Jgrace I don't like it here, but it's good to be with friends when you're stuck on a desert island.

We have both been here for awhile without really acquiring a taste for this site. I'm not sure if it is a desert or a metropolis lacking in aesthetics or views of the flora and fauna that I object to. I'm going to try to focus on the good points now.
Many of us are already here.
Their your Year in 2015 was a very cool feature.
I like that you can track where you are in a book.
I like the page where you review the book better.

I've added a book. They sent me an email last night and it seems that I should be able to move our groups bookshelf to Good reads.

I don't think it has to be a problem. Take a look at how this group is organized:

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments I am very attached to nested discussions. Have been posting in a Leafmarks discussion and must say I much prefer it. The initial page for a group is better at GR (looking at Story's example for The Reading for Pleasure Group) but then it falls apart when you go into a discussion.

Have You checked out our group home page. I've spiffied it up a bit.

I went on leafmarks finally and couldn't seem to do anything, but I will continue to try to figure it out.

Story (storyheart) Just got this note from Shelfari:

" We wanted to let you know that we received your request to export data from Shelfari and will process it in the order received. Due to high request volume, we are experiencing delays - and processing your request may take 1-2 weeks.

Please know that we are working around the clock to speed things up. We apologize for the delay and will ensure that you get your requested export. "

So looks like we might get our shelves sent over eventually.

I haven't received my note yet. I am doing it piecemeal in the meantime. I have 1,000 read books on my Goodreads shelf and 1,500 on my Shelfari shelf.

So my books have arrived on my Goodreads shelf without being notified. I'm not sure if they arrived with reviews, but the tags came with them, because I first noticed new shelves on my Goodreads page.

Ironically now I have 100 more than I had on Shelfari.

I've always had more books at Goodreads than Shelfari. When I joined Shelfari, you couldn't just click on a book to add it- you had to do a search. Way too much work. When I joined Goodreads, I could look at other people's shelves and just click to add. I finally quit when I realized how many obscure books I was adding from my teen years, etc.

I also decided to remove books from the TBR at Shelfari (to maintain a reasonable number) after I imported to Goodreads. I have made it a point to add to the TBR here when I added to Shelfari, but the deletions didn't happen. Guess I'll have to set the TBR ceiling at 400 instead of 350, at least for the time being.

I've also noticed as I've been looking at the shelves here that many books are on the wrong shelf as far as read/to be read. Oh well.

So good!!

My books were imported, however, I've got duplicates, ones I already dated and had reviews in are out of order with no reviews and books which I have never read are marked as read.

I was truly hoping that I wouldn't have to go through and straighten out my shelf...it really is a tedious job.

Technically, that's not supposed to happen, but evidently the system is flawed.

message 29: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) I wrote to the help desk at Goodreads today to see if anything could be done about the 1200 extra 'shelves' they created using my old Shelfari tags and some kind person there had it all straightened out for me in under two hours/two emails. So maybe they can help with your duplicates too.

I was hoping it wouldn't and I really wouldn't have realized it, but I compared some people's shelf with mine and saw books I hadn't read marked as read and no ratings and duplicates, so I went back and checked. I've been doing a piecemeal and had my read shelf through from now to part of 2012...I hope this part hasn't been changed.

Storyheart wrote: "So maybe they can help with your duplicates too. ."

What I'm seriously bummed about is that I had worked a little at a time adding the books in order that I had read from 2012 until this point and now I've lost some of that input, some stayed some disappeared. All my cat mystery books are out of order again and as you remember they were a good part of 2014.

Crap, crap, crap...I hate the redo!

I so loved my shelfari shelf.

OK, on your bookshelf on top to the right, you can click on settings. There is a button that says position you can list your books by number. or click date read and your books will be in order by the date you read them.

My to be read bookshelf is listed by position (#) and my read bookshelf is listed by date read. If you need a example. I hope this will help.

Oh, for catching duplicates click batch edites then on the top right click on find duplicates and it will list all your duplicates. Then you have option to delete the ones you don't want. I use this one a lot.

Thanks, Diana, I figured that out, but many of the date reads are missing, so I had to go through and fix and I was able to eliminate duplicates, but again time consuming.

I'm missing about 300 read books, but I think they are books I read earlier in life....I've corrected back to 2011. My goal is to have it correct to 2010.

message 35: by mef (new)

mef (mefoley) | 11 comments This is one more hassle in my life that I really, really don't need. Hard to stay even remotely positive. As for the compare books feature, that's a bit better than the Shelfari 'Books in Common' feature, but otherwise...I'm not impressed, but I reckon I'll get used to it.

And Lord only knows what's already on my Goodreads shelf; the first time I came to Goodreads, years ago, I had no idea what I was doing and it kept presenting me with books and saying "don't you want to read these?" and I kept saying "Why, yes, thank you, I would" so I guess they've ALL been added to my TBR, and I didn't mean for them to be. I was saying to those books "Pleased to meet you" and Goodreads was pimping them to me, saying "We will bring them to your tent." And I never figured out, on that first attempt, how to get out of that system-shoving-books-at-me mode!

As I said on FB: if there's one thing I surely do not need, it is recommendations from some algorithm designed by somebody I don't know.

If all my reading data as stored in Shelfari gets over here, I will be very pleased (and darned amazed).

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments My worst problem are 41, yesterday, and 47 today, emails that I can't read unless I go back to 'read on goodreads'.. I'm sure I've changed a setting somewhere as most of the emails are from threads I have not even commented on... A few from the aussie group does display the message. Not a big problem. I am amazed at how poorly they hit my interest when they suggest books. They do better when they tell me a book on my TBR has a give-away. The people who like this book also liked these are a better match.

I hate what they put on my favorites shelf. Can I please say which books are my favorites?

I've already left one new group and asked for no notifications from the other as there is enough clutter in my life without exploring new areas. Plenty of time for that later, or not.
