If you're a huge fan of the Hunger Games Trilogy, strop reading this now.
If you're not, please, feel free to continue and post.
I read the entire series about 2-3 years ago, very shortly before they became popular. At first they were ok, but I have a couple personal problems about the Hunger Games. First of all, I don't know about you, but I have a slight problem with a book about killing people, especially young kids/teenagers. Yay, let's all read it! (I have a strange sense of humor) Second, (this is very personal), I started archery above a year before I heard about/read The Hunger Games. Yeah, that's right, I'm one of those people who -gasp- liked archery BEFORE THE HUNGER GAMES! Yeah, it's actually possible, people. The fact that my usual archery range is now full of Katniss fans doesn't help at all. They kind of either a) ignore us and act like total pros till they completely miss the target or b) ask us for help then totally ignore us after learning all the rules and tips we offer. Not only that, but when I told my friends that I didn't like the Hunger Games, they got really mad and we had a huge argument that left me with only 3 really good friends, one who moved to the other side of our planet and only get to talk to about once a month (bad reception and lots of homework). Anyway, the fact that I can't express myself doesn't help at all. I get made fun of, and now everyone goes out of their way to annoy "that crazy girl who actually hates the greatest book series in the world!" (according to all the other girls at my school). My point is that this series has taken away some of my pleasures, freedoms, and friends, and I'm kind of wondering if anyone else is having/had the same problem. I googled 'I hate the Hunger Games' and it led me to a different page, but I created an account in hope I could find other people like me. Anyway, could you at least comment/reply below so I now I'm not the only one out there? Thank you! If you're a fan, please don't clutter up this area by posting about the TOTALLY AMAZING Hunger Games and 'HOW DARE YOU? IT WAS THE BEST SERIES EVER' and "I LOVED IT! YOU ARE INSANE TO HATE IT!" I've just heard that too many times and I actually want my voice to be heard.

Kelly Brigid ♡ I understand what you mean. This series is most definitely NOT the best series in the world. Those are just the insane fangirls, pfft. I was seriously into it for a time, but now I just think it's alright. I'm sorry to hear that how this trilogy has really affected your life. :( My best friend doesn't like the trilogy, but no one in my school cares that she does or doesn't. I think that your true friends are the ones who don't give a hell whether you like a dumb series or not.

Alyss Frey I am a HUGE fan of The Hunger Games, and I think it is COMPLETELY okay for people to not like it or hate it. It has themes that can make people scared or uncomfortable, and it is totally okay to dislike it. Most of my friends only like it or don't like it at all. I am truly sorry that these books had a bad impact on your life.

Kristen Sorry, no, I am not a fellow hater of HG, but your opinion is valid in not liking it. And seriously, if your 'friends' decide to not be friends over something that stupid, they are a)not really your friends to begin with, and b)not people you need in your life anyway.

I mean, one of my good friends loves reality tv and I think it's a soul-sucking waste of time, but it doesn't affect our friendship at all. Other than to laugh about it, I mean.
So don't feel bad that it happened. It's probably a huge blessing to you to see what they are really like now rather than later.

I want to address the one thing you said though: "I have a slight problem with a book about killing people, especially young kids/teenagers."

That aspect of the book is supposed to make you angry. If a person is reading something violent simply for the pleasure of reading about people being killed, they have serious problems.
While this is a fictional book, it's grounded in some real life issues. Tyranny has been done before. Many times, and not all in the past.
In history, masses of people watched people kill each other, for entertainment purposes. People used to go watch people be thrown to lions - kids too.
The point of the book is not to focus on the violence and killing of kids, it's to show how wrong that is and that sometimes there are things worth fighting and risking your life for. That's why we were introduced to characters like Rue - to make you angry about the oppression and see the need to overthrow it.

I totally get it if this is not a book you want to read - despite the hype, it is not for everyone. Personally, if I had kids, they wouldn't be allowed to read it until they were older teens.

message 5: by Misty (new) - added it

Misty Ok I can under stand that all of you don't like it and I won't hate you for it but about that young kids/adults and killing it's best to expose them when there a bit younger cause if they find out all this stuff when there older they might freak out a little. I think it's just best to tell them and explain calmly cause they might see something on tv and it could freak them out. Don't hate on me please I just wanted to explain...

