NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

message 3: by NBRC Travel Agent (last edited Feb 01, 2016 06:51PM) (new)

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in Trinidad and Tobago, or by TT authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Port of Spain or Trinidad and Tobago

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as trilogy - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable"

Sally906 | 1765 comments OUR ITINERARY

Have settled on doing detours for stages 1, 2, 5, 6, and 8

1. St Croix Island (VI) - Port of Spain [Trinidad and Tobago] (TT)
Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as trilogy - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable

2. Port of Spain (TT) – Leon [Nicaragua](ES)
Read a book with a child on the cover

3. Leon (ES) - Kemi/Tornio [Finland] (FI)
Read a book where the title starts with the letter Q

4. Kemi/Tornio (FI) – Shymkent [Kazakhstan](KZ)
Read a book that has a predominately scarlet and gold cover.

5. Shymkent (KZ) - Hervey Bay [Australia] (AU)
Read a book where a character lives in a city

6. Hervey Bay (AU) - Kona [USA – Hawaii] (US)
Read a book with the word magic, sorcery, enchant or divine (plurals are acceptable) in the title

7. Kona (US) - Valdivia [Chili](CL)
Read a book where the author uses a suffix (Jr, Sr., III)

8. Valdivia (CL) - St Croix Island [Virgin Islands](VI)
Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter D

Choose between:
TASK
The task to complete at each stop is determined by the team. The team can either:
(a) Read books set in that country or by an author of that country, or
(b) Complete a spell-it-out of that country or city

or

DETOUR
A "detour" may be chosen at each stop by the team instead of completing a task.
• Each team will be able to do a maximum of 5 detours over the course of the challenge
• A detour requires at least 4 members of the team to complete that goal before the detour is considered complete.

Jo-Jo | 686 comments Hi teammates! I'm Joanne. *waves* It's nice to meet you all and I'm happy to be doing a challenge with you all.

The way I understand it, we are only allowed to do a total of 5 detours during the entire challenge so it would probably make sense for us to decide which 5 we think would be the easiest for everyone to do. The more people that complete a task for each stop the more points we earn, so if we all can read each of the detours when we use them then we get more points.

In my opinion, the easiest ones would be the ones for stops:

1, 2, 5, 6, and 8

However, some of you may feel different ones are easiest. I am flexible so will be happy to do whatever.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone here is new to challenges or Goodreads, but I thought this info may help if anyone doesn't know about it (I just learned it myself in the last month or so):

Let's say we decide to do the detour for this stop - Stop 1
which means we need to do the task:

"Read a book shelved (listed on the first page of the "top shelves" of the book) as trilogy - plurals and minor spelling variations are acceptable"

I found that you can go to Explore at the top of the screen and then click on Genre...from there type trilogy into the box at the top of the screen and books that are shelved as trilogy will come up. Then you just have to make sure that when you pick a certain book that when you click on the top shelves from that book's(the one you picked) page that "trilogy" is on the first page of top shelves- basically meaning that it was shelved enough times to appear on the first page of top shelves. I hope I explained that clearly, but if I didn't feel free to ask for clarification.

Another thing we need to think about is a Team Name. If anyone has any ideas feel free to share...I haven't really put a lot of thought into it yet.

Okay, I guess now I'll wait and see what everyone else feels about what we should do for Stop #1. =)

My vote is to Detour as I feel it will be one of the easier ones to do...there are a lot of trilogies and even if you aren't in the middle of one, starting a new series is always fun. Then all 8 of us can do it and get the max points for it...instead of there being 11 books needing read for spelling-out Port of Spain with 3 people having to read 2 books.

Sally906 | 1765 comments Hi Joanne

I'm about to start the second book in a trilogy in the next day or so - so will put off until we decided. Sounds like you know the tricks - always good to learn from an experienced person :)

To be honest I am still reading the instructions - LOL!!!

Around the World with a Book!!!

