"A Year And A Day In Old Theradane" by Scott Lynch

Lynch is best known for his "Gentlemen Bastard" series (The Lies of Locke Lamora). This is a sword and sorcery heist story, separate from the Gentleman Bastard stories. Though it could perhaps be set in the same universe, it doesn't overlap any characters.
In the story, a retired thief in a thaumatocracy is forced out of retirement to serve a ruling mage in a power struggle. Witty, straightforward narration of an adventure story. ***1/2*
