We had a tie for the Adult group read.

One of the ones that won was The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.

No spoilers in this thread please!

Does anyone know the differences between the original edition and the "author-approved" 2007 version?

I'm contemplating a re-read, and I own a paperback copy, but I know it'll probably get read faster if I have the e-book...

(Just noticed that the "Classic" kindle edition is actually still a copy of the revised 2007 edition, just without the extra story and author interviews in the "deluxe" edition. So it appears the original version isn't available via ebook.)

I just found something else... The follow up short story is apparently available online: http://www.peterbeagle.com/works/shor...

Mary Catelli | 1135 comments The story makes A LOT more sense after the book.

Portia | 36 comments I have the original paperback somewhere in this house. Listens for sneezes followed by trumpets! ;(

Monica Davis I'm next in line at my library for this, so should have it in a couple of weeks.

Checked with 2 libraries and none of the other group selections are in their catalogs. (I only read ebooks from the library.)

Melanti | 2125 comments Mod
Monica - if you have any ability to read Nook books, I can lend you a Nook copy of Unicorn Mountain. No one has taken me up on it yet.

And Lore of the Unicorn is out of copyright so no need to use the library for that. I'll post a link in that thread.

Monica Davis Thanks You, Melanti! No, I don't have Nook. When you have time, I would appreciate the link to The Lore of the Unicorn. I was looking for a copy I can download to my Kindle (pdf or mobi), but I only found a version to read online.

Edit: Just saw the link in the other thread and downloaded The Lore of the Unicorn. Thanks, Melanti!

Michele | 520 comments I love this book, and am so excited we're reading it. I also love the animated version :)

Thanks! It's now on my kindle. Will be April or after before I read it, but I'm looking forward to it.

I have an iPad, but not a Nook or Kindle. Honestly except for short articles, emails or discussions on Facebook or goodreads I don't l like reading anything longer on my iPad.
I've ordered Unicorn Mountain as an interlibrary loan because my library doesn't have it. Hopefully it won't take too long!

You know, I meant to post my previous comment on The Lore of the Unicorn thread! I'm actually not re-reading this one, but will join in on the discussion.

Lol! I just realized I posted in the wrong thread as well. I meant my last post for the Unicorn Mountain discussion!

My library has the Last Unicorn but a very long line ahead of me!

My! Considering it was first published in 1968, I wonder what inspired the interest.

It seems there is only one copy of the Last Unicorn in the entire city of Ottawa's libraries with 11 people ahead of me. It could be worse. I wanted to see the 80s film Labrinth staring David Bowie. I missed it somehow . Netflicks doesn't have it, most of the DVD rental places have shut down and at my library there is a cue of 143 ahead of me!

I bought the DVD a while back -- love David Bowie.

Such a great movie. David Bowie is awesome. Amazon video has it for $2.99, if that's an option for you.

Definitely worth the wait!! Labyrinth is one of my all-time favorites and has been for nearly 30 years. It makes me so happy when my daughter (almost 17) tells me about meeting people from 13 - 23 who also love the movie like we do. She teases that she uses it as a test for whether she can be friends with someone - have you watched Labyrinth? do you LOVE it? lol.

Jim Henson + David Bowie = brilliant!

There's also a wait for The Last Unicorn at my library, so I expect I won't get to start it till first or second week in April.

Great to find so many David Bowie fans here! Leah that's funny about your daughter using it as a test!
Yes, I am very much looking forward to seeing Labrinth!

Speaking of movies, I mentioned my library also has a cue for the book The Last Unicorn but the movie is available now!

If I see the movie first will it spoil the book for me?

The movie follows the book very well, as Peter S. Beagle wrote the screen play for it. So if you are someone who doesn't like major plot points "spoiled," then it would be best to hold off until you read the book. However, I think the beauty in "The Last Unicorn" is not so much the plot but the lyrical language and its themes, so when it comes to those, it's just a matter of where you want to experience those things first.

I saw the movie when I was just a little girl and grew up on it, then read the book when I was 16. I absolutely loved the book even though I already knew what was going to happen, and reading the book made me love the movie more. How often does that happen?

So, my experience certainly wasn't ruined by seeing the movie first, or watching the movie again later. ^_^

Margaret | 4476 comments Mod
I had a similar experience to Lacey. Grew up with the movie, read the book in my late teens early twenties. I don't think watching the movie affected my reading at all; however, if you're the kind of person that always reads the book before watching the movie, then you should probably skip the movie for now.

Wolf Ostheeren (hazelwolf) | 70 comments Same here. I didn't even know there was a book for many years. In this case (completely at odds with my usually firm rule to read the book first) I might even consider it better to watch the film first. As beautiful as it is, it might lose more than the book when there are no surprises and no suspense at all. -- Is there anyone here who read the book first and could give their opinion?

Michele | 520 comments I read the book first and loved it, and then I also loved the movie when I finally saw it years later. The book is a little darker (the creatures in Mommy Fortuna's circus are a lot more disturbing, for example), and as with all adaptations, they had to simplify some things. But overall it's excellent, and visually lush and with a really beautiful soundtrack. I'd still read the book first, just because, but I think you'd be fine either way.
