Nikita There are a few things that made me think of this book but just from the trailer only I can't say for 100% sure that they copied this book.

message 3: by Chris (new)

Chris It looks like it could be the other way around. The script for the movie has been around since 2007. Across the Universe was published in 2011.

Michelle Gourley Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be.

Nikita From the trailer both characters woke up at the same time and at the end Chris Pratt's character said that they were woken up for a reason

message 6: by Sara Cee (new)

Sara Cee I said the SAME thing to my roommate! Since there are such huge differences it'll be interesting to see what they do with the same initial plot of being woken up on a spaceship that's supposed to travel for years... But I guess I don't think the movie copied the book. For me, the best part was seeing Amy's interactions with the monoethnic citizens, so unless they wake up in the sequel, it seems like it's own story (for better or worse).

Manda was thinking the same thing. seeing so many similarities and even my other half questioned the trailer after me telling him about the book when I first read it

message 8: by Fabiola (new) - added it

Fabiola Well, if the twist it's the same in the book (that's the twist in the movie), it's a very big coincience. It seems this author... was 'inspired' by the script of this movie, not the other way around. The script has been around on the internet since 2007.

Mariah Nichole Glad to see I wasn't the only one that went "hey - wait a second!" Even if the idea has been around for quite some time, I am curious to know if the author of 'ATU' had anything to do with it? There is such a thing as multiple discovery where essentially two (or more) people can discover something simultaneously or at different times without knowledge of the other. So - may not be that someone "stole" the idea - great minds think alike! :D I'm excited to see it.

Kaitlyn Black There are a lot of books and soon to be made made movies. The beginning of The 100 is very similar to Across The Universe, just remember that no one can replace Beth's work.

message 11: by Ak (new)

Ak It sounds like it could be from a book called Caretaker by Josi
Russell. I enjoyed the book. No matter what it's based on I'm looking forward to the movie.

Kristie I just saw the trailer and thought this exact thing!

message 13: by ding (new)

ding I watch the trailer a few seconds and immediately pause

message 14: by ding (new)

ding Because it's so similar to ATU

message 15: by Eva (new) - rated it 4 stars

Eva I just saw the preview and thought the same thing!

message 16: by Michelle (new)

Michelle AK - I agree with you! It seems very much like "Caretaker" - very very similar!! Based on the trailer, I told my husband- Intead a book last year that is just like this trailer- I loved the book and the second one is really good also!!!

message 17: by Brian (new)

Brian According to Wikipedia's entry - "The Metro described its plot as bearing a resemblance to the EC Comics book 50 Girls 50, first published in August 1953,[15] in which two passengers of a colony spaceship are awoken from hibernation early and fall in love."

Tiara Lorena I was thinking the exact same thing, But I guess the fact that the plot is similar to these books will be the only reason for me to watch the movie... hope I can find out who woke em up? hahahha

message 19: by Ak (new)

Ak Michelle- Thank you for letting me know about the 2nd Caretaker book. I'll read it soon. Passengers looks very good, can't wait.

message 20: by Roseanne (new) - added it

Roseanne Just saw the preview for Passengers and I guessed the title of the movie as AtU. It's interesting to learn that the basic plot is from a 50's comic. ;) Can't wait to see this movie now.

message 21: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Muetz allen steel's Coyote series has a subplot of a passenger waking up years early also. No hot co-passenger though..basically the poor guy lives alone for like 50 years till he dies from old age. oh..and eats 50 years worth of food that comes back to bite the ship when it arrives at the colony planet Coyote

message 22: by John (new)

John Belfiore Try reading Destination Void by Frank Herbert. It was written by the man who wrote Dune. Similar and very reminiscent. Not exact but right along the same lines, a good read even if not.

Rachel Racicot They're all like The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh

Amanda exactly!!! thats wt i thought immediately when I saw the trailer.so glad that i m not alone. quite excited for the movie asthe materials are very interesting

message 25: by Liz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz That's what I thought also. Interesting that the script for this has been around since 2007, though.

(side note: the ATU books are great!)

Karissa Michelle wrote: "Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be."

