Zippergirl When you see a book you think you're going to like, you check out the cover, the synopsis or blurb, and maybe the author info.

When you jump to the reviews do you read the five stars first? Or head for the bottom of the pile first?

Me? I go for the low reviews to see what it is readers disliked about the book. I figure, I *know* what the good reviews are going to say, so surprise me.

The bottom reviews usually get right to the point: numerous typos, misogyny, animal abuse, no discernible plotline, cliff hanger.

Strangely, sometimes it's what they hate that I find a plus, lol. Bad language? Not a problem. Too descriptive? I'm okay with that. Immoral behavior? Bring it on.

I look for authors with whom I am familiar, but will also pay attention to the blurb/synopsis. I usually read the low reviews, like you, to see what the perceived problems were and decide if those are issues for me or not. I also rely on recommendations from readers--friends, Facebook friends, and Goodreads groups.