Have a good rest of the day at work! bummer that lunch break's over.
I'm in the USA, btw- it's 11pm here right now.

Tally (tallyrrn) Looking at our itinerary, I agree with that detours for 1,2,5,6,8 would be easiest. I'm still figuring everything out as I'm new to both GoodReads and challenges/communities. Thank you so much for that explanation Joanne! It's very helpful :)

I'm also in the USA but it's about 9PM for me

Sally906 | 1765 comments Our Itinerary (because I can't access the spreadsheet at work)

0possum Thanks Joanne for the intro. It was helpful and no doubt I'll need more goodreads/challenge navigation help during our travels. I' m fine with any name. The only one I thought up was tome raiders but a group already had book raiders so Around the World With a Book that Sally suggested works for me. the detour also sounds fine. I'll need to find a new trilogy -sounds fun! I'm in the U.S. Near DC so eastern time. Too late for me to be here.

Jo-Jo | 686 comments Sally906 wrote: "Don't waste a detour on 5 - Harvey Bay is Australia - there are heaps and heaps of Australian authors readily available around the world - I reckon use it for 7 - Chili"

If we don't use a detour for #5, the next easiest ones in my mind would be 4(primarily scarlet and gold cover) or 7(an author uses a suffix(Jr, Sr, III, etc). I agree with you, Sally, that there are plenty of Australian authors to choose from so it would be a good idea to use the detour on one that is more difficult to find stuff for.

So, at this point it sounds like the 4 of us who've checked in so far are in agreement about doing the Detour for stop 1... and Around the World with a Book is the top contender for team name so far. Now we just need to see what the rest of the team thinks about everything and if any other members put name ideas in the hat.

Hi Tally and Opossum! Nice to meet you. I've only been doing Goodreads for about 7 - 8 months now but have picked up a couple little tricks along the way. If you guys ever have any questions and I'm able to help I will. If I don't know an answer to something I will try to find someone who can answer it for us. With all of us working together, I'm sure we can figure out most things...8 brains definitely are better than 1. =)

Jo-Jo | 686 comments Tome Raiders was a great idea! I love the play on words involved, very clever. I was trying to play with things like First Class Fliers and Tome Travelers (like Time Travelers)...but didn't think they were very good so was shy to share them. It's hard coming up with clever ideas for names. But since others are putting their ideas out there...

I still like Around the World with a Book best personally.

message 17: by Tally (new)

Tally (tallyrrn) Ha Tome Raiders! Love it! I was trying to think of something of a play on words like that but I can't, I'm not very good at thinking of names D:

I'm fine with Around the World with a Book. I forgot to mention last night I also thought Sally's other idea 12 Readers Travelling was cute since we're team 12~

Oh well, going to have to make a change. I have Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater checked out too and it will work for this, so that's the one.

Lory | 629 comments hi everyone!

This is my first foray into challenges, so I also may need a bit of help :-)

I am not picky on names and am still a bit confused about the detours, but am ready to join in!

If I understand correctly, I need to pick a trilogy that has been shelved as a trilogy (on the first page) it also can't be one we have already read, correct? i was looking at doing, the All Souls Trilogy. The first page is shelved as All Souls Trilogy. Would this work?

Also, this might have been covered and I missed it, but how is it known when the challenge/detour is completed.

Thanks for all the help and I promise my questions will become fewer! I am looking forward to some new book adventures!

message 29: by 0possum (new)

0possum Phew (wipes brow) I didn't realize it'd be so difficult to: find a book in a trilogy that I have access to that is shelved as a trilogy on the first page of the shelves. It's Inkspell by Cornelia Funke and perhaps once I hang out here a bit longer I'll bother to read how to do a goodreads link. My kids had two of this series and I only read the first one eons ago.

I think when I first signed up years ago, I started to create shelves but didn't finish setting my account and everything up. I suspect with this challenge I'll be spending some more time over here and maybe I'll get a bit more organized.

