Maka “Nel and Sula stood some distance away from the grave, the space that had sat between them in the pews had dissolved… They relaxed slowly until during the walk back home their fingers were laced in as gentle a clasp as that of any two young girlfriends trotting up the road on a summer day wondering what happened to butterflies in the winter.”

Maka I see that 3 of y'all have seen this but not one of y'all have helped me
:(

Sally Atwell Williams I took it to mean that for a short time their childhood friendship reignited, and they were back in the past, and happy and unburdened.

Christopher To me it means they are as carefree as children after having adult burdens.

Jennifer I took it to mean they were emotionally distant from each other during the funeral, and as they were going back home that emotional distance slowly dissolved almost as much as right before the accidental death, when they were best friends with no tragedy between the two of them.

Renate whose funeral is this?

Darby Puckett I think that Nel and Sula were feeling guilty during the funeral, as they were responsible for his death. But when they left the funeral, they realized that life goes on and they can move on to thinking about more trivial matters.
