-Sam and his brothers are at Craster’s. Sam is trying to keep Bannen, one of the brothers, alive. Nos Sam is called the Slayer because he slayed an Other, but he doesn’t like the name at all. They were warmer and they had food, but it’s not like Craster gives them much. They are not dying, but they are hungry. Samw as trying to keep this Bannen alive basically with nothing, they no medicine, no stewards and took care of the wounded like they could. Even though they are not in the open anymore, it’s not like they are having a good time. It must be so awful to pretty much sit there and watch the men die because they don’t have anything to give them.
-Poor Sam was really tired, but when he slept he dreamt of snow and wights, so he didn’t get much sleep. I wonder how much time they spent at Craster, I forgot to write it down if it’s mentioned.
-Gilly was giving birth and Craster complains about her screaming. He is so awful, she is having his kid and he complains. He beats his wives on a regular basis, and neither the brothers nor her wives defend the ones Craster beats. The men of the Watch were his guests and I understand those were his rules. And I guess he beats the other women who get in the way as well, so they just don’t. It’s really sad, and it makes me likes Craster even less.
-Craster gave them wine, food and a roof, but he wasn’t thrilled about having them there. Meanwhile Sam hopes Gilly has a baby boy. I think Sam really knows what happens with the boys, I think Gilly told him something and he figured out the rest.
-Sam went out, it wasn’t so cold as it was in the Fist. Craster said they will never have an attack there, he is a godly man. It’s awful what he does to the boys though, he is so cruel! Some brothers were losing arrows and asked Sam to show them how he slew the Other, mocking him of course. He told them he didn’t use an arrow, but they didn’t care. He didn’t want them to laugh at him, so he went. But on his way he lost his boot in the mud, and they laughed. Poor Sam! He thinks he is useless like his father says, but he’s not! He killed an Other, and that’s awesome!
-Grenn shows up, he calls him Slayer as well but doesn’t see it like a bad thing, because he did slay after all. But Sam thinks the brothers say it mocking him, and some do. But Grenn said he didn’t mean it like that. I really liked this conversation with Grenn, and he was really good. He told Sam he was scared as well, and maybe by pretending you are not afraid is how you become brave. Grenn feared fighting Jon who always seem to go for the kill in his opinion, but he didn’t say anything. He got scared like everybody though, and I liked he told Sam. Sam just wanted to be Sam Tarly, not piggy or slayer.
-Not all the brothers believed the story about killing the Other with dragonglass. But they told Mormont, and he asked a few questions. They didn’t have a lot of what Jon found, which is not good. Aw, Sam wishes Jon was there, to really talk, in a different way he did with Grenn. He believes Jon wouldn’t have called him Slayer, and I think he wouldn’t since Sam doesn’t like it. He wonders what happened to Jon, and fears he is a wight now. I guess most believe he died.
-Mormont shows up. I forgot they had so few mounts. They have to go back to the Wall, Craster doesn’t want them there. The Lord Commander calls Sam, and I found it funny he told Sam to try not to soil his smallclothes everytime he looks at him, lol. Sam says they didn’t know about the dragonglass, but Mormont says they surely did before, but they forgot. They lost sight of the true enemy and not it was there. Mormont said the Wall was not built to keep men from stealing women, and of course it makes sense. They talk about dragonglass a bit more, Sam believes they don’t need dragons to make it, but they can take it from the earth, is called obsidian as well. They need more, but don’t know where to look. I forgot Sam said the children knew, but Mormont told him they are dead. I wonder how much Sam knows about the children, and why he said they would knew where to find more.
-Craster had a boy and goes out to tell so. It was brave and stupid at the same time how Sam said they could take the baby to the Wall if he didn’t want him. Craster said he would never give the boy to them, he was his blood. Of course Mormont didn’t like it at all and said he was a fool. Sam said Gilly wanted to go as well, but Jeor told him to shup up about it.
-Sam goes back to Bannen, now dead, and Giant and Dirk were there as well. They said he died because he wasn’t fed, and he was cold as well. Dirk was not happy about the situation at all. They burned him, and said the words. It was kind of funny Mormont had no idea where he was from. Sam feels terrible because he thinks Bannen smelt like pork, so he puked. Dolorous Edd thought the same. He has a weird humor, but I like it. He told Sam they would ride at first light.
-Craster gave them a “feast” to say goodbye, horsemeant and beer and some bread. Sam thinks the wives look alike. Well, it makes sense of course. They gave the brothers two loaves of bread, and they didn’t like it. After everything just went downhill.
-The brothers started naming all the food they thought Craster had, and I think it made it worst, thinking how much they could have been eating. They called Craster liar, niggard and bastard, touching a sensitive point there. He didn’t like it one bit. He had his axe in hand, and told them to go. Mormont tried to calm them down, and it didn’t work. Dirk killed Craster; Mormont said they were cursed now, they were guest and killed, and Ollor stabbed Mormont. This chapter was really brutal, and I couldn’t believe what was happening the first time.
-Later, Sam was with Mormont’s head on his lap, shocked. Grenn tried to make him move, but couldn’t. So he, Giant and Dolorous run away. Mormont told Sam before he died to go to the Wall and tell them everything. He also said his dying wish was his son Jorah takes the black, he also said he forgave him. I really liked Mormont, so I was really sad when he died.
-Even though Sam was still shocked, he knew he would die if he stayed. Two old women and Gilly went to him, and told him to take Gilly and the baby with him, to some place warm. I think they meant more than a place with a fireplace. It was really cute how Gilly called him ser crow, and said she would be his wife. It was fucking creepy how the chapter ending, with the women saying the boy’s brothers were coming. But I wonder if she meant the baby wights or the wights in general. I am not saying baby wights are not scary or won’t do harm, but I think it makes more sense she meant the wights as a whole. I am guessing the babies end up being wights but I don’t remember if they do, or if they end up being food. I can’t remember if this is explained more.
