Spent the weekend looking over the various book sites and feeling better about our decision to move here.

Setting up folders and getting organized. It will be a learning curve for all of us, but I think it will work well for us in the long run.

Other than that ... got new microfibre sheets and my stars they are slippery!

How do you like the mini series so far?

Diana S | 4 comments Had a great time this weekend, performed in the Jamboozie parade in Laredo, Tx. What fun! Saw Los Texmaniacs perform on the main stage. Awesome! Of course, we tried some the food vendors. The enchiladas mexicanos were supreme :) yum! And I found a little time to do a little sightseeing and shopping. Oh what fun! :D

Oh, I haven't been Laredo (or Del Rio) in ages .... maybe next time I'm in Texas we'll take a little road trip.

Sorry Warren, I don't blog. I used to follow several blogs before I got on GR, but I've kinda lost interest. :(

Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, has died.

I am in mourning.

I know, me too. Only 2 books. May she rest in peace.

Sorry if I've been less active recently. My husband is having severe sciatica and we've been making rounds of doctors and imaging centers trying to get a good diagnosis. (He can't have an MRI because of the shrapnel still in his body from his war wounds in Vietnam.)

Anyway ...

He'll be having spine surgery on March 8.

message 12: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (trakka) Oh sorry to hear that BC and I wish your husband all the best for his operation on the 8th.

Yesterday was a LONG day. We were at the hospital at 8:30a ... surgery began at 11:00a and he didn't get into a room until 8:00 p.
My brother drove up from Memphis to stay with me and we finally left the hospital around 9:00p (Hubby basically kicked us out!)

Hubby is doing fairly well - controlling his pain pretty well (but he was just out of surgery and still full of anesthesia). They'll get him up and walking today.

I'm about to go back to the hospital now ... won't be on Goodreads much this week. But I AM reading!

Thanks for all your prayers and good thoughts.

Tracey (trakka) Glad to hear your husband is doing well BC. Here's to a speedy recovery for him! Enjoy your reading when you can.

Wishing you all well. Take care of yourself too, not just hubby.

Hubby's recovery has been slow - marked by pain management issues and side effects of pain meds. We saw a neurologist on Thursday and have a new Rx ... MUCH improved! I may actually be able to go back to work this coming week.

As for my reading .... ha! I started a book on March 12 and I'm on page 118. At this rate it'll take me all of April to finish the nearly 400 page book. And since I'm not taking that long commute to/from work, I've managed to get only to disc # 3 on my audio book in the car.

Oh well ... this, too, shall pass.

Just realized how long it's been since we've had any random chatter.
Anyone have any news to share?

message 23: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (trakka) Not really.... Just looking forward to our 2 week holiday in New York in August!

message 24: by Paige (new)

Paige P (paigepradko) | 74 comments Are you going to see any shows while you are in New York, Tracey?
I am looking forward to an uneventful summer, as my sons each had a wedding the past 2 summers. Work is invigorating because I am opening a new office close to home. I am also updating a website & beginning online therapy. Lots of changes, but all exciting ones.

I'm fighting a nasty summer cold. I've been home for a couple of days ... mostly in bed (or on the couch), covered in blankets. Not getting any reading done 'cause I can't seem to keep my eyes open for more than about 10 minutes.

Marti (coloreader) Summer colds are the worst!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 20 comments Sorry about the cold BC. They are the worst. Wishing you well.

message 32: by Marti (new)

Marti (coloreader) I just found out a friend and wonderful lady was put in hospice today. She has multiple myeloma and last Friday went to the hospital with some numbness in her legs. She had surgery Monday and they found a tumor causing the numbness. She's been declining at a rapid rate ever since. It got real bad, real fast. I've had cancer twice, so unfortunately I can imagine what she is going through. Not even 50 years old. :^{

Good for you! We are paying ours down by over-paying monthly. It was going to cost us to refinance to a 15 year, so we are just doing it this way.

Warren Benton | 75 comments I have a question for everyone. I do not normally bail on books. I have not not finished a book I have started in the last few years.
Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe has been one of the hardest books I have ever tried to get through. It is just so bogged down with random information that I cannot seem to make any headway.

Not sure what your question is, Warren, but I would give up. There are so many books that would inspire, inform, entertain and/or delight you. Why waste time on a book that just isn't for you?

I agree with BC. I have a loose rule that if I don't care for a book from the beginning, I give it about 50 pages. IF I begin to care for the characters or plot, I'll read another 25-50 pages. Then I will give up on the book and not look back. I have gone back to read books I gave up on when I was very young and enjoyed them, but I think that's pretty common.

I am a moderator of Who Doesn't Love a Classic? group which is one that migrated from Shelfari. We seem to finally be getting our feet under ourselves in this new format here on Goodreads, and would like to attract more members.

If you enjoy reading and discussing classics, please check us out!

Thank you

I often bail on books. This is especially true of book club books where I didn't choose to read them in the first place.

I usually set mine too high and end up lowering it. I did end up increasing it last year.

message 47: by Marti (new)

Marti (coloreader) I've increased my goal once so far. I shot low to start and I'm having a good reading year, so I increased it. I was thinking of always setting my goal at my lifetime highest number read, but I doubt I'd ever reach it again. I'm a realist!