There are some nice and spoiler-y reviews out there! I'm not confirming or denying anything, though...

message 27: by Tony (new)

Tony DeZinno There also a book called Sleepers Awake that is very similar

Taylor Hufford I jumped out of my seat when I 1st heard of it and immetiatly thought of ATU

message 29: by Esme (new)

Esme Mary The book, The Ghosts of Heaven, came to mind for me... The idea behind the spaceship in both is pretty much the same, and the malfunction.

message 30: by Tim (last edited Jan 04, 2017 07:10AM) (new)

Tim "The Passengers" looks a lot like the "Caretaker Chronicles".

Elias Other way around. This book actually ripped off Passengers, if anything. THIS IS NOT A JOKE, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND PASSENGERS ARE NOT TIME TRAVELERS. The script for Passengers has been around for a decade, finding continual difficulty to get made. Across the Universe came out five years ago. Beth may have read the script and wrote the book knowing that she could get away with it assuming that Passengers wouldn't get made-- until it did. It's a really good movie, despite some messed-up morals-- Jennifer Lawrence steals the show.

Elias Michelle wrote: "Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be."

This is correct. Jim spends a year alone on the Avalon, tries to kill himself and regains his hope for life when he happens upon Aurora, a writer, reads her writing and falls for her. Then, after a long moral dilemma, he wakes her up. It's a really good movie, even though the movie's idea of it being right to wake her up kind of weirded me out, but the acting, worldbuilding and characters are great and I love that she's a writer.

message 33: by Liz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz ^ I agree. His morals are definitely messed up but there's no rule that says characters have to be 100% pure and good. EW.com HATED that he did that so they gave it a D+ ... I gave it 3.5/5 in my movie review: http://www.yesnofilms.com/2016/12/mov...

Sounds about right. The acting was superb, the characters were interesting and the setting was just fascinating. The ending was a bit of a cop out but I liked it a lot. I love Aurora. She's gorgeous (she's Jennifer Lawrence, so of course she's hot) but what makes her really special is her mind and her words-- she's an intellectual first, and it's awesome to see a movie do that.

Bleupom Elias wrote: "Other way around. This book actually ripped off Passengers, if anything. THIS IS NOT A JOKE, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND PASSENGERS ARE NOT TIME TRAVELERS. The script for Passengers has been around for a..."

Thats a really bold claim to make. You say the book ripped of Passengers because Beth "may" have read the script? You have no way of knowing that.

Elias Bleupom wrote: "Elias wrote: "Other way around. This book actually ripped off Passengers, if anything. THIS IS NOT A JOKE, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND PASSENGERS ARE NOT TIME TRAVELERS. The script for Passengers has bee..."

I said "if anything". Chances are it's a huge coincidence; all I said is that it's more likely that Beth stole it from Jon Spaihts than the other way around.

message 37: by Steven (new)

Steven Steel OMG YES IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME PLOT LMAO - GUY WAKES GIRL UP, GIRL GETS PISSED OFF BLAH BLAH BLAH

Johanna Ooh I've just seen the trailer and I thought it was based on this book

message 39: by Brent (new)

Brent Beebe Jeff wrote: "allen steel's Coyote series has a subplot of a passenger waking up years early also. No hot co-passenger though..basically the poor guy lives alone for like 50 years till he dies from old age. oh....."

Thank you! I've been wracking my brain to remember the name and author of that book. It was a series of books.

message 40: by Ron (new)

Ron Sneider Apparently the "Passengers" script is one of those scripts thats been passed around hollywood for quite some time because though many directors loved it it was considered a financial black hole. Interstellar romance is only popular in books they thought. It wasn't until the financial successes of stuff like Gravity and Interstellar and The Martian that it was finally picked up.

So no I don't think its copying this particular book.

message 41: by Joan (new)

Joan I wish there were more books out there about crews and passengers travelling to other worlds. It sets my imagination wild. I loved Passengers!

message 42: by Sadia (new)

Sadia Noooooooooo! I reeeeeeeally want to read this book and have marked it in my TBR but I JUST watched The Passengers yesterday and now it's ruined this book for me!!! Has anyone read the book after watching the movie? Did it ruin your reading experience? I'm still going to read it though :) but that's so sad. :(

Clara I thought it was just me! When i went to see the movie the story line seemed reeeeeally familiar until i realized it was eerily similar to this book
