Which do you prefer? Series or a Single Book?
Discuss the merits and downfalls of each. Personally I like series! I love discovering the worlds and seeing the characters develop. . . but then the series ends and in enters the mourning period.
What do you think?

Yelena Lugin (ylugin) | 413 comments I love whatever is a good story!
Usually I like a Series because I don't like a story to end.... especially if I love it.
And pretty much all the books I find and read are a part of a series.

Jess | 29 comments I usually prefer single books because... well, you know, it's cheaper. Or sometimes I bought the last book and I hate the ending and it just ruins the whole series for me. But if I had the money I would happily spend it on a good series once in a while :D

Series are more fun and interesting.

Agreed.

Stand-alones leave you unsatisfied.

Stefani (skanzler) | 6 comments I personally love a series... The longer the better. It makes for a much more immersive experience. You get to learn more about the characters & the world & I feel it makes for a better reading experience.
However I have to say one thing stand-alones have going for them is you don't have to wait for what seems forever for the next book in the series to come out.

Meabh (Bookish Meanderings) I enjoy both but series gets my vote. Always find I get way more involved with the characters and the story in a series. The downside is waiting for the next book to come out so I tend to only start a series when the most of them are already out! (After waiting a good 10 years to finish robert jordan's wheel of time! And I only started it when book 8 was out! And then he dies before finishing!)
Trilogys are my favourite... not as much commitment as a long series but more satisfying then a stand alone book

Definitely series! You don't have to let go of characters you love so quickly, and you can be even more invested in the story. Series with novellas are yhe best because there's just so much to read and learn about the story, and if you ginish all the main books you'll at least have something! :D

message 19: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (victoriammd) I usually prefer a series if the book is fantastic because that way you get a much better look at the universe created by the other. Otherwise I don't really care as long as the book is thought through.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I think it depends on what genre the book. Fantasy I like series because then the story isn't rushed and there can be more world and character building. I think for contemporary standalones are better. The only problem with series is that sometimes authors take it upon themselves to make the drama drag on and on. That I hate.

I totally agree with you!

message 22: by Phoenix2 (new)

Phoenix2 For me, its either, though if the book is too good, its a same that there won't be another one. But, then again, some sequels simply distroyed the first book.

message 23: by Anny (new)

Anny (annyreads) I mean... it depends. I hate finishing a book that I know has no sequel and feeling like...I WANT MORE. I absolutely hate that feeling because all these "oh if you liked this then you will like these too" lists online are always so far off it makes me want to scream. At the same time, sometimes a series is too time consuming, I'm extremely busy with work and studies so I rarely have time to read and, honestly, do most of my reading in the bathroom. Sometimes I just want something casual. Sometimes I want to delve deep into another universe. I'd say both, really :)
