The Innocent: A Myth by Candice Raquel Lee

Genres: NA Romance, Paranormal, Literary Fiction

Description:
"I was eaten, plain and simple. It felt like being burned alive, like every cell in my body was exploding. Then everything stopped—my breathing, my pain, my heart. . ."

The Innocent is a breathtaking novel about the often treacherous, sometimes exhilarating, and every now and again funny path that leads to true love.

Alexa Wyndham is a painfully sheltered girl from Brooklyn with a mysterious past. She is an innocent in every sense of the word, her views of the world formed through the lens of the poetry and literary novels she reads. Now on her own in college in Manhattan she finds the big bad city is just waiting to devour her. When she goes out with friends on Valentine’s Day, a stunning kiss from a stranger is her introduction to this new and dangerous world. Her would be lover is after her flesh. It contains a most powerful transformative energy, and the supernatural creatures of the city are willing to do anything for a taste of it.

Her only hope of survival is eight-hundred-year-old, Cristien LaRoche. An incubus who has killed every woman he has been with. He will be damned if helps Alexa and damned if he doesn’t. Even if he can save her once, or save her a hundred times from those who seek her power, he still won’t be able to protect her from his own deadly embrace.

Inspired by the myth of Cupid and Psyche, and the novel Jane Eyre, The Innocent will follow the harrowing path of Alexa and Cristien as they trade quips and quotes, chase and lose love, forgive and do the unforgivable, betray and are betrayed, until finally one will come face to face with the white light and the other his darkest nightmare. Together, Alexa and Cristien will have to answer the question, “Is Love stronger than Death?”

Funny thing. The second email bounced back too. I tried to private message you, but Goodreads says that you can't accept private messages. So, you can private message me with your address. I think that will be easiest.

Candice Lee Hi, I just wanted to say a few words since it seems some of my readers are getting a bit confused, so I will try and clarify. "The Innocent" is a literary novel. When I wrote that it was "lyrical and poetic" or when I called it "a myth" I thought that that would cover it, but it seems I was mistaken. Sorry. The book is based on the myth of Cupid and Psyche and is written like a myth full of subtle hints about life. It also contains literary references for those who love classic literature and poetry about love.

I put "The Innocent" in the YA category (just like A.S. Byatt called her great novel "Possession" a Romance)because it is very much like a YA novel. It has a young female protagonist and a supernatural lover but these characters also exist in more ancient myths too. "The Innocent" is meant to be read as literature though, or as a metaphysical or mythological novel. If "The Innocent" is not read in this vein it losses all its meaning and depth and may seem confusing to some. This is unfortunate, but I hope this explains things a little.

Thank you all for your consideration and time,

Candice Raquel Lee

Thanks Khulhet! Sorry for the late reply. I've been away on a month long trip to Barcelona and Sicily! I just got back. I am glad that you were interested enough to look up the myths of Cupid and Psyche and find out who Lilith was. My husband is part Filipino, and he has shared with me some of the stories his grandmother told him about the Kapri. I really enjoyed them.

Diana (dianahhernandez) | 52 comments I loved this book. I really liked that christien and alexa knew what they wanted and they weren't afraid to go for it. Most books push the other away in the beginning because they believe it is what's best for them. But in The Innocent they knew they were better a nd stronger together. I have to say it was one of the best I have read in a long time. Great job Candice Raquel Lee. Absolutely amazing story.
