Janey Kollock | 11 comments Anyone else tear up at the prelude? The idea that ALL of us tend to judge a book by it's cover, no matter how open-minded we think we are. I loved the lesson! Now time to get on my purple Harley :-)

Ash | 155 comments Moved to the "My Life on the Road" folder
Please consider putting a new thread in a corresponding folder. Thank you!

Janey Kollock | 11 comments I'm so sorry- I thought I had already put it in this folder! I was in this folder when I created it? Weird...

Ash | 155 comments There is a little dropbox called "folder" in the creation form. Also, if you've mentioned that the thread you've just created isn't in the right place, you can move it by editing - just click on the little link "edit" right after the thread's title on the top.

Jenna Baughman | 1 comments I also loved the prelude! As a bonus, I'm listening to the audiobook and the prelude and introduction were read by the author herself so it added an extra special touch.

Caitlin Rice (caito1055) | 3 comments Yes! I'm a little behind, just bought the book yesterday and read the Prelude and Intro. I'm already drawn in by her powerful writing. One of my favorite quotes is "What seems to be one thing from a distance is very different up close." I think is everyone kept this in mind the world would be a very different place.

Kelly (goodreadscomkaos127) | 18 comments I loved the Introduction. Partly because I lived for five years in the Sturgis, SD area, and I experienced Rally first hand several times. Many of the bikers were doctors and lawyers--very much the opposite of the typical "biker" image. A lot of people rented their houses out during Rally, so they could get away and make a nice sum of money at the same time. The bikers who rented those houses were some of the most courteous people--because they wanted to be able to rent that house again! When upwards of a million people descend on your community, the instinct is to be afraid, but it was really a lot of fun--if a bit loud! And there were lots of women as well. I never saw a purple Harley, but the women could clearly hold their own.

Kelly, that sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in a generally urban area, so I can't imagine how jarring it must be to live in a place with a relatively small population that is suddenly overrun by people!

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments I really liked the prelude. It was not something highly sophisticated, but rather raw, real experience. It's a summary of the book. It is a memory, and it makes you smile, laugh, think and so much more.

It must be a really special atmosphere if a place is crowded when it is normally not.

I have to say that I quoted a passage on the same page:
"I tell you this story because it's the kind of lesson that can be learned only on the road. And also, because I've come to believe that, inside, each of us has a a purple motorcycle.
We only have to discover it - and ride."

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments I also really liked the prelude because it was a foreshadowing of the book as a whole. Travelling with different people, meeting at a place where normally nobody is and suddenly there's a crowd, highly memorable quotes and so on. Now that I come to think of it, I think it's the book in a nutshell.