I sort of like Tome Travelers as well as Around the World with a Book but I am fine with any name.

Lory -I'm a bit confused as well. I hope I have more time this evening to sort through all the documentation. But I have my trilogy book and am ready to start.

I respond to Ann as well as 0possum :)

message 30: by Tally (new)

Tally (tallyrrn) So I just went back to the info page and I think the detour is complete when we've all finished reading our books? Then we tally our points and let the mods know. After that we can move to our next destination.

But they have a little line that says "There is no time limit to this challenge, but the minimum time is 8 weeks (8 stops). Your team may chose to take longer at each stop - it is up to you!" So we can be flexible if needed. I don't yet have my trilogy book but as soon as I get it I'll start!

I'm not sure about this! Sometimes challenge leaders get picky on embedded words. I'm thinking they are looking for just "trilogy" or "trilogies". I would send a message to the Mod and get it approved. The first message in our thread has the mod name - if you go to their profile you can send them a message :)

when it says "on the first page of top shelves as "trilogy"" What it means is, when you go to a books main page...let's use Shiver as an example...scroll down and on the right hand side you'll see a list of genres...directly beneath the list of genres you'll see a link that says "See top shelves..."...Click on that "See top shelves" link and if trilogy or trilogies is on that first page then you can use it for this. That's what it means by shelved on the first page of top shelves. Hope that helps!

p.s. I included the link for Shiver so that you can click on it and then scroll down to see where it has the Genres and "See Top Shelves" link.

Jacki included a link for Popular books shelved as trilogy which should help...after picking one you still need to go and make sure that trilogy or trilogies is on the first page of the Top Shelves...that isn't the actual main page for the book, but the first page after you click on "See top shelves". I only just learned this myself during the last Team Challenge a few months ago so I'm happy to pass on the knowledge that others helped me with, especially if it helps someone.

message 38: by Jo-Jo (last edited Feb 02, 2016 09:55PM) (new)

Jo-Jo | 686 comments Here is a link for Popular Books Shelved as as Trilogies as well...that way we have the plural covered too and it might give more options:

Shelved as Trilogies

Shelved as Trilogy

Went on and added the Trilogy one too so they are both in the same place. That was a great idea Jacki! Good thinking. =)

Jo-Jo | 686 comments Erika wrote: "Hiiiiii

Yeah, I think so. It's really should be a consensus of what all of us would like to do though. We would get the most points for doing all 5 of the Detours at some point along the trip because they are supposed to be more difficult. This means that we need to come together as a team and figure out which ones we feel would be best to do...whether it's because we feel they are easier or because we feel finding author's for a particular stop might be easier...it's a balance of sorts. Like we thought 5 would be an easy Detour but it's also easy to find Australian authors so we were thinking maybe we should do the detour for stop 4 or 7 instead of 5.

The Points work out this way:

Points

TASKS
◈ Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

DETOURS
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

So for Tasks we can earn a maximum of 35 points a week and Detours we can earn a maximum of 50 points in a week, but we are only allowed to do 5 detours during the whole trip.

This is how I'm understanding it at least.

Wanderlusting Around the World with a Book

message 41: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 1765 comments So if we do the detour now - and all 8 of us read a trilogy - we
will earn

15 points for 7 members reading
10 points for all of us reading

lol, I read it wrong. You're right, it's 50 points for a detour and 35 for the tasks. ;) Glad you did the math cuz I sure didn't haha

In an effort for more creativity and smaller names I (well, google) came up with:

- Wanderful Pages or Wanderful Books
- Off the Beaten Page

Other names mentioned above:

- Around the World with A Book
-Wanderlusting Around the World with a Book OR Around the World with Wanderlust
- 12 readers travelling
- Tome Raiders (this is great - but there already is a Book Raiders)
- Tome Travelers
- First Class Fliers

I think I caught most of them. Lets take a vote and name our expedition!
