This thread is for discussion of all of the Old Man's War book.

What would you say if you were to describe this to a friend?
Would you read more Scalzi?
What rating did you give it?
Did you think there was a good pay-off at the end?
Would you continue the series?

Overall this was a fun page-turner that kept my attention the whole way.

I felt like the 1st half and 2nd half were two completely different novels. The first had a lot of human interaction and explored some interesting concepts of the CDF. While the second half was 10% character interaction and 90% pew pew... ships exploding... sad-last-lines-from-dead-friends.

I'll continue the series eventually. Maybe read book 2 by the end of the year, I've heard good things about Redshirts from a reliable friend, so I might try that first.

This is short, fun and a breeze to read. The first half of the book had me laughing till my sides hurt. But it got more serious when the real fighting begins and questions of morality/humanity surfaces. It gave me some Ender's Game vibes by then.

While not being a stand-alone, the ending was still somewhat anticlimactic for me. I will probably continue with the series later on. Gave it 4-stars.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than locked in, the story flowed better and the humour was on point. I think that I will continue with the series to see where the story goes.

I will also likely continue the series as some point since I thought the premise and world was interesting and I'd like things to resolve of John and Jane.

As morbid as it sounds- I really loved the crazy deaths... I liked that in Redshirts too (@Emmett; it think it is a worthy read - although the 3 Codas at the end are a bit choppy). I mean the slime going in your mouth and destroying you from within was intense. You think it is just plain ol' gross slime - turns out it is nefarious ol' gross slime.

I really liked this book a lot! I thought it was so creative and imaginative. It also brought up great ideas to explore such as what makes a person human, their unique configuration of DNA or the combination of experiences and memories they have. Also I think this series has such great potential for introducing even more awesome space technology and mysteries.
