The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset

I hate the Hunger Games, does anyone else?

I mean, one of my good friends loves reality tv and I think it's a soul-sucking waste of time, but it doesn't affect our friendship at all. Other than to laugh about it, I mean.
So don't feel bad that it happened. It's probably a huge blessing to you to see what they are really like now rather than later.
I want to address the one thing you said though: "I have a slight problem with a book about killing people, especially young kids/teenagers."
That aspect of the book is supposed to make you angry. If a person is reading something violent simply for the pleasure of reading about people being killed, they have serious problems.
While this is a fictional book, it's grounded in some real life issues. Tyranny has been done before. Many times, and not all in the past.
In history, masses of people watched people kill each other, for entertainment purposes. People used to go watch people be thrown to lions - kids too.
The point of the book is not to focus on the violence and killing of kids, it's to show how wrong that is and that sometimes there are things worth fighting and risking your life for. That's why we were introduced to characters like Rue - to make you angry about the oppression and see the need to overthrow it.
I totally get it if this is not a book you want to read - despite the hype, it is not for everyone. Personally, if I had kids, they wouldn't be allowed to read it until they were older teens.

Long rant, but it's nice to be able to go somewhere and talk about this without being talked back to by *children.* It would also be nice if we could have a heroine that wasn't promoted simply because she is a girl. Shouldn't actions speak louder? All I really got from Katniss is that she's whiny, hormonal, and a girl. Granted, that's a typical teenager, but under a brutal regime, I would expect her to be a little more mature. And love triangles in general irritate me because, again, it's the hallmark of appealing to children. In all seriousness, for people who have actually been in love triangles, they aren't fun, and they aren't something to be romanticized about. They are emotional, painful, and rarely have a happy ending.

I mean, Prim was so much kinder.
And Peeta, he was also great. I would date the hell out of Peeta.
But I'm not feeling Katniss. But this is how conversations go when I told my friends this:
"Hey guys, lets discuss fandoms." (Me)
"Fire away." (Friends)
"I thought the Hunger Games was pretty-"
"AMAZING??? INCREDIBLE??? PERFECT IN EVERY WAY???"
"No, actually, it was stupid."
"HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY RELIGION??? RACIST!!!"
"It's a fandom. There are better fandoms. Like Supernatural. Or Percy Jackson."
"HUNGER GAMES IS LOVE HUNGER GAMES IS LIFE!!!"
"It's... It's a book and a movie..."
"BUT IT'S SO MUCH MORE!!!"
"Well, yeah. It's also pathetic." *Smooth Criminal plays as I walk away as the girls stand in shock and weep as if I had kicked the cutest puppy ever.*
I'm sorry your friends were so shallow about it! I can't stand any of The Hunger Games --- skimmed the first book, decided not to risk any of the others; watched the first movie, hated it so passionately I can't begin to describe my position.
I mean, I understand that the depressing dystopian world is supposed to offend me and upset me because it's never okay to pit people against people, or kids against kids, for the powers-that-be to make a point. It's social commentary.
Doesn't mean I have to like it, or appreciate it.
If I want to read something inordinately depressing about people killing other people, I'll watch the news. That'll do it for me.
And I didn't like Peeta, who was supposed to be this fantastic ally ... I don't know. Maybe he improved in the other books/movies, but I really wasn't happy with him in the first.

okay first of all prim was kind but she was so weak at times and was always so scared, second of all wtfff does this have to do with dating peeta, what does that have to do with katniss?? and lastly katniss had A LOT of pressure during this book so you have absoultly no reasons to judge her!

why would you quote the fault in our stars if you "hate it so much"

AMEN

no... no support fromr me to the negativity based on this book

This is exactly how I feel. I personally really don't like Katniss, or anything to do with a love triangle and some girl who is made as a hero but actually really stuck up and worshipped by fans.

and what is you're evidence, half of you guys have to stop saying 'i hate it too' BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO REASONING

Katniss just gives females a bad name, in terms of combat. If she had been in my regiment, I would have hit her, not even joking. I would have struck her and told her to get her sh*t together. All she does is whine and complain. She does very little fighting herself and usually just sits back while others are fighting around her. What did she really do in the first book? Hide in trees and behind other shrubbery until most of the people around her were dead. Granted, that’s a tatic, the coward’s tatic, (you won’t be respected for that in the military), but it’s a way.
I only made it through half of the second book before I just called it quits. She is awful. She’s not a good role model for girls and she’s even a good fighter. She’s good at running away, but standing her ground and confronting the enemy? I’ll take my chances with the next platoon. Maybe they'll have better soliders.
And I don’t buy the apologists' claim that she is a piss-poor solider because she’s not supposed to fight, she was forced into that role. That is bull. There are lots of people in the military who don’t want to be there, who regret their decision or who signed up only out of family tradition or economic reasons. They don’t get passes to be free loaders. If women want to be seen as serious fighters, if we want the same rights to fight along side men and be respected for it, then stop complaining. It doesn’t matter what brought you to this point. You’re here, suck it up, start training, and defend your fellow brother/sister. Whining about what brought you here and hiding while others around die around you will earn you no respect.
But, I guess as a teenage child, she’s pretty on par. I just don’t see her as a strong role model and it's a little disconcerting that others do. There are certainly other female characters in literature who are I would pick over her to watch my back.

