This folder is for books that either take place in North America, or are written by a North American author. It's up to you!

Please share your suggestions, or any resources you've used to help find your book for this category in this thread.

Amanda | 229 comments I am reading "Astoria" by Peter Stark because it was one I wanted to read this year but didn't, so I suggested it for our book club selection for 2016. Nothing speaks "North America" like reading about the parties that set out to settle the wild western coast in the early 1800's.
Other Suggestions:
The Diviners by Margaret Laurence
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
Beloved by Toni Morrison
All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus
Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

Teresa Kander I've chosen to read The 5th Wave

Sam F | 29 comments So many to choose from here - I'm trying not to overlap with other categories. I'm thinking of :

Mrs. Mike - based in Canada
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America - based in Chicago, US
The Circle - based in California

Margo (dandylines) A Walk Across America
There is also a companion piece called The Walk West.
Perhaps a bit outdated but lovely to read.

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) I'm going with either The 5th Wave, since I'll be reading it anyway for another group and before the movie comes out, or "City of Fallen Angels" by Cassandra Clare.

Catherine | 1 comments Yesterday I decided to read "The Day the World Came to Town, 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland" by Jim deFede and I have finished already. I couldn't put this book down and would highly recommend it! What an amazing story under such sad circumstances.

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan Godwin | 1 comments I decided to read "House of the Rising Sun" by James Lee Burke. It's a tale of love, loss, betrayal, vengeance and retribution that follows Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland on his journey to reunite with his estranged son, Ishmael, a captain in the United States Army. This is the latest book by James Lee Burke. I have enjoyed all his books! I know I won't be disappointed!

Valerie | 9 comments I'm either going to read "Soul Catcher", "The Whiskey Rebels", or "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". For each continent, I want to read a book that captures some element of its setting. I'm picking books that are heavy with descriptions and grounded in the country's culture.

message 11: by Kristin (new)

Kristin I am currently reading "The Secret Garden." So far it is interesting and I like it.

Kristina I'm going to read East of Eden by John Steinbeck for this category.

Midnight is good. Quirk but good.

I don't really have one favorite book, but East of Eden probably comes the closest. It has everything in it!! I have reread it several times.

message 15: by Mary Sue (new)

Mary Sue I read Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain for another challenge I am doing and it works for this task. Interesting read!
