This folder is for books that either take place in Antarctica, or are written by an author from Antarctica (good luck, haha).

Please share your suggestions, or any resources you've used to help find your book for this category in this thread.

Amanda | 229 comments I am going to read "Where'd you go Bernadette" by Maria Semple because I have the book and didn't get it read this year. But I may end up reading "Chasing the Light" by Jesse Blackadder because it looks good too.
Other suggestions:
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Extraordinary Voyages #6)
The Final Warning by James Patterson
An Unsung Hero: Tom Crean - Antarctic Survivor by Michael Smith

Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple is a fun one! I loved her good humored poke at some Seattleites, too.

message 13: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie (amsjob) This one has been on my shelve for a long time. Now is the time to read it! An Unsung Hero: Tom Crean - Antarctic Survivor by Michael Smith

message 14: by Katie (new)

Katie Kenig (katydid) | 7 comments I'm going for Subterranean. A little more to my kind of book :) It looks like a fun one, just requested it from the library.

message 15: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 7 comments Troubling a Star by Madeleine L'Engle was a good young adult read for me over a decade ago

message 16: by Clair (new)

Clair (obstinatepursuit) | 5 comments I'll be reading In Shackleton's Footsteps: A Return to the Heart of the Antarctic. I bought it for my dad sometime in 2015 and it looked so interesting!

Thanks for the suggestion! Just started it, it's my first H.P. Lovecraft and I really like it so far. The narrator of the novel mentions another book set partly in Antarctica, maybe somebody likes to check it out:

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe

Teresa (teremazon) I have chosen The Nature of Iceby Robyn Mundy. The premise is very intriguing, and the cover is lovely.

The Nature of Ice by Robyn Mundy

Shirley I really enjoyed Dark Matter last year, a ghost story set in Antarctica. I'm interested in Skating to Antarctica, The Still Point and Where'd You Go, Bernadette

message 20: by D (new)

D | 9 comments I also plan on reading "Where'd you go Bernadette".

message 21: by Frogli (new)

Frogli | 118 comments Uhm yeah don't read Dark Matter for this category (like I did) as it's set in the Arctic not Antarctica! Otherwise, go for it especially if you like ghost stories, I really enjoyed it.

I think I'll put it under 'author you've never read before'...

message 22: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Hillring (dakkster) I might read the comic book version of the old John Carpenter movie The Thing. Or I'll just switch this category out for one of the ones I liked but didn't get voted on to this list. Considering the same thing for Africa.

J. Gowin I ran across a curious discovery that might provide a bit of a cheat. Photos from Shackleton's ill fated expedition have recently been digitized. Among them was a photograph of Shackleton's private library aboard ship. And they have been able to make out the titles.

Mary Sue Like many others, I chose Where'd You Go, Bernadette for this task. Maybe I was expecting too much because of all the hype it has received, but for me it was just "OK".

I read Bernadette a few years ago and I had the same feeling. Just OK. And yes, I also think the hype made me expect alot more.

Sarah Mary Sue wrote: "Like many others, I chose Where'd You Go, Bernadette for this task. Maybe I was expecting too much because of all the hype it has received, but for me it was just "OK"."

I'm reading this for a different category... It has received a lot of hype but I'm only 40 pages in. So far it definitely feels like an "OK" kind of book to me too.

message 29: by Xandy (new)

Xandy (xandypp) I listened to Where'd You Go Bernadette as an audiobook and loved it! I definitely wouldn't have picked up this book without the reading challenge and I'm so glad I did. I definitely recommend the audiobook for those who may be on the fence about this book. It was a fun one for my daily commute to work.
