Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments Hi everyone,

I am hoping some of you will join me in a side read and discussion of One Hundred Years of Solitude, the joint winner of the vote for February's Group Read.

A quick tip if you enjoy listening to audiobooks - the price has just dropped to £3.99 at Audible.co.uk.

Lene I just got my copy from Audible, too! Looking forward to it :-)

Zach (zwsilva) | 4 comments Yes! Glad we are doing this a a side read. One year shy of the 50-year requirement, and one vote shy of being the main read!

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments Hi Stephanie,

It's a Side Read to February's main choice, Wuthering Heights, so we will begin discussing it here as soon as we finish reading it - in my case, probably at the start of next week. :-)

Travis | 2 comments This has been on my "to read" list forever. l'll start it this weekend. Thanks for the thread.

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments Yay, that's great! :-D

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments In case I'm not the only one getting confused by all the similar (and in some cases, identical) names - here's a helpful overview of the various characters and generations from SparkNotes: http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/solitud...

Zach (zwsilva) | 4 comments How is everyone doing? I'm about 200 pages in – it has been a bit difficult to keep track of everything and everyone, but I love Marquez's writing.

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments Yes, I totally agree - the names are very confusing, but it is fascinating to see how history repeats itself.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments Boy, and I thought Middlesex was bad about the inbreeding! At least they all had different names. I'm glad for the family tree at the beginning!

Simon (sorcerer88) | 108 comments This is not the right thread, but the question is good. I opened a thread for nominations for August:

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments I never give up on a book, but I came dangerously close with this one... I can't believe my optimism back in February, as I have only just managed to finish it! I think choosing the audiobook was a big mistake, the narrator John Lee makes everything sound so sarcastic. I kept having to pause the recording to wonder how my perception of a character would have been different if their lines were read in a normal voice. All the men having really slow bass voices and all the women sounding like they were permanently on the brink of hysteria got old quite quickly... I gave the book two stars in the end - based on my experience of it, I would probably have given it one star, but I knew I would have liked it better had I read the book myself or listened to another narrator, so I gave my review an extra star to make up for that. Has anyone else finished it? What did you think?

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments I finished. it was difficult to get through. One of those "I'm glad I can say I read it but I'd never read it again" books.

Nina (ninaelin) | 21 comments That's exactly it!

Jan Notzon | 53 comments I started it in the past, then put it down. Don't know if I'll ever try again.