CeeCee James I just wanted to say I'm sorry for what your friends did. :( (((big hug)))) You are worth better than that!

SpookySoto I hate it too

Matt I thought the books were entertaining but far from the best thing I have ever read. I do see how people could be offended by the violence especially towards children being a father I have to just remind my self it's just a silly book.

message 9: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim I really love the Hunger Games and i'm not here to convince you otherwise. I think everyone is entitled to there own opinion and personally not to offend you, but if your friends left you for something that stupid i'd say they weren't really your friends. I also think that its an incredible book and maybe in the future you will come around and maybe try reading it again. And then see if you like it... :)

message 10: by Rose (last edited Oct 01, 2014 03:32AM) (new)

Rose I hate it too. My friend/s, however, absolutely loves it. They're all over it. I however, tried to read it one day in the library, and I didn't like it, it had an alright plot, I guess. Also the whole series was spoiled for me already. But I don't like these types of books anyway, I guess some can call me a strange teen for hating the likes of Divergent, Hunger Games, and Matched. But some like it, I mean it can be seen as a good book, but not by me. I'd rather read better.

Margarita i mean i guess, yo but think about it this thing is rad like legitimately AMAZING!!!!! sorry but i just don't agree. youuu knooowww but i do recommend the raft, yes its an easy read, but it really captures the readers attention, also agreeing with some people that commented, i wont judge cause i probably hate things you dont, but in my opinion i really enjoy to read the hunger games and i really dont even get bored of it.

Anahi I HATED THIS SERIES! i also hated the matched series, the beautiful creature series, the city of bones series, and i haven't even read the divergent series. I think these type of books are just not for me.I hate myself sometimes when i don't like a series but i still read the books hoping the series gets better. WASTE OF TIME when there are better books out there.

message 13: by Jane (last edited Oct 03, 2014 10:01PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Jane Oh wow. I feel like I've found some secret community or something. Yes, I don't like the HG (hate might be a strong word, but I really, really don't like it.) I don't enjoy the premise, I don't enjoy the "female hero is strong because she is a female and a hero" theme shoved down our throats, and I *really* don't like the fans (generally speaking.) You try to critique *anything* about it, and it's like you just insulted Jesus, God, and the Buddha in one breath. I don't get why so many little girls get so excited over this series or why they defend it to the point of being obnoxious and rude. My brother practiced archery before the series was popular as well and now his club is overrun with stuck-up, (I'm sorry, but they are), pre-teen girls. Children, who are only there because they think it makes them a warrior or something, and they aren't even good at it! They don't want to learn! They take picture after picture after picture of each other just holding the bow and then spend the rest of the time posting them on God knows what site. But even though they aren't doing anything, daddy's money is still green enough that owner won't kick them out. They won't be part of a competition, nobody takes them seriously, but he lets them stay, which frustrates my brother and his friends to no end.

Long rant, but it's nice to be able to go somewhere and talk about this without being talked back to by *children.* It would also be nice if we could have a heroine that wasn't promoted simply because she is a girl. Shouldn't actions speak louder? All I really got from Katniss is that she's whiny, hormonal, and a girl. Granted, that's a typical teenager, but under a brutal regime, I would expect her to be a little more mature. And love triangles in general irritate me because, again, it's the hallmark of appealing to children. In all seriousness, for people who have actually been in love triangles, they aren't fun, and they aren't something to be romanticized about. They are emotional, painful, and rarely have a happy ending.

Will Solace Who else thought that Katniss was a baby who only cared about surviving, even if she had to crush others in her way?

I mean, Prim was so much kinder.

And Peeta, he was also great. I would date the hell out of Peeta.

But I'm not feeling Katniss. But this is how conversations go when I told my friends this:

"Hey guys, lets discuss fandoms." (Me)

"Fire away." (Friends)

"I thought the Hunger Games was pretty-"

"AMAZING??? INCREDIBLE??? PERFECT IN EVERY WAY???"

"No, actually, it was stupid."

"HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY RELIGION??? RACIST!!!"

"It's a fandom. There are better fandoms. Like Supernatural. Or Percy Jackson."

"HUNGER GAMES IS LOVE HUNGER GAMES IS LIFE!!!"

"It's... It's a book and a movie..."

"BUT IT'S SO MUCH MORE!!!"

