War and Remembrance question

I purchased the two volumes of Herman Wouk's WWII story and I seem to be missing something. After finishing volume #1, I started to read volume #2 and realized that a lot of the story was missing. Both volumes were published by the same publisher, but volume #2 starts with Chapter 50. And it seems a good part of the story was missing. For example, Pug's oldest son was apparently killed in battle but there's no mention of that happening or any discussion of the Battle of Midway.

Can anyone who's read this please help me understand why this is?
