Books and authors from NFLD and Labrador

Louise | 1171 comments My favorite category!! So many AWESOME writers from Newfoundland.

Bernice Morgan, Michael Crummey, Donna Morrissey, Nicole Lundrigan, Lisa Moore and Kathleen Winter. Anything and everything by all of these writers is an excellent read.

message 3: by Megan (new)

Megan There are probably a million books to list in this category!!

Just finished #CanadaReads book # 4 by Michael Winter and really want to visit NFLD now. It is great that both he and his sister (Kathleen Winter - Annabel) both describe their home province so beautifully - and have both been Canada Reads participants. http://ayearofbooksblog.com/2016/03/1...

I am halfway through Sweetland and had to take a break at a sad part. The descriptions of the geography make me want to take a trip. I was pleased to find a library discard copy and have also been able to add it to my Canadian shelf in my little free library!!

Megan I loved Sweetland! Stick with it. I would love to take a trip to Newfoundland someday....

Megan - you were right. It was a great book. I just needed a break after the nephew went missing. This just reinforces my wish to travel East too!! I found it interesting that like Michael Winter in Minister without Portfolio there were not quotation marks defining the dialogue really blending the thoughts vs. dialogue. Here is my review: https://ayearofbooksblog.com/2016/05/...

Louise | 1171 comments I know a few members are presently (or soon will be) reading Random Passage. In preparation for my trip to Newfoundland, I found out that there is a site open to the public where Random Passage was filmed for the mini-series (which was excellent btw). According to their website: Enjoy a compelling, immersive and experiential journey into the past to learn more about the process of catching and making fish, early education and our affiliation with the sea through a guided tour of the sod houses, church, schoolroom, fish flakes and fishing stage.

I'm going to have to squeeze that into our itinerary!

Louise | 1171 comments I took a little look see into Elaine's Books today (a used bookstore in St John's) and found a whole box of brand new looking Charles Dickens books. A google search revealed them to be the green faux Morrocco leather edition:

Published by Heron Books in 1970 to celebrate 100 years after the death of Dickens, this was a superb complete set of Charles Dickens Works. This set came in three editions, namely the Standard Green Faux Morocco Leather Edition, the De-Luxe Burgundy Soft Faux Calf Leather Edition and the Quarter Brown/Burgundy Full Leather Edition with Gilt Portrait and Dickens Signature To Front Cover.

The novels were illustrated by a mixture of the brilliant work of the original illustrators – Phiz, Tenniel, Cruikshank etc. and some modern contemporary illustrators

That sounds so exciting. I was just in Newfoundland a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I hope to return for the Woody Point Writers Festival some day. Good luck with your literary event; it sounds wonderful.

Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments Plus, I think your collection would count as a book highlighting Canadian nature for our CanLit Bingo 2018 challenge! Added bonus! For that one I actually read another NL book, Black Ice: David Blackwood: Prints of Newfoundland. If you haven't read it I would highly recommend it! Beautiful art.

Allison | 2121 comments I am making my way through Annabel, by Nfld writer Kathleen Winter and I am HOOKED! An amazing story and such strong writing. Stealing moments through the day to sneak it in -- it's been a long time since a book has done that to me!

Agree Allison that Annabel is a wonderful book. Not only is the author from Newfoundland and Labrador but the story takes place there and Kathleen Winter does an amazing job of describing the life and landscape in that provicnce. I read the book when it was first out and nominated for so many awards and yet it feels like I just read it recently. It has stuck with me for many years. I still feel the angst of the principal character and others in the story. Great choice for a book club discussion..

message 35: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2121 comments Yes, @MJ, it is August’s Book Club choice for my real-life group. Can’t wait to discuss it!

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1782 comments Linden MacIntyre's top book picks to mark 70 years since Newfoundland joined confederation on April 1, 1949.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/...

message 38: by Dan (new)

Dan McCarthy | 4 comments Linden MacIntyre’s list was interesting but should have included Greg Malone’s ‘Don’t Tell the Newfoundlanders’ - the story of how the colony at the time was basically swindled and forced into Confederation. It will infuriate even non-Newfoundlanders.
