Alexisfun Starters discussion. Anyone that doesn't know us feel free to join.

Alexisfun HALLO

Sebastian type type type

Rebecca Lissa Price introduces the story world perfectly. She starts off with introducing the body bank and the futuristic world. The Spore wars are mentioned a little, but is not explained thoroughly. Anyone have any idea why Enders are rich while Starters are poor?? And why are Starters so disrespected?

Alexisfun I believe this book is in first person narrative. I think the author wrote this book in first person view to make the reader wonder about the different characters. Also to make the book sound nature and not awkward. Furthermore, it makes the book more intense and more realistic, and lets the reader completely see the main characters feelings through out the course of the book.

Alexisfun What mood does the writer establish in any given scene?
In the scene when Callie wakes up and she opens the curtains in her room but there is no window and when she tries to open the door but it is locked from the outside. This scene made me feel confused, worried and scared. It was like they were trying to trap her and steal her body for the bank. He established this mood by making it be very quiet and all you can hear is the hum of an office building. The setting and imagery is very Eire. It makes you think that someone is trying to use her or hunt her down. KInd of like a part of a horror movie right before a jump scare happens.

Bonner Rebecca wrote: "Lissa Price introduces the story world perfectly. She starts off with introducing the body bank and the futuristic world. The Spore wars are mentioned a little, but is not explained thoroughly. Any..."

I thought that the Enders wealth is a result of an extended life span. They are living to be hundreds of years old, and with time comes experience and knowledge. And I assume, that banking investments would only grow exponentially and therefore their wealth would continue to grow too. Also, with the laws past in the book, it mentioned that the Enders were taking more of the jobs that, in our time, would go to young people. Thus, solidifying their stance in society at the top and the bottom. squeezing out the potential for Starters to better themselves.

at least that's what I thought. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer and are blamed for their own failings. therefore the Starters are viewed at "lesser" than. Almost like a Cast system.

Rebecca When identifying tone we are taught to identify the speaker and the subject of the passage first, then the tone. So when I was figuring out the tone when Callie originally woke up at the bar I figured out:

- Callie is talking
-She is talking about the club she is in
-She is confused and the tone is confused because not only is she confused but she makes the reader confused to by not giving the reader all of the information (omission), word choice, punctuation and mood
-It is important to understand the tone because it allows the reader to feel like the character feels or makes the reader want to keep reading
-Also understanding the tone lets you fully understand and follow the book

Rebecca Today's questions:
1. What parts of your story determine its genre?
2.What makes your book fit its genre?
3.What is real and what is fiction in your book?

My answers:
1.Setting, POV, Character, and Plot/Conflict
2.The setting is ultra modern, has new technology, people live longer, and terms built into the world and the characters + the plot/conflict revolves around the technology
3.The new technology and history is fake while some of the jobs and items are the same along with other historic events

Rebecca Today's questions are:
1.Find a part of the novel that is left ambiguous(not explained). 2.Describe what is ambiguous and why you think the writer left this part unclear.
1.When Callie blacks out/when the renter takes control of her everything the renter does is left ambiguous
2.The reader has no idea what the renter did while she was in control of Callie and how it will effect the story
The writer left this part unclear to keep the reader guessing and reading and to keep Callie wondering what happened and make Callie make her decisions without all of the knowledge of what happened. The writer also wants to make the book more intense

Rebecca Today we have more questions about the world in Starters and more answers:
Where in time does the storyworld exist? In a distant future
Where in the universe does the storyworld exist? Beverly Hills on Earth
What is the history of my storyworld? How did it come to this moment? Earth has gone through the “spore wars” which was a chemical, disease where other countries sent over disease bombs. kids and old people were given vaccines first, so all middle aged people died
What does the world look like physically and geographically? Some buildings (most are tall) are run down and abandoned, others are the same as usual except they have new technology that doesn't exist now
What specific sets will host the action? The bodybank, clubs, restaurants, and Helen and Callie’s “houses”

What social classes exist? Enders are upper class (they can work) and Starters are lower class (they can't work)
What does society look like in my world? Enders hate starters and most starters don’t have an education
What is the geography/landscape of my world? mostly buildings although it is mentioned that forests and undeveloped areas still exist
What laws exist? Do people follow them? What types of crime happen? Starters can't work but the Body Bank hires them and pays them anyway and Starters squat in buildings and rob people, you are not allowed to leave the US
What is the government like in my world?Government is made up of Enders that have no concern for Starters
What type of education does a person get? After the Spore wars Starters had to pay for education
What is considered a luxury? lots of food, super truffles and technology along with big houses
What are typical family dynamics? Whoever has a Ender grandparent is okay but Starters who don’t are on their own
What types of people live in my world? Enders and Starters, Old and Young
What’s possible? People can control someone and that person has no idea what they did
What types of entertainment exist? Holos are movies
What are the future prospects of my world?new tech, food and new dieses/history
What kind of technology exists in my world? holograms and artificial smells, new household appliances along with other things, and life span is longer
What foods do people eat in my world? SUPER TRUFFLES

Alexisfun Describe the choices the character is faced with as a result of the story world.
In the book starters Callie is faced with a huge decision that will impact the story entirely. She is forced to choose between staying with the people she love or doing something that is risky for the people she loves. Callie has to decide if she should go to Prime Destinations to get money for her loved ones or stay with them. The story world is a result to this because of the state for living that the characters face. The consequences of her decision to go to Prime lead her into a “epidemic” of life and death.

Madisonsquaregordon Why did you do that Alex?

Rebecca today's question is:

What does a decision your character makes reveal to you about her?
My answer:
Callie faces the choice of either killing the senator or letting the senator live. Callie choose to not shoot the senator :( This shows that Callie is trusting, naive, and doubtful

Feel free to give your opinion

Alexisfun How does your novel end? Analyze the writer’s decision.

The Novel Starters ends off by the evil building of the body bank goes down into ashes and dust. The Body bank is symbolic image but not in a good way. The Body Bank is responsible for the lives of thousands/ The author makes the ending good for a few reasons. First he lets the “heroes” win by destroying the body bank, which is an obvious cliche ending. But before the body bank is destroyed the author leaves some ambiguity at the end to. In the end the old man is talking to Callie through the neurochip. After he leaves she hears her father's distress signal. This makes you wonder if her father is still alive.

Sebastian The writer ends this novel by having somebody in Callie’s head saying the exact words that her father said in his voice. This makes you doubt if her father is actually dead. The ending isn’t too good because in this story I would prefer to have everything be resolved in the end.

Rebecca Today is the last day and the question is:

How does your novel end? Analyze the writers decision.

I feel that:
In this ending one door closes and another one opens. Callie finally stops the body bank, but she starts to suspect that her father is still alive. This makes the reader satisfied that the conflict is resolved in the way they wanted it to be, but want to read more because of the interesting new conflict.