"Well, yeah. It's also pathetic." *Smooth Criminal plays as I walk away as the girls stand in shock and weep as if I had kicked the cutest puppy ever.*

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm sorry your friends were so shallow about it! I can't stand any of The Hunger Games --- skimmed the first book, decided not to risk any of the others; watched the first movie, hated it so passionately I can't begin to describe my position.

I mean, I understand that the depressing dystopian world is supposed to offend me and upset me because it's never okay to pit people against people, or kids against kids, for the powers-that-be to make a point. It's social commentary.

Doesn't mean I have to like it, or appreciate it.

If I want to read something inordinately depressing about people killing other people, I'll watch the news. That'll do it for me.

And I didn't like Peeta, who was supposed to be this fantastic ally ... I don't know. Maybe he improved in the other books/movies, but I really wasn't happy with him in the first.

Will Solace Nah it was great because that conversation actually happened. I now have respect. And some of them watch Supernatural now. So it was a double-win.

okay first of all prim was kind but she was so weak at times and was always so scared, second of all wtfff does this have to do with dating peeta, what does that have to do with katniss?? and lastly katniss had A LOT of pressure during this book so you have absoultly no reasons to judge her!

message 24: by Alex (new)

Alex First of all, I’m free to not like something. Second, I am a female veteran. I don’t like the Hunger Games because Katniss is the poorest excuse for a solider that I have read. I also generally don’t like it when PTSD is used as a tool to basically make money (particularly in this story when it isn’t even talk about correctly.) If the author really had something important and serious to say about PTSD, she would have done better research. It’s just used here to emotionally manipulate the reader towards the character and I don’t support that. PTSD is not something to be used so flippantly. I can’t even begin to describe what kind of hell it is and it's unsettling to see it so mis-used here.

Katniss just gives females a bad name, in terms of combat. If she had been in my regiment, I would have hit her, not even joking. I would have struck her and told her to get her sh*t together. All she does is whine and complain. She does very little fighting herself and usually just sits back while others are fighting around her. What did she really do in the first book? Hide in trees and behind other shrubbery until most of the people around her were dead. Granted, that’s a tatic, the coward’s tatic, (you won’t be respected for that in the military), but it’s a way.

I only made it through half of the second book before I just called it quits. She is awful. She’s not a good role model for girls and she’s even a good fighter. She’s good at running away, but standing her ground and confronting the enemy? I’ll take my chances with the next platoon. Maybe they'll have better soliders.

And I don’t buy the apologists' claim that she is a piss-poor solider because she’s not supposed to fight, she was forced into that role. That is bull. There are lots of people in the military who don’t want to be there, who regret their decision or who signed up only out of family tradition or economic reasons. They don’t get passes to be free loaders. If women want to be seen as serious fighters, if we want the same rights to fight along side men and be respected for it, then stop complaining. It doesn’t matter what brought you to this point. You’re here, suck it up, start training, and defend your fellow brother/sister. Whining about what brought you here and hiding while others around die around you will earn you no respect.

But, I guess as a teenage child, she’s pretty on par. I just don’t see her as a strong role model and it's a little disconcerting that others do. There are certainly other female characters in literature who are I would pick over her to watch my back.

I loved the Hunger Games but you should be able to voice your opinion without getting bashed.

I liked it simple because it can become a reality. The world is going crazy and these things are already happening in parts of the world to children and adults alike.

Now the Maze Runner..that is complete crap. lol

message 32: by Sylvia (last edited Nov 26, 2014 10:23PM) (new)

Sylvia Bloom I read the series a couple years ago, and shortly after finishing Mockingjay (I started dozing around Catching Fire, but I'm one of those people who has to finish any series I start), I purged my bookshelf of the trilogy by dumping it at Half Priced Books. Now, I suppose I not the right person to be judging because, being a huge fan of Jane Austen, Shakespeare, and other classic authors, I typically don't read teenage fiction, and when I do, I seldom find a book/series that I am actually impressed with. However, I really don't even understand how this series has become so popular and acclaimed. I could not stand the main character, and I am frankly tired of all my peers doting on what a strong, independent female protagonist she is (if you want a strong, independent female protagonist, pick up a Jane Austen novel!). On top of my dislike of the characters, I was not impressed with the plot, and I seriously think Suzanne Collins could have done much better in writing the trilogy. I perceived the book as relying too heavily on cheap suspense to engage the reader and not enough on strong writing. Books like that are really not my cup of tea. I don't mean to sound pretentious, but after reading and adoring so many novels that are levels and levels above the Hunger Games, I just could not get into the book.

