It's time to start thinking about our first spring read! Add your nominations for our March read here, making sure to stick within the group time period. One nomination per person please, and the nominations will close on February 1st or once we have 8 nominations, whichever comes first.

Everyman | 3574 comments Our group description says we will read "... the great books, short stories and poetry..."

We've been reading exclusively fiction, novels and short stories, for quite a while. Maybe it's time to stretch our wings a bit?

I'll nominate Tennyson's magnificent poem "In Memoriam." Many in this group are old enough to have lost friends or family members who were deeply loved, and this poem, which Queen Victoria said was the second most important work to her in her grief (the first being the Bible) is an extraordinarily beautiful and powerful statement on grief, loss, and carrying on.

It's not light reading, but it's certainly one of the great works of poetry of the period we are reading in.

In Memoriam
Alfred Lord Tennyson

Is there any theme we should stick to?
If not, I'll nominate FAthers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev. I've never read anything by him but I've heard good things about the book.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 975 comments Very interesting nominations so far! Inspired by Everyman, I’ll nominate Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

Just an FYI this was published in 1918, outside our time period

Yes and no. According to Wikipedia,"In 1907, Adams began privately circulating copies of a limited edition printed at his own expense. Commercial publication had to await its author's 1918 death, whereupon it won the 1919 Pulitzer Prize." But if that doesn't fall within our guidelines, don't add it to the list.

Alrighty, I will take my moderator's prerogative and declare it a fair contender for the March read.

This means we have our 8 nominations. Tonight I will try to set up the poll for March-we should have time for a run-off poll if there isn't a clear winner.

For those of you who missed getting your choice in, hold onto it for our next read!

Well folks, the poll is up, however it turns out I can only send one broadcast message per day. So those of you who are following can get your votes in early and I will let the entire group know tomorrow-thanks for all your suggestions.

message 15: by Lori (new)

Lori (loriwark) In celebration of Charlotte Bronte's 200th anniversary of her birth, I nominate either Jane Eyre or Villette.

Although the nominations are closed-you're in luck as Villette was nominated.
