Waiting for Godot
question
Should plays and short stories count as books that you read this year?
Well, to say that it is somehow "cheap" because of their length presupposes that filling up one's Read shelf is the ultimate goal on Goodreads, and that those who can add more books faster (those who read plays, or short stories, or comic books, that is) have a supposed unfair advantage over the other readers.
I think that to focus on what counts to be added in our list distracts us from the awesomeness of this social media network, which is reading and writing and talking about those.
So what if someone has too many plays and short stories? Good for them and good for me too because I have someone to ask for good short story recommendations :D
After all, what Kat said was right: if it counts for you, it should count for GR.

So how many pages does it take to make a book? What is a book? Almost a philosophical question. The counts are irrelevant for some, and an incentive to read at all for others. Wherever someone finds oneself is fine. Just read and enjoy the experience.
I'd say a short story or play counts, especially if you worked on it, maybe even had to write a paper on it. Such cases aren't so cheap any longer.
I would count it, if it's a collection of short stories and I've read at least half of the stories.
I was having this debate with myself as well. I don't consider it cheap, I have been adding the short stories because I use Goodreads as a reference to all I have read. I love this website so much aha xo
I don't see why they wouldn't?
For me, the whole point of adding books I've read to goodreads is to have a record of what I've read, so that I don't forget and can revisit it and see what I was into during a particular year and how my reading volume compared to other years. In that sense, counting the short stuff like a play or comic is even more important, as they are the most likely to be forgotten.
And by the way, people concerned about what "counts" may find their concerns completely nullified by the fact that you can simply ignore the number of titles and look at number of pages read instead, that stat is easily available on everyone's profile page, so it's not like you can ACTUALLY fool or be fooled by anyone about how much reading was done that year. For instance, I see that 2016 was Cynda's best year for number of books at 162, but she actually read significantly more pages in 2015.

If you've read it and it has made an impact on you, it counts.
This year I have made a committment to self to read 10 plays. I have read several standalone plays, meaning not from a collection or anthology. I thought it might be some kind of cheating by doing this, and then I laughed at my thinking that. Afterall, it is my Goodreads account which I use to further my own reading goals. My accojnt and my own account is all I need tomtake into account ☺
Plays are still important to the world of literature. Why not count them?
Everything counts. If its got pages and you read them its a book. Now is listening to an audio-book reading?
I count a short story as a "book" if there is other consideration for it. Like the above person writing a paper about it. Or an associated article or podcast analyzing it. I also count short children's books and photo books as a book. Hour-long Big Finish audioplays and a single normal comic book are counted as a "book" as well: anything read/etc that was considered separately.
However, in my book log, I have something for length. Short stories like this, or anything audio an hour or less, get a length of 1. Novella length is 2, and any longer book is given a length rating of 3 or longer.
One example of a separately-considered short story that I considered as a "book" was "The Festival" by Lovecraft. I read it, followed by listening to a podcast that analyzed it. I am sure I would count "Waiting for Godot", as I am guessing I would easily find a podcast or article to read with it that discusses it.
So, if I want to consider "how many books did you read in a year?" I can then look at just those of novella-length or longer. Or use novel-length as a minimum.
(More on short stories: if I read a collection of short stories, and run through them one right after another, with no separate consideration of each story, I don't count them separately.)

I would say if the work is published and available as "stand alone" then it counts as a book. Therefore, most plays and many novellas will count as a book, but short stories in a short story collection would not. Of course, this is just how I look at it. Your mileage might vary!
I usually don't count short stories or plays. I also read graphic novels/manga occasionally, but I don't count those either unless they're very long or I read a whole series. I did count Shakespeare last year because my edition made it look longer than it really was, but this year I don't think I'll do that. However, most of my friends do count these things, so maybe I'm just being too strict with myself.
I like to read a little bit of everything. So where does one draw the line at listing a work as having read it? Where ever one wants to draw the line. I think having a goal to read X number of books in a year is an okay goal, but a better goal would be to, say, read one great book a month. Problem is, how do you know you love a book till you've read it?
