A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trailby Bill Bryson
pp. 274
4 ★ ★ ★ ★ stars

One of the noteworthy things about Bill Bryson is that he is funny and that clearly shows through in his book A Walk in the Woods. So much of what he has to say about hiking rings true as anyone who has been on a hike or a camp out for that matter. The joy of a motel, with a shower are as heavenly he describes it.

When Bill Bryson moved back to the US, after living years in Great Britain, he came up with the idea of hiking the length of the Appalachian Trail. He tried to talk anyone and everyone into accompanying him and finally an old and very out of shape friend named Stephen Katz agreed. Their adventure begins by Katz tossing out many necessities to lighten the load and from that point the reader is happy to tag along on their lengthy excursion.

But Bryson is not all humor, the reader learns many interesting and entertaining facts about bears, the trail, hiking equipment, history, earth science, the changing face of the woods in America, environmental issues, endangered and extinct animals and natural disasters.

I'd happily recommend the book to anyone interested in travel or humor.

This was also a delightful read for me too; I actually felt like I was with them. Waiting to get the dvd from a friend who loved that, too.

Beth | 3 comments This book was a lot of fun, some of it laugh out loud. I'd heard the movie wasn't as good. Has anyone seen it?

A friend and her grandson really enjoyed the film.

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments I am reading a walk from Seattle to Key West, but seem to have started in book 4.. A Step of Faith by Richard Paul Evans . Held up by a medical problem, and the walk from St Louis is about to start. Simple style, not bad. Doubt if I will read the preceding books, tho.

Blueberry (blueberry1) I listened to A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail in the car with one of my sons many years back. We both enjoyed it but I remember fast forwarding through some of the historical political parts.
