a working model on a thread here at some point.

Before we officially post chains, we can move titles around as we go until we're done, correct?

Excellent :). I'm going to print my list of books read so far and get to work on a hard copy then start working on my thread here. I like this sort of challenge since it can work with what I'm already reading but still takes some thought to work it out.

Karin wrote: "So, I made a HUGE mistake. I didn't understand reporting rules, confusing the chains with the other books. Does this mean my January books are not allowed to be in the chains?"

There are 2 different reporting threads:

ONE to claim points for books you've read that are in your Chains. This one will be a monthly reporting thread (open only for a week at a time)
For this thread, report all books you've read to date that you have fitted into your Chains (that you haven't claim points for). So at the end of next week, there will be a February reporting thread where you can claim any books you've read from 1 January to date that are in your Chains.

The SECOND one is a reporting thread for your completed Chains. This thread will be an open-ended one when I get it up (I haven't open it since I doubt anyone will have finished a Chain this early though I create it soon). This thread is to claim your bonus points in finished/completed Chains (all books being read).

Does that clear it up for you?

Yes. I saw one from January that closed, so thought it was too late, but it's not. I am so happy to learn this.

Also, it turns out that the next book I was reading for clue #1 for River had more than 10 food items, so I posted that there just now. Am I correct in understanding that I can collect both the extra point for listing it and points for finding the 10 food items? Plus the chain points?
