This was a very well done audio. With all the foreign place names and people, it was very helpful because I'm quite sure I would have known the correct pronunciations! It's what I love best about audio.

The Levi family have three sons, each of them very talented; the architectural student, medical student, and performer. Mr and Mrs Levi have a wonderful backstory also. But life in Hungary is changing, Hitler is pressuring Europe. As a history major with a father who served during WWII, I was always interested in that time period. I never heard or understood what happened in Hungary. This was very eye-opening.

Throughout this story, the danger builds. The Jews of Hungary were often decorated soldiers from the first World War, but this war is so very different. At one point the phrase "blind hope" is used and it seemed so appropriate, I want to use it here for those times when I too had blind hope for the characters' situation. So often, the characters seemed to be in a safe bubble, then things would get dangerous. Back and forth, always a little worse after each bump in the road but you hope for the best, for their survival. It gets more and more difficult to keep your hope up. There are some wonderful, surprising people that bring light to the story. I'm not likely to forget this story and these characters.

I thought this was an interesting look at the war in Hungary. I don't think I realized how they were aligned with Germany and agree with you that it was very eye opening.

Good to hear! I wish there was a like button on GR, just as I did on Shelfari. :-)

This book is still on my TBR shelf. I am glad that it was a 5 star book for you.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I didn't read your review because I am about ready to start this for this month's tag! However, it's great to see all the stars since it's a long book which sometimes intimates me :-D I will be reading, not listening.

It is a big one but I love doing the audio for times I can't read but I can listen. Have you followed the Whispersync thread? That might help you make the leap! It fits this month tag (hint, hint) and is a totally new look at WWII .