I'm with you. I prefer works that have and will continue to stand the test of time. These various series' (which, if you look more closely, are all extraordinarily similar) are popular one day and will be gone the next.

❀ Minesha ❀ The beginning of the book started with hunting. Baahhhh.... Instant book hate. And it did not stop with just a shooting. It just went on and on about killing animals. I don't care if it was for food. It was still annoying.

Dear authors,
The next time you want to set up a world where characters have difficulty finding food, then please make something magical up like: needing a particular nectar to live-and so people hunt magical trees. Giving your characters a different food source rather than the usual hunt for animals is defintely, way, way more creative and interesting to read about!

Sincerely,
Minesha

Hunger Games is Long Yawn The Didn't read the books but the films are incredibly juvenile and without all the media hype, would probably not be successful. Saw the first 2 to be nice to a friend who wanted company at the theater but won't go see the next 2 installments - just not able to sit through anything that mediocre. I would truly suffer if I had to watch any more of that franchise. Congratulations on being an independent thinker. Your friends, more than likely, are just thinking the way the media is pushing them to think. Helps make money for all those people invested in the franchise.

message 36: by Pumpkin (last edited Dec 07, 2014 09:28PM) (new)

Pumpkin I don't know if I don't like the series, per say. Katniss is super annoying, but I kind of overlook that because she's a kid and teenage girls are kind of annoying (sorry, kids, but you are. Life is more then who the popular girls are, that half-pound gained from eating a cupcake, or who the captain of the football team is sleeping with.) However, what I don't like is what the series has become. One of the themes in the book is the ruling/elite/rich class pandering to the people, keeping them complacent, and having themselves be supported with fruits from their labor. Now think about how the HGs are marketed. You don't see any parallel to the books? Their Subway deals? Their t-shirt deals? *Anything* material that has the brand on it? "Buy this corporate product! It's Katniss approved!" Where are these shirts/tote bags/water bottles even made? Bangladesh? Vietnam? China? Where people are paid like a buck a day? People in the West pay $20...for a $1 shirt. Where does that money go? It doesn't go to the workers. I can only assume it goes to the people who own the brand. So people who are already wealthy, are getting even more wealthy, off the back of poor labor. It's really a shame how the HGs series has become the Panem-style government it mocks

Lindsey I'll be the first to admit I've never read these books and I don't ever plan on picking them up. I just don't see the appeal of reading about teenagers killing each other for basically no reason. My answer to anyone who asks why I won't touch them is, if I wanted to hear about kids murdering each other, I'd just tune in to one of the many territorial wars happening in Africa. Let's just say I've turned a few people off the books with this line of reasoning.

Lindsey That's how some people are already seeing the Twilight books. Let's hope the same thing happens with this 50 Shades nonsense, too.
Besides that, am I the only one thinking that most, if not all, books for teens and young adults are starting to sound pretty much the same? Must be why I can't read any of them. :/

Caroline1745 I completely agree with you. I hate the Hunger Games And it ruined my life for a period of time. I was obsessed. I just absolutely took over my brain. And as for 50 shades of grey.... Its smut central and the people who read it (I am not one of them but I know what it's about) have got to be very disturbed. I mean VERY DISTURBED. How old are you, may I ask? Because Katniss was only 16 when she entered the hunger games. A game where you fight TO THE DEATH. With other innocent kids her own age. She didn't want to kill other children. She felt horrible once she killed the boy who killed her only friend. She avoided it as best she could. Katy Power I like it a lot,but I question the TV. Second, I have the weirdest interests for a 9 yr old. I think that weapons are cool. I only need a knife and wood to kill you. I sharpen the wood into a stake. I know that will kill someone fast. I love archery after the hunger games. My favorite character was Thresh. He even, in my opinion in the movie looks like my dad. I am a pretty good shot. I usually get the red on my target. I also had a bb gun before. I think that there are real life Katniss's and Gale's. They are in today's society. But if this was to happen in reality. She's 16! Then 17! It's just all messed up, but still good books. I allow you to have your opinion, and to have mine. Thank you.
