Shyanne (foxtarts) Hello there! Lately I've been trying to find fantasy novels but most of the popular fantasy novels do not seem to appeal to me. So I will list some of the novels I do like to see if someone can help me recommend to me a few fantasy series/novels?

Well World Saga by Jack Chalker
Gaea Trilogy by John Varley
Discworld series by Terry Pratchet
Redwall series Brian Jacques
Sholan Alliance series by Lisanne Norman

Basically Im wanting a fantasy novel that either features mythical creatures or maybe the main character isn't a human at all? I haven't read the Xanth novels but I want to. I would love a fantasy series where the main hereo is a mythical creature instead of a human and like he meets humans and has a hard time understanding them? That'd be great. Thank you all in advance for your help.

Betelgeuze | 30 comments Here are some non-mainstream fantasy books you might like:

Night's Master (Flat Earth, #1) by Tanith Lee The main character isn't human. The other books in the series also have non-human main characters. Very unusual world.

Black Sun Rising (The Coldfire Trilogy, #1) by C.S. Friedman Very well written fantasy with an anti-hero who's no longer human.

Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels #1) by Anne Bishop Fantasy series with a matriarchal society gone bad. Both dark and funny with a unique magic system.

Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams Fantasy story with a cat as the main character.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 53 comments You might like to give this series a go, Ryan: Few Are Chosen, the first book, is free, so nothing to lose by giving it a try.

The Cloud Roads starts an awesome trilogy that has no people.

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments Not written from the POV of an animal, but it IS animal- centric..
Try Ariel.

I also like The Familiars series (though it is a bit YA, still a fun read.)

Or The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon

Comics-wise, I like both Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 and The Mice Templar, Vol. 1: The Prophecy

Also a bit more retro, and kids-based, but still a fun read, I'm enjoying my re-read of the Freddy Goes to Florida series.

Or you can friend me and check out my "ANimal-Based Fantasy" and other shelves.

Bruce Nordstrom I'm more of a classic fantasy reader. Anything from back to 1920 or so.

Highest recommendation: And thing by Lord Dunsany but especially his short stories: (sometimes hard to locate. You should try Amazon first.) The Book of Wonder or Fifty-One Tales.

Or some great ole S&s: The Goblin Tower The Dying Earth.

Hope you enjoy these.

Martha (tilla) | 194 comments How about the Age of Fire series by E.E. Knight? Or the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik?

Marc (authorguy) | 393 comments Not sure what the condition means about "the main hero is a mythical creature instead of a human and like he meets humans and has a hard time understanding them". Unless the author of the book is one of these creatures, it's going to be written from the perspective of a human trying to imagine the perspective of a non-human. That said some of the Shadowrun series, in which magic comes back to the world and starts changing people, have people who were human becoming other than human.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Keep checking back. I'm sure something will come along you like, eventually.

Hmmmm....just remembering
Dun Lady's Jess by Doranna Durgin.

Xanth (ugh spell check only seems to work when you don't need/want it) was always a favorite of mine, but I liked the first three books best. Ogre, Ogre was good and more about non human characters...kinda. To get a reference of the world you still might want to begin at the beginning.
: )

Caitlin Francis So the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques are ones you have already read??

The Brides of Rollrock Island

So this kinda has a protagonist who maybe isn't entirely human...I don't want to give away spoilers, but it's beautifully written and really interesting.

Robin Hobb The Liveship Traders Trilogy 3 Books Collection Set

Not told entirely from the POV of mythical creatures/non humans but does feature dragons and other entities that are not human.

Joseph | 1651 comments Some older ones that I've always liked, and try to push on people at every opportunity:

The Shattered World by Michael Reaves

The Mask of the Sorcerer by Darrell Schweitzer

The Man of Gold by M.A.R. Barker

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Blurb from Dunn Lady's Jess.

When hikers Dayna and Eric find a young woman naked, terrified, and speechless, they're sure she's the victim of foul play. But the truth is much more shocking: she isn't human at all. She's Dun Lady's Jess, a horse transformed into this new shape by the spell that brought her and her rider, to whom she is utterly devoted, into this world.
