One of my very favorite things to do is recommend a book. I just love sharing my love of a book or author with someone else. I especially love getting feedback on those suggestions, even if they didn't like it. It's just an excuse to recommend a different book, right?!

This month we're going to challenge you to take up a book that someone has recommended to you. Maybe it's one that is right in your reading comfort zone, maybe it is waaaaay outside of it. Either way, give the book a chance and be sure tell the recommender what you thought!

Don't have a recommendation? Don't worry, the library has a list of staff picks right on our webpage www.saclibrary.org plus more lists on our Great Reads page http://www.saclibrary.org/Home/Great-... You can even make a request for a Personalized Reading Recommendation from that Great Reads page! Maybe a few posters here might be able to recommend a book too!

As always, one lucky poster this month will win an advance readers copy of a book.

Happy reading!

I've gotten several recommendations lately so I'll be looking at some and deciding what one looks best to me!

I would make a recommendation to any Fantasy fans out there to read The Name of the Wind if you haven't already. My absolute favorite book of all time, it's story is so in depth and has so many puzzles in it that it's a great brain teaser. If you can get the audio book, I just listened to it last month and was blown away by the narration.

I don't usually ask for book recommendations, since my "to read" list is so long. But I do try and read all of the titles that the ALT Library selects. This month, I'm reading When She Woke.

The recommendation I make to anyone who is looking for a "good" book is Ready Player One. It's just a fantastic piece of (science) fiction and I enjoyed it VERY much. Also, check out Roller Girl if you're a fan of graphic novels :)

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments I *just* got notification that Ready Player One is available for me to download! That was recommended last month. And, speaking of recommendations, I read Girl Waits with Gun based on a suggestion from Brendle and loved it!

I'm usually busy telling everyone to read whatever I've read last so asking for recommendations will be fun. Sacramento Library just suggested a book called Waking Up White for my bookclub so I'm going to go with that. I think it will be beyond my comfort zone (with a nod to last month) and an interesting read as well.

I posted this challenge earlier this week, but am just now getting around to selecting a book to read. I've got two to choose from. One is Hammer Head: the making of a carpenter by Nina McLaughlin which I saw on a couple of 2015 best non-fiction book lists and which was also highly recommended by a couple of podcasts that I listen to. It's the memoir of a journalist who rather abruptly and impulsively changed careers by answering an ad to become an apprentice carpenter. The second book is Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway, a genre bending book described as noir meets absurdist comedy. It was also a recommendation from a podcast. They both sound so interesting, I don't know which to read! Maybe I'll just read both!

I finished the first of my recommended books, Hammer Head by Nina McLaughlin this past weekend. It's a short, fast read that I liked very much. I don't read a lot of memoirs so this was something of a reading challenge for me. I appreciated her desire for the satisfaction of making something concrete with physical labor. I also appreciated her bravery in trying something completely new. I was a little unsure, however, of her attempts to tie literature with the carpentry, but it did make for great points to consider for further thought or discussion. On the whole, it's a book I would definitely recommend to others.

How is everyone else doing with their recommended books?

Susan (yetanothersusan) | 203 comments Finished Ready Player One over the weekend. SO GOOD!!! It took me a little longer to read it than expected because I kept trying to tell my husband and son bits about the book.

So, as February was winding down, I picked up the second of the recommended books I was going to try this month, Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway. I almost immediately put it down again. It was not a bad book. I believe it is a book that I will enjoy--especially since it's now been recommended by two people whose opinions I trust. However, this was, in my opinion, one of those right book, wrong time situations. For whatever reason, I simply could not focus on the writing style. So I put the book down and made a note to myself to pick it up again another time. Ah well. Luckily I do have plenty of other books to read!

I can add my voice to the recommendations on this one. I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of the sequel, A Gathering of Shadows which is coming out this month.