I loved the Hunger Games but you should be able to voice your opinion without getting bashed.
I liked it simple because it can become a reality. The world is going crazy and these things are already happening in parts of the world to children and adults alike.
Now the Maze Runner..that is complete crap. lol

I'm with you. I prefer works that have and will continue to stand the test of time. These various series' (which, if you look more closely, are all extraordinarily similar) are popular one day and will be gone the next.

Dear authors,
The next time you want to set up a world where characters have difficulty finding food, then please make something magical up like: needing a particular nectar to live-and so people hunt magical trees. Giving your characters a different food source rather than the usual hunt for animals is defintely, way, way more creative and interesting to read about!
Sincerely,
Minesha

Not all teenage girls are total airheads. Some of us actually care about important matters.

Besides that, am I the only one thinking that most, if not all, books for teens and young adults are starting to sound pretty much the same? Must be why I can't read any of them. :/

It has been a year, and I've only just logged back on to see this and OHMYGODS
WHAT

EARTH
I am still very anti-Hunger Games, but I feel slightly ashamed for my first comment on here. I feel like some of it was immature and that it could have been expressed better, but I suppose that's just me getting older.
I really wanted to delete this, but I didn't have permission, so I think I'm just going to delete this account and move on. I know this won't make the thread go away, and I respect all of your opinions and comments.
I'm glad that this is a good way for a lot of you to express your feelings about books. Write on :)!
Thanks for the reassurance and opinions. I hope you guys continue to support and interact with each other.

How old are you, may I ask? Because Katniss was only 16 when she entered the hunger games. A game where you fight TO THE DEATH. With other innocent kids her own age. She didn't want to kill other children. She felt horrible once she killed the boy who killed her only friend. She avoided it as best she could. I admit, I never thought of Katniss as a fantastic warrior or fighter because she wasn't. I thought of her as a girl who gave the world hope, weather purposeful or not. You don't HAVE to be GREAT to be great.

THANK YOU. OH MY GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH! I agree 1000%!

So unfortunately true.

You're absolutely right and it is sad. But how can you hate the hunger games just because other people respect Katniss more than people they should ACTUALLY be admiring? Do you mean you hate children's reaction to the hunger games?

Although I disagree, those reasons make much more sense. :) Btw, I wasn't trying to be rude before, in case it came out that way.

Lol what's strange is that I loved the Hunger Games with all my heart and sincerely disliked the maze runner.

I read the entire series about 2-3 years ago, very shortly before they became popular. At first they were ok, but I have a couple personal problems about the Hunger Games. First of all, I don't know about you, but I have a slight problem with a book about killing people, especially young kids/teenagers. Yay, let's all read it! (I have a strange sense of humor) Second, (this is very personal), I started archery above a year before I heard about/read The Hunger Games. Yeah, that's right, I'm one of those people who -gasp- liked archery BEFORE THE HUNGER GAMES! Yeah, it's actually possible, people. The fact that my usual archery range is now full of Katniss fans doesn't help at all. They kind of either a) ignore us and act like total pros till they completely miss the target or b) ask us for help then totally ignore us after learning all the rules and tips we offer. Not only that, but when I told my friends that I didn't like the Hunger Games, they got really mad and we had a huge argument that left me with only 3 really good friends, one who moved to the other side of our planet and only get to talk to about once a month (bad reception and lots of homework). Anyway, the fact that I can't express myself doesn't help at all. I get made fun of, and now everyone goes out of their way to annoy "that crazy girl who actually hates the greatest book series in the world!" (according to all the other girls at my school). My point is that this series has taken away some of my pleasures, freedoms, and friends, and I'm kind of wondering if anyone else is having/had the same problem. I googled 'I hate the Hunger Games' and it led me to a different page, but I created an account in hope I could find other people like me. Anyway, could you at least comment/reply below so I now I'm not the only one out there? Thank you! If you're a fan, please don't clutter up this area by posting about the TOTALLY AMAZING Hunger Games and 'HOW DARE YOU? IT WAS THE BEST SERIES EVER' and "I LOVED IT! YOU ARE INSANE TO HATE IT!" I've just heard that too many times and I actually want my voice to be heard.
