B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Getting around Goodreads can be daunting at first. This is the the link to the help page on Goodreads. http://www.goodreads.com/help

Here are some tips:

CHANGING FONT AND STYLE
Making text bold, italics, underline or strikethrough is easy.
I'm bold is I'm bold
I'm italics is I'm italics
I'm underlined is I'm underlined
And I'm strikethrough is And I'm strikethrough

ADDING AN AUTHOR OR BOOK LINK TO YOUR COMMENTS
To add a link to an author or book title or display a book cover in your comments, click on "add book/author" which is located just above the box you write your comments in. Once it's open you will see at the bottom you can choose "cover" instead of title if you prefer to display a picture of the book. Adding links instead of just typing the title will link this topic to the book's home page and increases the profile of the book and our group.

HOW TO ADD PHOTOS TO YOUR COMMENTS
Another popular question is how do I add photos to my posts. Google "photobucket" (there are many other sources but that's a good place to start). Select the photo you want and to the left you'll see a box that has the "html" text that will allow that photo to appear on other sites. Copy the text and paste it into your post. Preview your post and you will see that the picture appears, not the text.

WHY DO SOME COMMENTS BEGIN WITH PREVIOUS MESSAGES IN ITALICS?
If you want to respond to a particular message so it's clear that is what you're talking about then just click the word 'reply' at the bottom right of their message.

HOW TO CROSS OUT YOUR BOOK WHEN FINISHED
put title in here

ANOTHER WAY TO ADD AN IMAGE TO YOUR POST
In Firefox and Chrome, right click on the image you want to share, then click on 'copy image location'.

Then [image error]

In Internet Explorer, right click-properties and copy image url. Then do the above.

HOW TO PUT ♥, ★ AND ☆ IN YOUR TEXT
For a heart type this: &,hearts;
For a full star type this: &,#,9733;
For a blank star type this: &,#,9734;
(take out the commas)

HOW TO USE THE WORK-AROUND FOR RE-READS, UNTIL IT'S A FEATURE

Edit your book review, hit "advanced" and there's a field there for "number of times read". Keep track of your re-reads that way:) (Thanks Liam!)

HELPFUL LINKS
Feel free to ask the moderators any questions but you can also also ask the experts at the Goodreads Feedback group http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1... or the Goodreads Librarians grouphttp://www.goodreads.com/group/show/2... .. Individual requests for help can be sent via the help page.

HOW TO FIND YOUR NEW RELEASES PAGE

Go to your profile, then Emails tab. Toward the bottom is a list of "Newsletters and Other Mail" you can receive from GR. The 4th item is the "New Releases" email, and next to that is a "preview" link. Click on it.

Or just use this link: http://www.goodreads.com/new_releases...

TIP: For those wanting to save all their books/reviews you can export to a .CSV file.

Go to "My Books". On the left side is a list of links. Click on "import/export". On the new page, upper right, is the link to export to a .CSV file.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Thank you Bette, that's a great thread to have! As for italics, strike, underline, add link, photo & co, maybe it's handy to know that you can see the way to format when clicking on the (some html is ok) above the comment box on the right hand side.

I wasn't sure whether to post this thread or not since most people seem to know their way around. But it may come in handy for new members to AAB/GR.

I'm pleased for that. It certainly helped me when I was first learning my way around 'how to do things'.

I nicked it from my Aussie Readers group:P

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Some great tips here, Bette! Thanks for starting this thread :)

I can't remember where but someone asked how to reduce photo sizes. Not the image itself, for when you are post within a thread. That's a question of fiddling with the dimensions in the html code.

But if all you want to do is include the whole of your face, or centre yourself a bit better in your profile picture, then do it on your computer before you upload it to Goodreads. My profile pic is cropped from a much larger distance photo, for example. I used Microsoft Paint.

message 12: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) btw ya'll to do a heart it is the left lesser than sign and the number 3. <3

message 13: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) &hearts, ★, ☆

Just trying out the signs :)

Amber, not sure what you mean?

message 14: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) You know the two keys at the bottom row of the keyboard after the letter M key, the comma and period keys. There are arrow signs above them. The one on the comma u use shift on the comma key and it's one of the arrow keys then the number 3 key and that's a heart.

<3

message 15: by Alice (last edited May 10, 2014 02:39PM) (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Yeah, I tried that, but the heart shape doesn't show?

You mean this >3 stands for the heart?

message 16: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) You must've hit the period key instead of the comma key when you did it then. because when you do it you hold down shift then the comma key and then the number 3.

<3

message 17: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) <3

This is the heart?

But I want the heart-shaped heart. The tip in this thread didn't work either - &hearts

message 18: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Yeah it is. :)

message 19: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I think it only works on a pc or laptop, certainly not on a kindle :(

message 20: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'm using a laptop (Samsung)!

message 21: by Bionic Jean (new)

Do you know, this had occurred to me, but I didn't bother trying it out because my so-logical brain saw that both the others also had a ; but just as separators! I should have followed Sherlock Holmes's method...! :D

That was me, Jean. Yes, I finally reduced via Photo Gallery. That was after I tried for ages to do it on GR and said a lot of bad words:P

message 38: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Talking about GIFs on another thread reminded me of a question I have:

Some people use little ticks (or checks, if you are American - those little signs the teacher might put in your book if you got your sums right. And if you got them wrong we all know your teacher would put little kisses...) Can anyone tell me the html code to do this please?

message 39: by Jenny (last edited May 30, 2014 10:03AM) (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I am one of those people I believe, and I do it in an incredibly sophisticated and technologically advanced way. *Drum roll* I copy from here ;)

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I assume it would be like with any other image link: go to (some html is ok) copy the template for image and replace http://www.goodreads.com/image...with the link to your image (you might want to also adjust height and width)

Bette, I just found this thread and I think it's great! My question is, how do you indicate a reply to something that is further down in the text of the post, not the first few words? I've seen people do this and have not been able to duplicate it.

I usually copy/paste the part of text I want to quote.
