OK this prologue is deep. I had to set it down and think stuff through. Wow, My brain hurts. lol

OK so more dreams. Shireen dreams dragons were coming to eat her. Dreams are so important in this series as we have stated before.

Stannis's vessel is the "Fury" and I thought that was a cool name. Then I looked it up and the Baratheon sigil is "Ours is the Fury". So What a great name for a boat.

I am likely one of the only people who likes Stannis. He is not a nice boy. I like bad boys.

Davos is missing fingers. I am unclear on why Stannis did this to him. I tried to read up on it but still don't get it. Enlighten me please.

re: Stannis and Cressen discussing allies. Stannis should have considered a little harder teaming up with Renly. Bad mistake. Renly as far as I can see has no real right to the throne. Stannis is being stubborn and selfish.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Davos was basically a pirate/smuggler, and he helped Stanis during this long seige. Stanis I think was trapped and his people were starving. Davos is called the onion Knight, because he smuggled onions and other foods to Stanis. Piracy is illegal, but Stanis is a fair man and Davos deeds do not go unpunished. Hence the msising fingers.

So he basically punished him and then moved on from it?

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Basically. Davos thinks it is a good punishment, because he did do "wrong". Stannis could have taken his life. Davos calls his fingers luck and carries them.

Stannis is being selfish, but I think he feels like he is always second or third best. No one is really fond of him and Renly looks like Robert and acts like him. I think he wants to prove to everyone he should have been the only choice and that is why Melisandre is there. And she is just I don't know what to think.

The dreams are very important, the wolves, and the gods.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I was thinking about the fingers, and what they might symbolize, but I don't want to go too far ahead of the book. George is pretty clever.

Okay, so I just started the prologue and had to stop due to it getting too dark. Only got a few pages into it since I am traveling in the car. Anyway, I have a thought. Shireen has dragon dreams. Danny has dragon dreams. Could Shireen be a Targaryen and not a Baratheon? Maybe Stannis had an affair with a Targaryen. Just wondering.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Ohhhh that is interesting! I have a hard time believing Stannis would cheat though not saying the wife (can't recall her name) couldn't have. Hmm.

message 10: by Brendan (new)

Brendan | 133 comments Mod
Or Stannis' wife has Targaryen blood from a previous generation.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Then just maybe. Hmm. Interesting. Interesting. I have a theory then!!! Not sure if this is the time or place to say it.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Funny how the little things can make the most sense. And I never paid attention the first time reading it.

message 13: by Ria (new)

Ria (ban1chka) | 440 comments Damn. Stannis is a whiny stubborn pain in the ass. He reminds me of this English teacher at my school who is probably older than some discovered fossils, NEVER smiles and is just so rude to everybody. She's like "Wow, you're all so dumb, wtf are you doing in 11th grade? You there, girl, yes, you! Stop laughing! You can't read two sentences in English!" (that last part is an almost literal quote of something she said to a straight-A student in my class who she's never met before and who can definitely read more than two sentences in English) She's so horrible I feel like I should apologise to Stannis for making this connection... Anyway. My heart goes out to maester Cressen. That was so painful to read. The fool's story, too, poor boy. This chapter reminds me so much of Assassin's Apprentice. I think I got screwed up while reading that book because now every time I see the word "fool" I will think about the Fool. But it was the whole atmosphere that reminded me of Hobb's work. The cold, the sea, the lack of humour (*coughs*Stannis*coughs*)...

As far as ShwhateverStannis'sdaughter'snamewas (I suck at names) goes, I doubt she has Targaryen blood in her. Yes, GRRM is a pro at giving subtle hints, but one dream isn't enough for me. I think she just senses that the dragons are coming. Or I'm wrong. Ha! Stannis raising a Targaryen. What a funny notion. I'd never have seen that coming.

PS. I'd totally forgotten about the red comet. I love how every character has a different theory about it.

Ria your pic looks great!

Your teacher sounds awful. Hopefully she soon retires. Well that or else falls and breaks a hip and has to miss work.

About Shireen and thoughts about possibly being Targaryen, please only open this if you are caught up to the show or read all the books: (view spoiler)

Ooh! A new location!
"Grim places needed lightening, not solemnity, and Dragonstone was grim beyond a doubt..."
Patchface kind of reminds me of Robert Arryn (Lysa's son). They both have some sort of shaking disease. I'm also quite intrigued by him. I'm curious about what happened to him in the water.
I like Shireen. She seems her age (unlike a lot of the other kids).
"his low birth written plain upon a common face." So rich people/nobility look better?
Who are the storm lords?
I feel like a lot of the issues these guys have all have to do with not getting land they wanted/not being honored enough.
Stannis is kind of jealous methinks!
I can't believe he's considering having his own brother murdered.
That's kind of messed up of them to demean Cressen.
How does she survive the poison!?
A Game of Thrones started with ice and ended with fire so I'm curious if the end of this one is with ice since it sort of started with fire.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 562 comments There really was a lot of information in this chapter so I can only image what's going to happen in this book. I feel like there are probably a lot of hints/foreshadowing and little things we may have missed and will understand when the entire series is over.

Okay so I just finished the Prologue. Boy was there a ton of information in this section!!! First you have to love and feel sorry for Shireen. Poor girl has been through a lot!! Also as the chapter went on I started to feel more and more sorry for Stannis. I mean come on, everything went wrong. He doesn't really love his wife. His girl has a disease. He was skipped as being the Hand for his brother and now his wife has become a cult believer in Milisandra. Cressen is trying his best to do what is right but I can see where it is a hopeless cause. And of course... I CANT STAND MILISANDRA. Found the beginning and end of the chapter great, however the middle felt like it was a chore to get through. Looking forward to the next chapter!!!!!

N'aw, thank you!

She is retired. But there's one teacher in my school who's on maternity leave, so she's substituting her in some classes. She was also substituting my teacher for a few days, when she hurt her hand badly. Thank Odin I don't have to put up with her all the time!

Yeah Brendan it was a bit of a chore for me too. But I walked away for a bit and came back and read on.

I like Stannis.

message 22: by Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition (last edited Mar 07, 2016 05:55AM) (new)

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition Stannis legally should be the next king, but he is not as handsome, popular and charismatic as his younger brother, Renly. Stannis is also morally strict with himself and others, which could be a good thing in a leader, if he wasn't totally enthralled with that evil skank Melissandre. She is appealing to his moralistic side with her new "religion" and he is unconscously drawn to her because she is so manipulative. She definitely has her own agenda of world dominance.
Anyway, Stannis isn't doing himself any favors in the popularity department by switching religions on his people.

Melisandra scares me.

"Anyway, Stannis isn't doing himself any favors in the popularity department by switching religions on his people. " *** good point

message 24: by Vishakha (new)

Vishakha Motwani (vimo) | 150 comments I started this last night, I couldn't help but dislike him (not hate just dislike). It seems like he could have expressed his anger while he was there with Robert. Besides he is not even willing to collaborate with anyone (such an egoist).
The least he could do for maester Cressen was talk politely and consider his opinion. I don't remember Lady Selyse also being so adamant and rude. In between all this Shireen is such a pious character.

I was kind of wondering what's up with Melisandre, what was her history? If she is what they say she is, how come (view spoiler). Read this only if you're caught up on the show.
Of all the people, the power Melisandre comes with, she could've gone to anyone and she chose Stannis? Or Lady Selyse chose her?

Right - That's exactly what I have been thinking about her!
