In the Company of Vampires is #8 in a series but it can be easily read as a standalone, since it's a PNR series in the same universe but without story carrying on from book to book.
If you want to "meet them" before the book - not necessary for the story, but fun and it give us the insight of some characters - they first appear on the YA book omnibus
- when Fran is 15 and meets vampire Ben.

Okay, okay...my N isn't a book but a whole series, but I mean, come on. Nancy Drew. How was I supposed to narrow that down? I still read them as an adult when I am feeling nostalgic.
(Note: Take Fingerprints of the Gods as seriously as you want, but I thought some of the connections were fascinating. I am not sure if I believe all of them but it is some cool stuff to read if you are into the ancient history and aren't too angered by the unorthodox).
